Alec Baldwin is getting laughs on "30 Rock," but now he wants you to take him seriously -- by voting for him! The 50-year-old star tells "60 Minutes" that he's thinking of running for office.

"There's other things I want to do," he explains, adding, "It's something I might do one day."

Alec said he considered running more than a decade ago, but wanted to wait until he was older.

Alec Baldwin a No Show at Child Custody Hearing

Alec Baldwin was a no show in court Friday to what was supposed to be the first hearing since his nasty telephone tirade against his daughter, Ireland, became public.

Even though parental rights supporters stood outside and held up signs supporting Baldwin, the screen-stealing actor remained in New York.

Instead, ex-wife Kim Basinger snuck into the Los Angeles courthouse to hear the judge rule on reinstating Baldwin’s visitation rights.

His rights have been suspended since the tape – in which he called his 11-year-old a “thoughtless little pig” – was leaked and became a media sensation.

Baldwin: 'If I Never Acted Again, I Couldn't Care Less'

Golden Globe winning star of "30 Rock," Alec Baldwin, confirmed the news that he wants to quit his hit NBC sitcom.

Friday on his website, Alec wrote, “Lately, I am feeling that a commitment to parents’ rights and those of fathers in particular makes show business seem inappropriate.”

Baldwin's explosive confession came during his emotional first interview about his now infamous tirade against his daughter.

Baldwin broke down while talking to Rosie O’Donnell and Barbara Walters on “The View” Friday morning, revealing his pain upon getting a call from his 78-year-old mother after the story broke.

Kim Basinger: ‘I Didn’t Release the Voicemail!’

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for Kim Basinger issued a statement that makes it clear she is not responsible for leaking her ex-husband Alec Baldwin’s voicemail temper tantrum to the media.

“Kim Basinger did not release the voicemail. Additionally, the voicemail was not sealed under a court order,” the statement read.

In addition, Kim addressed reports she’d hired a bodyguard for her 11-year-old daughter, Ireland:

“Kim did hire security in response to the media attention on her daughter in order to allow Ireland to maintain her regular routine and activities uninterrupted.

“Everybody is always asking why this custody battle has been going on for so many years and now they have the answer. The issue is not about Kim or the alleged alienation that Alec constantly refers to, it is about his ongoing aggressive behavior. Kim’s sincerest wish is for him to finally address his unstable and irrational behavior so he, at some point, can potentially create a relationship with his daughter. Until then, Kim will continue to protect and safeguard her child’s well-being as any parent would.”

Alec Baldwin: Is Daddy Dearest Being Kept from his Daughter?

“Extra” got the all-new shots of Kim and 11-year-old daughter Ireland out in Los Angeles this weekend just hours after Alec Baldwin’s telephone rant blasted from coast to coast.

New reports on Monday claimed that Basinger hired a burly bodyguard as round the clock protection for her and Ireland.

We were first to break the news that Alec personally apologized to his daughter for his temper tantrum, and today, the star is getting all-new calls for compassion from fellow Hollywood heavyweights, including Rosie O’Donnell.

“I have to admit; I have cursed at my kids sometimes,” Rosie admitted on Monday morning’s “The View.” “Every parent here I think can admit to saying things to their kids they wish they could take back.”

Alec Baldwin to Daughter: ‘I’m Tired of Playing this Game With You’

“Extra” spotted Alec Baldwin just hours after his explosive telephone tantrum to his 11-year-old daughter Ireland was heard from coast to coast.

“I am going to get on a plane, and I’m going to come out there for the day, and I am going to straighten you’re a** out,” he threatened his only daughter with ex-wife Kim Basinger.

However, when Alec appeared on Letterman the same day he left the voicemail, he gushed about Ireland.

When Letterman asked how she was doing, he replied, “She’s great.”

On Friday, Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ.com, which broke the story, told “Extra” what may have led to this father’s fury.

“He called, she didn’t answer. He called again the next day, she didn’t answer. The third day, the tape that we have, is the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Levin dished.

And this just in to “Extra”: we’ve learned that Alec filed a motion in L.A. on Friday for a hearing to find out how the tape got out!
