Playboy TV Special

Who wants to be a Playboy playmate? May 10th on Fox, a dozen women will actually compete against each other for the chance to pose for the nation's number one men's magazine.

It's a two hour reality special called "The Girl Next Door: The Search For A Playboy Centerfold." But not everybody is looking forward to Playboy's strip search.

Sandy Rios is president of Concerned Women for America, one of seven groups that has written to Rupert Murdoch, owner of the Fox network. She says, “It has been the champion of some of the worst smut on television and we would like to see Rupert Murdoch do something about that.”

Specifically, Rios, and the 500,000 women she speaks for, want Fox to reconsider running the Playboy special. They claim it reduces women to sex objects. She says, “Women are competing here to pose naked for everybody. Like this big competition so they can be the best one to take their clothes off and be lusted over by a number of men. That's a win?”

Playboy honcho Hugh Hefner argues that posing in Playboy is a passport to other opportunities in modeling and show business. Look what it did for Pam Anderson’s career. He says, “This show is empowering. This is an opportunity for women.”

But Sandy Rios warns young women everywhere not to be wooed by Playboy's promises. She says, “There is more to life than what Hugh Hefner has presented. There is a higher and nobler way to live.”
