Dr. Oz: Beware of Candy Germs on Halloween

"Extra" Lifechanger Dr. Mehmet Oz is warning trick-or-treaters this year: swine flu could be passed around on candy. Nutritionist Tami Hulcher also has a health warning about consuming too many sweets.

Dr. Oz says to beware of candy germs on Halloween

Find out how to prevent swine flu.

It's also best to avoid white sugar, since it can hamper the immune system and make you more susceptible to disease. Also, your body doesn't know how to digest trans fat foods and you should eliminate them from your diet.

For Stella and Bev, Glad some of our tips worked and you made some healthy sacrifices! Bev, you might have been referring to my CBS morning show segment earlier in the week where I mentioned ways to buy back the candy or to offer gift cards to your kids to their favorite store or movie tickets. Other tips inc. math and art projects for teachers to give extra credit for kids by using (thus not eating) candy on poster boards. The 60-second aired EXTRA piece with Dr. Oz was originally longer and my segment alone was supposed to be about 75-90 seconds. You can only give so much nutrition advice and health tips in 15 seconds, yet we are glad we made an impact. The Queen of Health

Thanks for the tips. The families on our block were having a party anyway instead of letting the kids go door to door. We decide to get some germ wipes to clean the bags. We added fruit, raisins, and other “treats” to the mix. It is difficult to get the kids to not want sweets.

Also, someone mentioned that Tami had mentioned about buying candy back? Interesting idea, not sure how well it would work

Thanks to Dr. Oz and the Queen. We decided to just have a small party on out block with the kids. They were real happy about it, but we felt we could at least control the germ thing. As for “healthy” alternatives, we did go with fruit, but the candy still made it in, but we limited the amount. I guess we have to do this slowly to gain some acceptance from the little ones.

Hi Bob, Thanks for your kudos! When we taped the piece, I gave nutrition tips, discussed the immune system, how to read labels, and provided healthy non-food alternatives like fun pencils, erasers, and such. I also give incentives and tips for parents to ‘buy’ back the candy. I did a CBS morning show which details most of the above info. If you go to my TV/Radio link listed on the Lifechangers, to get more helpful tips. With so many positive responses, I’ve decided to post some tips later to my blog. It was great to team with Dr. Mehmet Oz for this brief piece. Happy Healthy Halloween, Tami Hulcher, The Queen of Health

WOW..I nver thought about the germs that are in the candy bowls! Thank you Dr. Oz for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I told my two daughters that we won’t be able to go trick-o-treaating this year. They were a little bumbed but they rather be healthy. I’m now having a small Halloween party for my girls with some scary movies. Thank you again!

Wow, I had not really thought about the passing of the germs, and also how much sugar was in these “treats”. Thanks Dr. Oz and Tami Hulcher. I found this quick snippet very useful. Is there any place I can find information about the amount of sugars in these “treats”? Sort of like the “Eat This Not That” series
