Michelle Obama's Pledge to Help Military Families

In her first interview as First Lady, Michelle Obama tells "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts she wants military families to know they have a friend in the White House.

Mrs. Obama traveled to Fort Bragg, North Carolina to meet with military families and servicemen and women. She says she's distressed by the struggle of military families. "It hurts," she told Roberts of hearing about military families on food stamps. "These are people who are willing to send their loved ones off, perhaps, give their lives -- the ultimate sacrifice. But yet, they're living back at home on food stamps. It's not right, and it's not where we should be as a nation."

The First Lady also says she is able to stay positive about the economy. She remains confident in her husband. "I wouldn't want anybody but Barack Obama to be working at this time, because he is a focused, clear-thinking, rational man -- and that's what we need right now," she said. "I'm coming off of a boost of understanding all that our country is made of, the values, the men, the women, people who are looking for the silver lining, even in tough times."

Robin Roberts' interview with Mrs. Obama airs this morning on "Good Morning America" as well as on "World News with Charles Gibson" and "Nightline."

- sj (anonymous) commentor, thank you so much for clearing that up. Takes a big person to apologize. I also have many military families in my family. All of my parents brothers all went off to war along time ago, my 3 brothers all served in the military. I am sensitive about that issue and I am happy that you also support out troops. THANK YOU SO MUCH, MUCH APRECIATE IT.

THANKS SJ, FROM ALLY

ALLY - I have nothing BUT rtespect for our military families - especially the ones in those families who’ve gone to war risk their lives for all of us. Always have, always will. I don’t care about the constant hyping of mo or bo. My comments were merely, for some unknown reason, mistakenly transferred to this ‘story’, but were meant for the other ‘news flash’ of the obamas ‘gardening’. I dont know what happened, but I’ve been having trouble w/ this site lately. I’m the daughter of a veteran, so make no mistake, my respect is intact for those who’ve earned it - and they have. When there’s no camera around, when there’s no audience, when there’s no help. Always.

HOW DARE YOU COME ON HERE THINKING THIS IS A BIG JOKE AND TALKING ABOUT YOUR YARD. HELL, HIRE A GARDNER. WE DON’T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS.

HAVE RESPECT FOR OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

If Michelle doesn’t like the vets on food stamps, she might tell her husband to go thru welfare and other gov’t assist. programs with a fine-toothed comb. You get the people off welfare who’ve been mooching off taxpayers for probably most of their lives, and we won’t be needing ANY bailouts. I’d gladly give any assistance to a veteran, in whatever form needed - but to the lazy, worthless peons with their air of entitlement - GET OFF YOR BUTTS and GET A JOB. I see you every day, out walking, playing, dancing, jumping, SHOPPING - if you can do that, you can work. And I do my best to report any violations(like marrieds pretending they’re separated, but living together to get a check - ugh) - we ALL should. Give the money back to whom it belongs.Stop handing over money to those who spent it like drunken sailors (big biz), and to those with their hands out all the time (you know who you are)

This is everybody’s problem, Repulicans, democrats, liberals. We all need to band together to help these veteran’s and like NOW, STAT,PRONTO !!!!

It’s terrible money easily goes to corporations to bail them out. That’s f*cked up.

What the hey is going on in Washington dc.

If people complain or gather signatures, the vetereran are the ones who suffer.

The U.S. bailed AIG corporation and they blew 165 million on bonuses for the top personnel. That makes me very irate, that money could have gone to our veterans.

I think if we all went to TMZ, they would do something about it, or CNN crime.

What the U.S. is doing is so f*cked up, reward the CEO’S of companies and kick our soldiers in the teeth when they are down. We need to sign petitions nto help the veterans. AS OBAMA SAYS AN NOW WE CAN REPEAT WHAT HE SAYS ‘YES WE CAN’

someone needs to kick the U.S. a** to get them going and help our vets.

Tess, thank you, and God bless you, first of all. It’s always been an embarrassment how this country treats its’ veterans, who, by the way, help keep us warm and cozy at night. I loved your post, even though I’m saddened by your plight. A veteran should never have to pay for anything ever again, once he/she has served so selflessly. This is something of which the new (inexperienced)president has no concept, apparently. I just want you to know that most of us really do appreciate you, and wish a ‘bail-out’ would’ve come YOUR way - BUT, as is NOW usual, accolades, praise, and rewards go to the undeserving.

I’m a disabled veteran, just medically retired from the military in limbo. I have to pay for my medical care while waiting on the VA to do their paperwork…but unable to work because of my injury. I can’t use the VA hospital yet, I don’t get VA benefits yet and I’m waiting on a retirement paycheck. My point…Obama is now a Commander in Chief w/no military, no war time experience. He was a spoiled rich kid claiming to have been raised on hard times because he had it rough in boading school. He was voted in office because he was backed by celebrities…everyone got star struck, including him and his wife. They spend more time entertaining celebrities in the white house and on the TV and magazine curcuit than they do in running the country and being first lady. (And how much does she spend on her wardrobe?) So no, these people have no idea what it is like to be military…nor to be an injured military veteran waiting on medical care and a little retirement check with no job while waiting to be healed. They have always had money.

Don’t get me wrong, you don’t join the US military to make money, you do it for the love of our country…to keep it free. To give people in the US a voice, as one nation under God and to keep the US flag flying free.

Obama has made some bad decisions for the military so far…so why should we think he would start caring about us now. He is not listening to his military advisors. We are pulling out of the middle east way too fast..the average US citizen is not prepared to handle that kind of a mistake. Yes, I was a Bush supporter. He didn’t make the bad decisions in the last few years that put us where we are today….the democrats did, he was out numbered and out voted. Bush was a military veteran and a supporter…and at least he could salute!!

There is a rumor that Obama is having the insurance and co-pay for retirees raised and that the disabled veterans are going to have to pay for their care at the VA now so that he can fund his homeless healthcare system. If this is correct, how dare he make war veterans coming back with no legs, arms, etc. pay for their care after such a sacrafice. How dare he make retirees with injuries to their bodies, after years of service to their country, pay for the homeless healthcare. There are programs such as testing how slow ketchup comes out of bottles and other stupid programs that can be cut before you come after the military. You won’t have any recruits if you keep messing w/the military benefits and pay…we won’t be able to defend ourselves against our enemies…both foreign and domestic.

As a matter of fact, cut all those stupid programs out. Why do we need to test the slowness of ketchup? There were other dumb programs that were added to this last stimulus package that Obama signed off on….thousands and thousands of wasteful dollars that he should have vetoed, and McCain tried to get him to not sign it with the spending waste in the package. Obama wouldn’t listen to him…YES, that is our President!!!! BUT he is making changes!!!! (He didn’t promise positve changes, did he?)

Bottom line, they don’t care about the military. They don’t seem to care much about anything except entertaining in the whitehouse and being seen on TV as far as I can see.

hmmm convenient: Sad to say, that all who voted for b.o. HAVE to now defend their choice, lest they look like fools. After throwing around the absolutely nauseating amount of obsequious empty praise on some one about whom you know nothing, I guess it is embarrassing. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Certain folk needed to feel really good about themselves in their choice - it was more about the ‘feathers in their caps’ than about the actual experience and record of a presidential candidate. One HELL of a time to have an agenda - this is really going to be scary. Let’s see who else can be alienated, besides our most important citizens, AND, more recently, our most steadfast ally…

aahh, freaked out

Seems odd to me…

NOW they “care” about military families?

I seem to recall during innauguration time that of the many balls, only one didn’t have CELEBRITIES! That would be the MILITARY BALL, where our veterans are presented with merits, honors, and awards. THE ONLY BALL THE PRESIDENT DID NOT ATTEND???? As a matter of fact,.. since their inception, this was the ONLY PRESIDENT to NOT attend the Military Ball?

Seems rather obvious some “back-peddling” would be going on right now.

Again, this President of “convenience” and this President whom is all things to all people White, Black, and Muslim, is there anything President Obama isn’t other than “perfect”?

And the MEDIA (extra) and their constant sugar-coated President reporting. Nauseating really..

hmmm convenient
