'Mermaid Girl' Shiloh Pepin Dies

Shiloh Pepin, a girl born with a rare condition often called Mermaid Syndrome, has died. Pepin appeared on Oprah and on TLC. She was 10 years old.

The AP reports Maine Medical Center spokesman John Lamb said Shiloh died at the hospital Friday afternoon.  She had been hospitalized in critical condition since last week.

Shiloh was born with sirenomelia, a condition where her legs were fused from the waist down. The condition is about as rare as conjoined twins and is usually fatal within a day or two of birth.

Last month, Shiloh sat down with Oprah and said she didn't mind being called "mermaid girl" and she had no interest in getting her legs separated.

Shiloh will forever be remembered as the mermaid girl, but first and for most she was a daughter, Her parents did a great job of teaching her how to be her own person. She will be missed and she will continue to inspirer others. R.I.P Thoughts and prays with her family and friends.

It was so sad she is gone. Atleast she touched as many lives as she could while she was here. God bless her mom and dad.

I just couldn’t believe what I heard on tlc that Shiloh was gone. i am so truly sorry for your loss, many of us mourn with you, she was a blessed angel. The most precious gift that you could have. I watch her, and am so amazed at her talents. My little granddaughter who is five watches the program all the time. She will be missed, love to all and to our little butterfly.

Shiloh
You were such a God send to us as we watched your documentaries and showed us all how to enjoy life; even though I have never met you I am still crying for you and for your family and for me; because it just shows that life is so delicate and so fleeting that you have to make the best of it…RIP darling…..Rockel

My prayers for the family. It has been a great loss. This little girl has taught us that life keeps going no matter how bad it seems from the outside. She is now with God and I pray for her that she is as happy as she was on this earth.

What a brave little girl. She will be greatly missed by all those lives her story touched. I found this information from an article based out of her home town.

This little girl was not only an inspiration to those who knew her, but people like me who know her story. Shilo was the bravest person I have ever heard of and is a true role model.
Bless her.

She was truly an inspiration to all and will still be. She will be greatly missed. Does anyone know if there is a way to donate either to the family or to a foundation that she was close to?

Shiloh Pepin was the true and closet to a real little Mermaid we will ever know! She had a huge heart and smile, I feel so sad to hear the news, I hoped to see her grow and full-fill her life, my prayers to all her famaly and my thanks to them for letting most us in to there world she will be in my heart for ever, may she rest in peace now and may her parents be strong just like Shiloh… I will miss you for ever Little Princes.
