Country Singer Chely Wright Says She's Gay

It's a country song in the making, maybe. Artist Chely Wright has come out of the closet, y'all, making her the first openly gay country music performer.

Chely Wright

"There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality," she tells People.com. "I wasn't going to be the first." But then she changed her mind. "Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out," she says.

This ends the lengthy Internet speculation as to who the People cover story about coming out would be.

The 39-year-old musician was named Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist in 1999, for her hit single "Single White Female."

The singer will release her new album, "Lifted off the Ground" and her memoir, "Like Me" on May 4.

Chely Wright is a beautiful lady, I thought this all tabloid b.s. until I heard her say it from her own
mouth. I gave been a fan of hers for years. I think her looks went a long way in getting her to where she is today. IF you look at many of her videos you will see she is dressed to kill, and she has never been shy about her great body. she has been a huge supporter of the miltary going into combat areas to ebtertain our troops. I will remain a fan, but ,I hope I am wrong, but I think her carreer will suffer. Again I hope I am wrong. I also do not understand why celegerities feel the urge to tell the world their sexual yreference. I am straigt, and I am just another working man, but I do not ever feel the urge to tell people I am straight. But if her doing that stopped her from dropping the hammer on tha 9 mm she had in her mouth, then thank God she did it. Cheky Wright is and always has been a hard worjer, shew worked her way to where she is now, and she is a patriotic American, and gay or straight she is still a talented and very beautiful woman. I know she will always have me as a fan. I think she will get some negative feedback, bvut she is strong enough to handle anything that is thrown at her. I hope people just let her be happy. She has not harmed anyone and she has done nothing wrong. God Blss You Chely. You have many people spporting you and wishing you the best.

K.D. Lang was definitely a country singer when she first emerged. In many circles is still considered country and western.

How sad! She can cure this with psychiatric help; homosexualality is something that can be treated. People accept this as an “alternative” lifestyle. This is pure ignorance. This is like saying men who like little boys is an “alternative” lifestyle too.

Um, Mandy? You are incorrect. Absolute Torch and Twang was a pretty big country album for kd! I think that was the first time I had ever heard her was on country radio. Maybe you are just too young to remember Trail of Broken Hearts…HUGE. She was not embraced by the community because she was gay and they gave her grief about being a vegitarian as well! They had implied that how dare she be an open vegitarian in an industry where cattle farming puts food on peoples tables.

KD Land is NOT country music. I don’t know what she is considered but she was never played on Country music stations or acknowledged by CMA’s.

I don’t care if she’s gay or whatever, but those eyelashes scare me. They look like spider legs.
