Sandra Bullock: I Was Too Selfish to Have Kids

Sandra Bullock talks about marriage and children to Parade

Sandra Bullock became a stepmom when she married Jesse James -- and the actress says 5-year-old Sunny has shown her what "real life" is about.

"I seemed to have stepped in right when I needed to be there," Bullock tells Parade magazine. "If you don't have kids and animals, you don't truly know what real life is about."

Bullock and James married in 2005 when she was 39. "I was good at bolting before," the actress admits. "I didn't want to do the work. And I was too selfish to have kids. Now I work at what I love."

"The Proposal" star also reveals marriage wasn't at the top of her to-do-list. "I didn't grow up thinking, 'I'm gonna get married and have someone take care of me,'" Bullock says. "I always wanted to be happy, have a good time, work hard."

First, I agree with Elise that Sandra has a choice in her life as to whether she has children of her own, or not. Selfish is to never do anything good for anyone, but yourself. She’s given more than enough, as do a handful of actors, musicians, and what have you by simply providing the world, or most of it anyway, with her brilliant performance for her audience. Also, I’m quite certain that Sandra’s social responsibility has been fulfilled in many ways, including the donating of some of her earnings where she feels it’s needed. I love you Sandy for giving me the laughter when needed.

Sandra…

Dogmatic, much?

Not having kids isn’t a selfish thing. It’s a life choice. More more, no less.

You can make the world a better place in lots of ways…parenting is just one of them. I’m a devoted auntie, teach music to middle and high school kids for short money, and I’ve been a Big Sister. But I guess, according to your rules, I’m just a selfish hag.

If you want to be less selfish, why not give 40 or 50% of your gargantuan income away to help the truly needy children and animals around the world, instead of saying that every last one of us ought to produce more kids of our own or we’re “selfish”?

The navel-gazing of the Hollywood set never ceases to make my jaw drop.
