I am 65, post menopausal and have developed what I think are seasonal allergies. However, everyday is a nightmare in several areas of my life. My eyes itch and burn all the time. I rarely wear makeup and usually have to by more because the old one has expired.

I have gained about 20 lbs in the last 6 months and can not attribute it to overeating or calorie/fat high foods.

I was on Weight Watcher for 3 months and actually gained 2 lbs by the end of that time.

I am beginning to hate myself and find I may have a low level of depression because of these issues.

Personal physician has not been terribly helpful. Should I see an allergist or try some things, like gluten free, on my own.

Thanks S K LAwler

For a few yrs I noticed every time I ate something with wheat in it, I’d get sick and also with milk. So I tested myself by not eating or drinking something that had either of those in it. Well guess what? I didn’t get sick or have those major, major pains. So I tried to eat something with wheat to make sure that was it and oh yeah I got sick and did it with the dairy as well. I now have lactose intolerance and celiac disease which I had to figure out myself, cuz the doctors said it wasn’t an allergy, go figure!

When I was in my early 20’s I was tested on the skin and told I had a lot of food sensitivity and should avoid the foods if they bother me. I recently went to an allergist and requested him to test me for food allergies, knowing I have several environmental allergies. He told me there was no need to test me and that he didn’t think I knew what I was talking about and the symptoms are common with a lot of people but are not allergies or sensitivities.

People in my family have food allergies that developed later in like like glutin, wheat, etc. How do I get a doctor to test me?

I have read the book on Your Hidden Food Allergies Are Making You Fat. My PCP and even my allergist tell me they have no idea of what this book is talking about with the type of test it tells you to get, ALCAT test.

In the past 6 months I started a job and so I have been eating 3 to 6 small meals as directed by my diabetic nurse/dieticitian and I have gained over 50 lbs and am almost out of clothes that fit me. I am a Type II Diabetic Hypoglicimic (a.k.s. syndrome-x, insulin resistance).

Help, I live in the southwest burbs of the Chicagoland area.
