You guys go on about rescuing dogs. You do realize that they aren’t free and a rescue can be just as expensive as a dog from a breeder.

It’s great to rescue, but keep in mind, that you need to find out why a dog is in rescue and not assume that all rescue dogs have been properly rehabilitated. You also do not know the health issues that accompany a rescue, so be prepared that when you are doing the right thing, it may not be cheap and you may end up sorely dissapointed.

What a shame that Mario Lopez chose to buy a dog when 5 million companion animals are murdered in our shelters every year. One shelter alone in L.A. kills 50 a day. He could have saved thousands of pets by adopting/rescuing. He is a loser in my book. Mario do you know what a puppy mill is?

Hey Gem,
Lots of good information in your post, however, 4 months is far, far too early to spay or neuter a puppy. They are still very early in their development cycle. They should be spayed around a year of age. The vets will tell you that they are succeptible to cancers—and that’s true if they are left intact all of their lives. Cancers in the sexual organs rarely appears in young dogs. There has been documentation that certain cancers are tied to dogs being spayed or neutered too young.

Also, I’ve had Frenchies for 15 years. There’s no noticable difference in temperament between a fixed or intact Frenchie.

That said, unless you are planning to show your dog in confirmation, spay or neuter when you buddy reaches 12 months old.

Victoria i agree to an extent. You cant push your beliefs on to others, only educate. That was his choice and everyone needs to respect that, as people need to respect your beliefs. If you want to make a differance and help animals (as i do) instead of attacking people, make a statement! DONT ATTACK!! (no pun intendend)

FYI - holding your dog like a baby (on his back) is not an enjoyable thing for him - but rather, more of a threat/ punishment in his mind. You are forcing him into a submissive position (which is the same position another ‘dominant’ dog would do if attacking him. If he rolls over on his back (on his own) FOR you, he is being submissive (also a sign of fearful submission) - and will divert his eyes. If he gets into the practice of having his belly rubbed, it can also be a sign of dominance (if looking right at you wil on his back) - as if he is demanding you to rub his belly (in which case, you are the submissive on = bad news).

Might be good to learn about canine behavior/ (body) language/ communication. A few great ones on Amazon - w/ pics too.

MARIO IS NO ‘PET STAR’ IN MY BOOK..SAME ON MARIO BUYING A PUP RATHER THAN RESCUING ONE FROM A KILL SHELTER….THEN TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, THE PUP WEARS A TEE SAYING, ‘I’D RATHER BE BREEDING’, PERPETUATNG THE MYTH THAT IT’S BETTER TO BUY A DESIGNER PUP, AS HIS NARCISSTIC, MENTIONED MENTOR, OPRAH DOES …..BOTH HE AND OPRAH MISSED A GOLDEN OPP TO SAVE THOSANDS OF LIVES OF INNOCENT, LOVING DOGS….

Good job Mario. Your baby is a beauty! I was pulling for the PWD, because I’ve had 3 - but your new little bundle of joy reminds me of my English Bulldog, that I lost two weeks ago. I lost my best friend and baby at 9 and a half. She gave me so much love and enjoyment over the years - everyone says get another one, but I can’t. My Brownie was like one of my kids ( and I have 5). Every day of my life I will miss her, because she loved her mama more than anyone has ever loved me. I truly hope that “All Dogs go to Heaven!”, and give them all the love you can while they’re here! XOXOEXTRA!

Congrats on your new pup!

While Julio … is nothing short of adorable, as a first timer I certainly hope that you take the time to educate yourself on how to raise a puppy (Cesar Millan’s books/ dvd’s may be best for you) - so that you don’t end up with a misbehaved/ untrained terror.

I have been raising/ shaping/ training dogs for all of my life - including Service Dogs (for disability). What you do right now is absolutely critical. Please do yourself (& the dog) a huge favor & start enforcing the rules and provide immediate basic training as soon as you can - the earlier the better. What you may think is cute/ funny now, will only turn into a major behavior (& possibly psychological) problem in the future as an adult dog (that you will feel like dropping off at the pound) - trust me. NO tug of war - ever, unless YOU win every single time. Toys only given when earned (i.e. sit, down, come, etc.( & you decide WHEN to play/ stop. Humans ALWAYS eat first, walk thru doors & everything else first. Chewing is NOT allowed, unless it is a toy/ Nylabone given to him. Julio should also learn to sit & wait for ok command before eating, going outside/ thru door, allowed on furniture, etc. + he needs to learn that every activity/ reward needs to be earned first - esp. as a puppy. NEVER let a dog walk ahead of you when on a leash (biggest no no)- either on your left side or slightly behind. You do not want to end up w/ an uncontrolable, dominant, spoiled, nipping/ biting/ aggressive adult dog - ever. Your possessions are always off limits - from the start.

Just trying to help both you & Julio to be a healthy, mentally stable/ happy dog. Dogs need/ thrive on routine & need structure that they can depend on. They also need to see themselves as the follower w/ you as the leader they look to. ALWAYS use positive reinforcement w/ training - encourage the good. All of my dogs are trained in basics by the age of 4 mos (sit, stay, come, down, heel & go the bathroom on command) advanced tasks/ commands by 8 mos to 1 yr- and it will stick with them for a lifetime if taught well (and besides, chicks dig guys w/ dogs that are well behaved & know every trick under the sun … b/c it’s just so damned cute ;)

Any time you see a dog in a shelter, it’s usually b/c of unmanageable behavior that the owner can’t deal with. The truth of that matter every time is b/c the owner couldn’t be bothered to socialize their dog properly/ at all (puppies need to experience/ see everything when young to not be afraid/ aggressive towards it later) and/or owners could not be bothered to take the time to train, exercise & discipline the dog when it was younger & thru=out its life - period.

Also always make sure to neuter - not only is it responsible for a pet owner, but will make him a much happier/ well behaved dog (that doesn’t go humping/ dominating everything he sees). Any time between 4-6 mos is the best time - & recovery is a lot quicker too.

Sorry for the mini-novel - just like to see every puppy or dog have the life the deserves. If I can help educate at least one owner at a time, as to what a dog really needs - it is one more happy & mentally stable dog that won’t end up unwanted b/c the owner couldn’t spare the time/ be responsible for that little life.
