Back to the '40s With 'De-Lovely' Looks
Ashley Judd and Kevin Kline are bringing classic glamour back to Hollywood with their new movie "De-Lovely," about the legendary songwriter Cole Porter and his socialite wife. And nowhere is the glamour more in evidence than in the film's sumptuous clothes by costume designer Janty Yates.
"Her name came to signify a certain
look," Judd explained to us about her character in
the movie. "'Very Linda Porter-ish' was a phrase
of the day. She apparently wore very simple clothing,
very simple lines."
From pearls to furs, satin and lace, fashion expert Merle
Ginsberg predicts designers will be taking their cue from
"De-Lovely," which also features jewels by Chanel,
for this fall's upcoming collections.
"This is one of the most beautifully costumed movies
in years; if it doesn't win the Oscar I will be greatly
surprised," Ginsberg told us. "You can be sure
that Armani's next collection is going to be heavily,
heavily influenced by this movie."
And Ginsberg told us that plenty of stars, like Julianne
Moore and Renée Zellweger, have already been influenced
by this 40's-retro look. "Nicole Kidman, that dress
she wore to the Oscars had a lot of shape. That, to me,
looked a little like a more structured piece you would
see in 'De-Lovely.'"
In addition to her contribution to fashion, Judd is also the new face of American Beauty, the latest fragrance and skin care line from Estée Lauder, which launches this fall.
