Shakira Slams Arizona's New Immigration Law

Humanitarian and philanthropist singer Shakira took a stand in Phoenix on Thursday, addressing the sweeping new Arizona state crackdown on illegal immigration.

Shakira

The Grammy-winner, who is from Colombia, says her main concern is how this will affect racial issues with the Latino community. "I heard about it on the news and I thought, 'Wow,'" Shakira told AP. "It is unjust and it's inhuman, and it violates the civil and human rights of the Latino community... It goes against all human dignity, against the principles of most Americans I know."

The law allows police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they're illegal immigrants. It has been criticized by President Obama and at least three Arizona cities are looking at filing lawsuits to block the law, and others to repeal it.

"I'm not an expert on the Constitution but I know the Constitution exists for a reason," Shakira told reporters. "It exists to protect human beings, to protect the rights of people living in a nation with or without documents. We're talking about human beings here."

Shakira recently debuted her new single, "Gyspy," on "American Idol."

The USA is the greatest nation in the world. We (LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZENS) all, with the exception of the Native Americans that were here when this great nation was established, have come from another country. I have no problem with immigration. Come here; bring your family, friends, relatives, and anyone else that would like to come. I am all for it. Here is the catch; DO IT LEGALLY! If you are here in the country legally this law should not offend you, your family, friends, relatives, or anyone else. The only people or let’s use Shakira’s words “human beings” that should or need to be worried are people who have no respect for this country in the first place. There are people reading this right now both legal and illegal who are saying, “This guy is full of crap, I have nothing but respect for this country”. However, if this was true and these “human beings” actually did respect this country then they would not have broken the law on their first day here. The United States has enough criminals already we do not need any more. Therefore, if you would like to come here to give yourself, your children, and even the rest of your family a better life, I say come on. That’s what this great nation is all about. However, if you cannot abide by the laws here then stay home.

I am from Costa Rica, all latinos in USA is not from Mexico, Latin America has too many countries. Latin people give to USA too many things and we love this country, in my country Costa Rica too many americans go there to live and we permit them to be like costarican people….Why the AMERICAN people can not understand ”latin people just want to work and give a better live to their family” it is easy to understand…here we need a papers to stay in USA, but we wont need them to be with GOD.

Seems Shakira is not a constitutional scholar…hate to break this to her but the constitution only protects US citizens, not those who are here illegally. Also, she clearly has only heard the propoganda about the law…if she read the law, she’d see that what Arizona has done is simply extend what already exists under federal law. Under federal law, any person who is legally in our country MUST carry visas, passports or any other document that demonstrates that they’re legally here and MUST produce these documents if requested by ANY local, state or federal law enforcement official. The AZ law merely requires that their local and state officials MUST ask for these documents when they have a reasonable suspicion that someone is an illegal…Now, reasonable suspicion may mean, for example, that a police officer sees someone jumping over the border fence into the US, but reasonable suspicion would probably not stand if a cop asks someone who looks hispanic or has an accent for their papers…AZ carefully crafted this statute to prevent the law from superceding federal law, which would’ve been unlawful on its face…

It certainly seems that the people who cry for the protection of the constitution are the same group who are attempting to bring this country to its knees. AMERICA FOR AMERICANS….PERIOD!! This country’s politicians need to think about taking care of the people who support the system. Wake up Washington….weather or not you know it or just don’t want to accept it, YOU WORK AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA….. NOT EVERY ILLIGAL LOOKING FOR A FREE RIDE.

@ Marc C. Daniele

That’s funny, I thought our country was founded by lawbreakers and illegal immigrants…

Were the native people passing out work visas to the pilgrims? I must have missed that section in history class. And I doubt anyone commenting on this forum could pass a citizenship test or provide papers if asked.

“Give me your weak, your tired, your poor…but only if you’ve got the proper paperwork” lol

I love this debate. It’s ridiculous on both sides.

Are the cops going to ask blacks and whites for IDs or just the brown people? Whites can be illegal too (europe) and blacks (africa). Most of the people that commented here only talk about mexicans but don’t forget europeans, asian and africans can be illegal too. It just looks like the problems is not been illegal but is been brown. Yes I’m an american citizen I’m also in the army 2 tours in Iraq.

Jan,
Another thing, it is not our problem what these “ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS” have gone through in their own countries! It is however our business that they are here ILLEGALLY! If they want a better life, and to get away from some so-called injustices in their own country, then we have a Proper Process for immigrating to the US, and they need to use it or be deported, period!
As a Disabled American Veteran I am sick and tired of “ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS” illegally taking jobs from American Veterans while they are homeless on America’s Streets!
I am sick and tired of “ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS” receiving benefits that are reserved only for Legal US Citizens, not to mention them receiving medical care that is better than our own veterans medical care, and not even paying for it! And US Citizens wonder why medical care costs so much in the US!

All those Latinos who voted Republican, now you can wake up and see they don’t care about you. Latinos can be very racist toward other races of people: not letting their kids marry darker people etc. Now you can see for sure, teh white man does not need you so wake up and start voting the right way. I’m from India and dated a Latino guy and his family hated me because I was darker. Ridiculous.

Lesjones: Yes a suspected rapist SHOULD be questioned. But how do you determine who looks like a suspected rapists??? Without description from a victim, you can’t just go up to any man and ask him did he rape a woman! Same with this. Unless you have some proof that the person might be illegal, how are you going to go up to random people and ask for their legal papers??? The Police should be focusing on getting child molestors off the streets NOT doing this extra dumb work. It’s insane. The cops have enough to do. And the fact is, white guys are not going to be stopped. Yet there are MANY illegal Russian immigrants etc in the US. This law is as insane as it is illogical. I respect tighter borders but this is not the way to go about it. Why aren’t they tightening the borders? I’ll tell you why: cause the drugs have to comeinto the country so everyone benefits. Wake up people.

Hey Jan,
Are you supposed to be from the US? Cause your English is horrible!
This brings up another problem with most of the “ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS”, US Citizens should learn Spanish for them to exist in OUR English speaking country! NOT! ENGLISH is the language we speak here!

They just want what you want a better life for you and your children! Its not easy to get a green card or a visa its not easy at ALL!!! I just think need to put yourself in there shoes!!! So, a Colombian citizen can just walk into Mexico & get a job & live there just because they want to?Open a taco stand (out of a grocery cart) on the beach? No drivers license,no taxes to pay no questions asked? And if they harass you, they’ll be protests by Mexicans saying, “all they want is to work

It figures, a NON US Citizen that admits has no idea about our Constitution, our Immigration Laws, or what the MAJORITY of Legal American Citizens want, but is trying to use her so-called celebrity to circumvent our US Laws!
She is definitely not talented enough to be held in higher esteem than our country, and it’s laws! It would be very easy to boycott her “music” in the US!

Shikira,

Arizona is not violating these “Illegal Immigrants” civil rights because they are not citizens of this country therefore they have no legal rights in this country! If they want civil rights in this country then do it the legal way, but only after they have already been deported for already being here illegally, then they can start the “Proper” US Immigration Process if they still wish to!
These people are here “Illegally”, if you know how to use a dictionary look that word up because this country is founded by law, not your celebrity! When you legally become a “US Citizen” then you will have the right to protest, and try to change our US Laws, but not until then!
If you want to use your over-inflated idea of your own celebrity for a “GOOD CAUSE” than protest your own countries exporting of the illegal drugs that kill humans worldwide everyday, not to mention the real civil right violations happening there!

For some reason, I feel like all the people that are really complaining are the white people in this country. Like someone commented up there, “The only true Americans are the native Americans.” They were treated so unjustly.

I’m so sick of these racist bigots. You all should follow your own words and go back to Europe, but oh, no, you don’t even know where you hail from. Your heritage is so scattered that you have no cultural identity. That is coming from someone that does have native heritage. We are the “true Americans,” so f*ck off!
