Adam Lambert: 'Idol' Will Survive Sans Simon

"American Idol" launched Adam Lambert into stardom -- and the pop star believes the show will be a continued success despite the departure of Simon Cowell.

"Ultimately, after the first couple weeks of auditions, the audience tunes in every week for the contestants," Lambert reveals on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," airing Tuesday, as reported by People magazine.

He adds that the show's success is all about the viewers. "[Audiences] grow fond of one or a couple of the people and they get behind them, and they're invested in them. And of course, it's great to hear... what Simon's going to say. But we tune in to hear the contestants blossom or not."

The show will go on -- but Lambert admits that future hopefuls will miss out on the chance to grow from Simon's honest critiques.

"The contestants will miss out on, like, really honest criticism. Sometimes it can be a little personal, and I know other contestants took it to heart sometimes and got really stressed out about what he would say," Lambert explains. "[But] I think that that's important to making you a better performer... You've got to hear the good and the bad."

Adam is very articulate, positive and diplomatic, but I think Idol will survive despite the departure of both Paula and Simon. Although the judges are all important, none of them are irreplaceable. I watch for the entertainment, and all of us who watch have our favorites. We do get behind them and cheer for them just like we did for Adam! This show gives that big break to those who wouldn’t get one otherwise most likely. There’s a success story every year. I love that!

Adam always says the right thing in such a positive way. I am thankful Adam had Idol to help boost his career, he is the best they ever had, and I don’t think the show is going to survive without Paula and esp. Simon, I can’t even watch it anymore since last years fiasco in voting. Bye bye Idol

I agree with Barnsinger, Adma is being diplomatic, which is exactly what he should be.

But yeah, AI without Simon AND Paula?? No way. It’s a goner.

Adam is just being diplomatic. He knows as well as everyone else that there is NO WAY Idol will survive without Simon. I keep hoping every day that Simon will reconsider. He’s walking away from a phenomenon and taking a gamble with a show that may not become a part of the American pop culture fabric that Idol is. Dance with the one that brung ya, Simon!!! Stay on Idol!!!
