VOTE: Did Kate Go Too Far?

Kate Gosselin's rep is responding to the backlash about pictures of the mother of eight spanking her 5-year-old daughter Leah in public.

The reality TV star's rep speaks for her, telling Life & Style, "Whether the paparazzi are there or not, I am a mother first. I love my children and when they misbehave, I discipline them as I deem appropriate for the situation."

Clinical psychologist Dr. Gabe Crenshaw says pressure from the media could be causing Kate to lash out. He tells "Extra," "It is a possibility that Kate is, sort of, succumbing to the pressure and sort of acting out on taking it out of the children."

Couples therapist and Momlogic.com contributor Dr. Michelle Golland says, "You cannot hit them when you are angry!" Dr. Golland believes Kate is reinforcing her role, she adds, "She's the disciplinarian and Jon is the fun guy."

Sources tell "Extra" Jon didn't sleep at home last night. When he arrived this morning, he went straight up to a little apartment above the garage.

"Extra" wants to know what you think. Did Kate go too far disciplining her daughter?

Debate this in our our community.

theres nothing wrong of spanking a child that’s part of discipline and Kate have all the right to discipline her kids. She’s bitting her up.

People, there is a difference in spanking and beating. Kate was disiplining her daughter for bad behavior after she had been told to stop what she was doing. She didn’t and she faced the consequences. Think about it, if more parents would discipline their children maybe you wouldn’t have all the stories in the news of kids gone bad. Quit making excuses for the children and maybe they will acutually grow up to be productive adults.

Katie has the right to discipline her children the way she see fit. Should she do it when she is angry, probably not. As long as she doesn’t loss her temper and begin beating them then no one should worry about it. She is at her home. Leave her alone!

Give me a break! Leave her alone! I got spanked as a kid too! So what! I’m so sick of people picking on this family! They are having a rough enough time, leave them alone to figure things out!

IT’s her right to discipline her children the way she wants and spanking has been the way for centuries. What doesnt kill the children only makes um stronger.

Kate was a mother before she was a T.V. star. There is nothing wrong with her spanking the child to discipline the childs behavior. This is why our children are out of control today. We set up this cry-baby United States nation, and we wonder why teachers can’t do they jobs in school. Out of control children!

was too hard for her to take the whistle away? spanking does have it’s place but this was a whistle! i can’t bear to think of what some of the so-called “mommy experts” here have produced that we, as a society, now have to deal with. this woman has been doing this crap for a long time but the followers are are more pathetic than the gosselin “adults”.

Kate has every right to discipline her children as she sees fit. However, she must be always mindful of the trouble she has brought upon herself by subjecting herself AND her family to constant public scrutiny. She needs to think BEFORE she reacts to everything - including disciplining her children. She should have grabbed up the kid and taken her someplace private to issue the punishment. Everyone may always wonder, but the punishment and conversation needs to be between the child and the parent. Even the other siblings do not need to know what transpired. “Praise in public, discipline in private” is what I believe.

Sometimes it’s the only way to get their attention. Give me a break, a swat on the butt is hardly child abuse. Kate’s right, they’re her kids, and, she can decide how to discipline them. This is the time to teach them that there are consiquences for breaking the rules. It’s much harder when they’re teen agers. Jon is a perfect example of a kid who wasn’t swated on the bottom often enough as a child.

I absolutely agree with Kate. I grew up when paddling was punishment for bad or inappropriate behavior. We survived and it wasn’t child abuse. It made us think twice knowing what the consequences were before we did anything we shouldn’t. It’s her obligation as a mother to disipline and let her children realize that unappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. This is what is wrong with our society today…when paddling in the schools and at home was looked on as abuse the kids knew they could get away with anything and they do. Time out is a joke!!

i think you should all be ashamed of yourselfs! you mean to tell me that you have never spanked you kids! Please! I think that how someone punishes their child is there business as long as it does not go too far…. the only reason anyone is even paying attention to this is b/c she is on a show! i say leave the woman alone and stop gawking and look in the mirror! if your life is that booring that you have to live through other people then you are a looser!!!!

Enough is enough. Leave this poor woman alone. I understand that she is in the public eye, but there comes a point when we need to remember that she is a mother just trying to raise her childeren the right way. On top of that, she is having marital problems (that also should be left alone by the public). Everyone is so quick to judge, but I would love to see all those people try and do wha she does. Give her a BREAK.

OMG!! She AND her husband turn their kids into the equivalent of performing circus animals AND are willing to destroy their marriage all for fame and money and this is perfectly acceptable by the Hollywood idiots. BUT she spanks her child and she’s the devil’s spawn?? Seems to me priorities are just a tad out of proportion. Sadly it’s hard to defend her too much without being as hypocritical as the ones who are persecuting her because you can’t say “leave her alone” about someone who threw themselves in front of the spotlight just to turn around and whine that it’s too bright. I will however say that she was simply spanking her child…get over it and go follow that sweet, wholesome Paris Hilton around for awhile.

come on spanking is not wrong at all if half of all the criminals in prison would have been spanked then most of the jails wouldnt be so over populated

Leave Kate alone, an open handed swat on the butt tells a child you’re not going to accept their bad behavior. It’s quick and efficient.

The public should leave this MOM alone. Like she said, she is a MOM first and it should be left up to all parents how to discipline their children, as long as it is within reason.

Beating a child is wrong. Kate was spanking her child. If more parents would spank when the situation calls for it we wouldn’t have so many problems with children in this country. PEOPLE PLEASE GET OVER IT. SHE HAS COMMITTED NO CRIME. YES SHE SEEMS BOSSY BUT, SHE IS JUST DOING HER BEST WITH 8 CHILDREN. OBVIOUSLY SHE HAD TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE JON SEEMS LIKE A REAL WUSSY. HE NEEDS TO TAKE CHARGE AND BE A MAN.

How can you give a child a time-out in a situation such as the one shown? I have not seen very effective results from the time-out method of discipline. Perhaps if we went back to the Bible “spare the rod, spoil the child” method, we would not have young people who think the world owes them everything. A whack on the behing with a hand is not abuse. If it gets to that point, the hand delivering it will be severely injured as well.

Honestly…i can’t believe that people are making such a big deal over a little pop on the butt that Kate gave her little girl. SHe did not ball her fist up and punch the little girl in the face. I wish people would give her a freaking break and leave her alone!!! She is a great mom who is raising 8 kids to the best of her ability. I cannot wait until their lives go back to normal. I am so over hearing about them.
