AJ Calloway
Correspondent
A New Jersey native, AJ Calloway joined "Extra" as its New York City based correspondent three years ago. As "Extra" begins its milestone 15th season, Calloway will remain at the center of all things entertainment in Gotham city, interviewing the most talked about personalities in the country.
Calloway always knew he was destined to be in entertainment in some capacity. As early as high school, he was producing and promoting events as fundraisers for different organizations he was involved in. By the time he enrolled in Howard University, he formed his first promotion company which was behind some of the best independent events for his University's legendary homecomings. Calloway continued his marketing and promotions career after college and moved his vision to New York City.
It was in New York that Calloway began his television career. In August 2000, Calloway secured a position on B.E.T and in September 2000, "106 & Park B.E.T's Top Ten Live" aired for the first time - a mix of celebrity guests, live performances and the hottest videos selected by viewers. It was B.E.T's most popular show to date and earned the network outstanding ratings. In fact, the show became the number one rated video show in America knocking "TRL" out of that position which was due in part to Calloway's interviewing technique, charisma, style, signature smile and his down-to-earth personality.
After working at B.E.T for five years, Calloway knew it was time for a change so on July 28, 2005, Calloway had his last signature sign off to the "106 & Park" audience -"Love Live Life."
Calloway had a cameo in "Drumline" as well as creating, producing and starring in his own pilot for UPN, "The Show With AJ Calloway." The pilot gave him the chance to act alongside Justine Bateman, Kim Coles and Kel Mitchell. Calloway loves and respects acting and is committed to pursuing it further in the future.
Calloway believes in giving back to the community and he also speaks to youth about the negative effects of drugs, alcohol, unprotected sex and the importance of entrepreneurship and leadership. He has been a guest lecturer at University of Missouri, West Virginia State, University of Florida, University of Delaware, University of Missouri, Nassau Community College, Smith College among others. At Howard University, Calloway also taught a graduate course on Hip Hop culture and its relation to public history, the university's first course of its kind.
In addition, Calloway has clearly established himself as a true entrepreneur. He owns and operates Calloway Entertainment Group, a production, marketing, promotion and event-planning company. He is also the owner of La Otra, a Cuban-themed restaurant in New York City.
In his spare time, Calloway is a laid back guy who enjoys traveling and relaxing on the beach.
