Mario,
I volunteer on the weekends at a local shelter & we have over 100 dogs there. Some live in the shadows for years, being overlooked because people want a puppy or pure bred dog. Some of our dogs have been at the shelter for 5-6 years. Hoping you might consider adopting an older dog. If not, it’s ok - you are still doing a wonderful thing by adopting.

Mario,
Go to Pembroke or Cardigan Corgi Rescue on line, or on line Pet Finder.com and rescue a corgi. They are excellant watch dogs for their size. They are loving, loyal, and adorable. I have two and am crazy about this breed. Ask the Queen of England, she’ll verify the above. Also the German Shepard makes a great loyal pet.
Good luck with what ever breed you choose. I have never been with out a dog in my life. They are your true loyal friends, forever and always there for you.
God bless,
Brenda

You first need to know how much time you will spend with this dog. A large dog needs exercise and companionship.
Keep going to shelters until you see the dog that “makes you smile” you will know it. Be sure to play with it. When I found one of my babies, she just looked at me and I knew. I have 2 pugs, both needed homes at different times, and my shelter dash-chu, is my watch dog. She looked scared but sweet and she is sweet and protective. I saved her now she watches out for me.
Don’t go by the AKC they are the reason so many dogs need homes.

Mario,

Last year our son and a friend picked up a Miniature Pinscher from a shelter here in Northern Illinois and it’s been a joy ever since. He’s about 1 1/2 yrs old now and his coloring is black w/ brown markings. He’s smart, lovable, loves to cuddle, energetic, ‘sassy’, and gets along with our 12 yr old teacup Yorkie. He loves his walks and enjoys kids. We have had a Cocker Spaniel and two Yorkies in the past, and this Mini-Pin, named Heisman (like the trophy), is really something special. Good Luck on your search for the right dog, and if you haven’t done so already, check out the Miniature Pinscher.

I think if Mario chose a Golden Retreiver He would have a companion that would love him, protect him and always be there for him. Best of luck on whatever is your choice. Mary K.

Mario,
If this is your first dog, you should get a german shepherd. They are they smartest and most loyal dogs on the planet. Least likely to run away. Very loyal, and will be willing to keep up with your active lifestyle. I had a german shepherd for 10 years and now have a doberman pinscher. Which is also a great dog, however, the dobie will chase anything without reguard to my wishes. As long as you have a house keeper, the German Shepherd is the right dog.Go to a rescue group for this breed. They love people!!!

Mario,
I think it is wonderful that you are giving adoption some consideration. There are way too many in shelters and foster care who are waiting to be found. Fosters have some time on their side while many shelter dogs have a time line and their lives literlly depend on someone like you to find them. Your thoughtfulness brings national attention to their need to be given a chance to find happiness. As for which one will be the right one for, you will know it in your heart when you meet. Good luck!
