TV Chimp Attacks, Victim Critical

0217chimp.jpg

Charla Nash, 55, is facing "life-changing, if not life-threatening" injuries after being mauled by a chimpanzee on Monday in Connecticut -- which was later killed by a police officer.

Chimp Travis, who has starred in commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola, inexplicably attacked Nash, a friend of his owner Sandra Herold. The chimp reportedly lunged at Nash when she exited her car after arriving to help Sandra get the 200-lb. Travis back inside the house.

Herold rushed to her friend's defense, calling 911 and stabbing Travis in an effort to get him off of Charla. Nash is currently in critical condition, and is facing "life-changing, if not life-threatening" injuries to her hands and face, Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy told the NY Post. Police captain Richard Conklin added, "It was a very brutal attack."

Travis was fatally shot by police after the animal ran toward officers, who retreated to their cars in defense. This is the first time the 15-year-old chimp -- who was toilet trained, dressed himself and ate at the table -- has attacked anyone.

"Extra" wants to know -- do you think it should be legal to have a wild animal as a pet?

To all you people who are attacking Coates…I can tell you’ve never been confronted with the dangers of a wild animal. You all think that primates are playful para-humans and you are WRONG. A comparative arguement about canines is stupid. Coates was protecting his life on his own property- he has that right, and he was not confronting some colorful, talking cartoon character. My god, people - what if that thing had gotten a hold of a child?????

Police: 2-week-old Ariz. girl dies in dog attack

(AP) — A 2-week-old Arizona girl has died after being attacked by the family’s dog in their home.
Mesa police detective Steve Berry says police were called Wednesday night by a woman who said her daughter had been bitten by a family dog.

Berry says officers found the infant in the living room with bite wounds on her head. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Berry says the mother had placed her daughter in a low-lying bassinet or crib and discovered the attack when she returned a few moments later.

The parents’ names weren’t released. However, Berry says the father is a Mesa police officer who was at work at the time. The mother is an officer for the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.

you sick american fools.
chimps are no dogs, nor cats, nor human!
they belong in the wild, and more importantly, with other chimps!!
think about it. dogs bite more people over the years than chimpansees, but do you teach your dog to dress himself, or eat at the table??
and if situation was reversed, how long would a human being function ‘rationally’ if he was to live among chimps, eat, and behave just like them, just for the liking of it??
in my opinion: you own a chimp, tiger, crocodile or whatever kind of ‘not domistic’ animal, and you don’t give the animal the chance to live their destined, normal wild life YOU DESERVE TO BE ATTACKED!
WE SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

It is a fact that when a personal attack is launched during an argument, that indicates the speaker or writer has no further logical comments to support his/her side of the argument. It is to try to discredit the opponent by the person “losing” the argument, and has absolutely no place in a reasonable discussion. As far as I’m concerned, any pet owner should be held legally, criminally, and financially responsible for any actions of their pets. If your cat craps in my flower bed, you come and clean it up; if your dog or chimp or tiger maims or kills someone, then you pay the costs and spend some time in jail. It is called “responsibility”.

Mike Casey,
I find it interesting that you won’t comment about the recent events publicly but instead you hide your face (though I can’t say I blame you, being as how you have been disfigured by Travis’ possible father, Coco another one of your chimps) and still stand behind your twisted lies about the actual events. You say I should go re-read the story? I don’t have to, I was there, you weren’t, and the events of that day, due to your wife’s irresponsible and negligent actions still haunt me daily. How do you figure this is nothing like the attacks of St. James Davis, and Charla Nash? The ONLY difference is that I was able to defend myself. So I guess in that regard these cases are more like the other time Coco escaped and attacked a little girl, and her pregnant mother INSIDE THIER OWN HOME, or maybe it’s like the time one of your own animals bit your nose off. You are right though, I had my day in court, but due to the lies and misrepresentations of the events that day by you and your wife, it was never really a fair day in court, it never could have been. What it all boils down to is the wealthy adults lied better than four teenagers could tell the truth. If you really think about it who as more to lose you or I? I think that most will agree that it would be you, that losing the animals that you and your now ex- wife have made so much money from is much worse than me trying to stay out of jail. It really makes me sick that you portray yourselves like you love these vicious animals so much and how they are like family. I think it is now clear to every one you are nothing more than a chimp pimp. Had you not been selling these animals to reap a handsome profit, maybe Mrs. Nash would still be able show the beautiful smile that we have all seen in her pictures and now unfortunately, there is little chance of that ever happening again. It is tragic that it takes such horrific attacks like these to expose you for the fur trader you are. Your tired lies have run their course and now the TRUTH is to be heard, and for the first time in eight years, I don’t have to be ashamed to tell the truth, and I will gladly tell it to all who are will to listen.
Best of wishes,
Jason Coats

We all have the right to defend ourselves from wild animals that get loose from their confines. It is not our fault that you chimp owners don’t take necessary steps to guarantee the safety of human beings. You will never ever convince me that keeping wild animals is “SAFE”. END OF STORY AND I AGREE WITH PEGGY.

Hey brettdawg22 And guess what? If your chimp was coming at me in a threatening manner, I would still shoot it deader than dead. It’s very simple solution for wild animals that run amuck and don’t have no value for human life.
if your chimp got loose and was attacking one my family members I WOULD SHOOT IT DEADER THAN DEAD.

There’s my answer to you chimp owners.

It is interesting how very limited the vocabulary is among chimpanzee owners. Your mental capacities seem limited to calling people names. That attitude of disdain and the fact that none of you cares a bit that people are being hurt by these animals is one reason laws are needed.

Anytime a group of people attempts to threaten and intimidate others into accepting their dangerous behavior, it is time to contact our legislators for protection.

peggy, you’re an idiot. my chimp is smarter than you. if your problem with animals is safety, than you need to look at some facts. i suggest you look up the relationship between chimp owners/attacks and car owners/fatal accidents. you need to look around you and focus your stupidity, i mean your intelligence, on something that will actually harm someone today…like car accidents. i mean really, if you drove every night to the zoo and slept in the chimp exhibit, my money is on you dying on the drive to the zoo.
check the facts..
look up the real dangers in this world…chimps in american homes are not one of them.

If you are disturbed by the thought of dangerous wild animals possibly moving into your neighborhood, you may want to check your state laws pertaining to exotic pets.

I just wrote my state legislators asking that our laws be made strong and clear: NO private ownership of wild animals. I urge all of you to write your legislators. This horrible attack would not have happened if Connecticut had banned primates in private ownership, and other states have even less legislation regarding wild animals as pets..

We know chimpanzees gave the AIDS virus to humans. That alone is reason enough to minimize contact between humans and primates.

Posted 02/24/09 05:18 PM, you two are the idiots and nut cases, I agree with Peggy. Maybe you 2 need to be placed in a cage with chimps, I guarantee that both of you would be faceless and deader than dead. The chimps would tear off your faces and then eat you piece by piece. You two are dumber than dirt, dumber than a sack of rocks, dumber than a doorknob. That’s right you idiot fools. I don’t buy your bullsh*t.

Just shoot wild animals that escape the confines of their home or habitat. Including dogs that run in packs. This solution to the problem is very easy. I don’t have to write a long comment. JUST S-H-O-O-T THEM. I will not tolerate a pack of dogs or chimps or any other creature that poses a danger to my family. I prioritize, family comes first.

Just shoot wild animals that escape the confines of their home or habitat.

The owner was crazy and wrong to have that chimp in her house. In my neighborhood AND I LIVE OUT IN THE COUNTRY, animals get shot if they run wild and start chasing cattle or horses or kids. VERY SIMPLE.

The owner was crazy and wrong to have that chimp in her house.

I have tried to figure out what on earth you are trying to say, but since you do not seem to grasp basic grammatical concepts or punctuation use, it is a challenge. So here is a suggestion.

How about all you people who want pet chimpanzees, tigers, grizzlies, mambas, giant snakes, etc. just buy yourselves an island and all live together? Then the rest of us people you call “ignorant fools” and “nutcases” won’t be around to annoy you.
