Tyler Perry Recounts Abusive Past

Director/actor/producer Tyler Perry has written an emotional letter on his website about his extremely abusive childhood.

The successful filmmaker said the film "Precious" took him back to his horrific childhood. "It took me through some raw emotions and brought me to some things and places in my life that I needed to deal with but had long forgotten," Perry wrote. He executive produced the powerful film with Oprah Winfrey.

In the letter, Perry revealed, "As I child I always thought I would die before I grew up." Perry recounted the stories about how his father beat him until his was 19.

"My father came home, mad at the world," he said. "He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back."

Perry was "always sick" as a child and had asthma. He would have to go to the doctor weekly to get shots to control his allergies but his grandmother believed it was a waste of money and he just had "germs." Perry's grandmother decided to "kill the germs" by bathing Tyler in ammonia.

Perry also suffered sexual abuse. He was seduced by a friend's mother at age 10 and molested by another friend's father.

The 40-year-old says learning to forgive is the lesson. Perry wrote, "I choose to forgive with all my might. Forgiveness has been my weapon of choice. It has helped to free me."

Tyler,
All I can say is Praise God! Praise God you survived. Praise God you forgive. Praise God you have arrived. And Praise God you are able to touch so many lives with your talent. It all makes sense in a very sad way. The only thing that saves my heart from breaking for you is knowing that you truly haven’t shared this for sympathy, but because you know it will help someone somewhere down the line. You are such an unselfish and such a giving man. No wonder God has blessed you the way He has. And no wonder you continue to bless your fans!

I’m so proud to be one of those fans!

Tyler what I have found in my own life is that God always answers our prayers, but never said, it would be an easy road getting there. What happened to you is something that I would not wish on my worst enemy but you made it. What you went through made you who you are as a person and I’m not talking about money. You would not be who you are now if you had not gone though what you did then and it made you a stronger, better person for it. I know this brought you closer to God and appreciate everything you have acommplished in life mean just that more meaningful to you. God have answered your preyers but I’m sorry you had to endure such long suffering to get their. I will prey for you and please do the same for me. You have did something that no one else I know have ever done on their own, which is forgive those who have hurt you and that is half the battle. I am 48 but my mind feels like it is way beyond my years. If you ever need a friend, a true friend that wants nothing from you I will always be their for you even though you do not know me. I know I was placed here on earth by God to help in anyway I can.I am a retired police officer and I know how your hidden demons can do to you. If you ever wish to talk just e-mail me and I will answer any and all questions you may have. Remeber this you are not alone.
