Natasha Richardson Injured in Ski Accident

0316richardson.jpg

Unconfirmed reports say actress Natasha Richardson has been declared brain dead after suffering a serious head injury while skiing in Canada.

The 45-year-old was first brought to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien following the accident. She was then transferred to Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal.

Her husband, actor Liam Neeson, 56, left the set of a movie to be by his wife's side. A rep for the film released a statement to Canadian TV, saying, "Liam Neeson left the Toronto set immediately to fly to Montreal upon news of his wife's accident. We do not have any details at this time but we hope for the best and our thoughts and prayers are with Natasha and Liam and their family."

Richardson has two teen sons with Liam Neeson. She is the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and the late actor Tony Richardson.

The IrishCentral.com first reported Richardson's injury.

UPDATE: The Montreal Gazette reports that Richardson was walking around for an hour after the accident, says a Mont Tremblant ski resort spokesperson. She was not wearing a ski helmet on a private ski lesson on a beginners' run. She fell and tumbled down a hill. Her two sons, Michael, 13 and Daniel, 12 were skiing with her at the time. There were no external injuries. After returning to her hotel room, she experienced headaches and was transported to Centre Hospitalier Laurentien, and later to intensive care at Sacre Coeur Hospital.

Natasha's sister, "Nip/Tuck" actress Joely Richardson, is in London filming "The Day of the Triffids," a BBC/Power mini-series in which their mother also stars.

UPDATE: Reports out of Canada say that Natasha is being transported by jet to a new hospital, possibly in New York. Some reports have said the actress is brain dead, but they have not been confirmed by family or representatives.

My prayers are with Liam Neeson, their 2 sons, Vanessa Redgrave and all of her family and friends for the strength to carry them through this and for the Lord’s blessings to fall on them, supporting them, guiding them, and creating the miracle of life to be gifted to her. And please, can we ask the media to allow them to walk through this privately…we can wait for all the details when THEY are ready to share them. Do something useful; pray for them first, grant them their privacy second.

The Perez Hilton site is totally disgusting. I’m a Canadian and just went onto our most reliable source for news and as of right now her condition is unknown. The doctors did say it was a good sign that she had been walking just after the accident.
My prayers are with the family and I think the best way we can help is to not pay attention to any gossip sites.

It amazes me how commenters presume to be medical experts! The details of her injury are largely unknown and nobody can predict an individual’s recovery from a head injury. I hope for the best.

If she has had a traumatic brain injury she will have a long road back—if she can ever come back fully. I hope she gets the best of care with neuropsychologists and other head injury specialists, and that her family and friends become educated as to what to expect…

Natasha, I’m sorry this skiing accident tragedy has befallen you. Traumatic brain injuries are next to impossible to recover. The world will mourn the loss of your talent. My heart is heavy for your husband and 2 sons. We of course hope for a full recovery, but must also think realisitically. This should serve as a lesson to other on the importance of wearing a helmet when skiing!!
