Phelps: 'Sorry' for Pot Pics

0202phelps.jpg

Tarnished golden boy Michael Phelps has issued a public apology to his fans after a controversial photo surfaced of him smoking marijuana was published in the London tabloids.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in a statement released by Octagon, as reported by People magazine. "I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

The U.S. Olympic Committee also released a statement regarding the pictures of Phelps toking on a bong. It reads: "We are disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps. Michael is a role model, and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people.

"In this instance, regrettably, he failed to fulfill those responsibilities. Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion."

This isn't the first time that the 14-time Olympic gold medalist found himself diving into hot water -- Michael plead guilty to a drunk driving charge in 2004, right before swimming to multiple victories in the Athens Summer Games. He expressed regret and publicly apologized for that incident as well.

What’s wrong with you people? There is never a good excuse for doing drugs, no matter how many phony sources some of you refer to. Pot causes accidents because it impairs the judgement center of the brain. This is a fact! I’m sorry so many immature morons have trouble facing up to a little thing called reality but that’s really too bad! And to use the excuse that he is young or a really fast swimmer so that should let him off the hook? What are you people smoking?….oh yeah, pot. LOL!!!

I think that Americans need to do research on Marijuana. Marijauana was pushed to be criminalized by Dupont and others in the 1900’s. Dupont wanted to elmiminate hemp as competition so that its synthetic materials could be on top. Hemp has been used throughout the ages as a means of helping man. Marijuana is not a dangerous drug. People do your research. Phelps taking a hit of marijuana is safer than geting intoxicated with alchohol. If you dispute my claim, don’t put your effort into writing a comment and writing negative responses. Do some research!

If you had a sister who was killed because some guy thought it was ok to smoke pot and drive, you wouldn’t take this so lightly. there are many legal and safe ways to relax without doing drugs. doesn’t he know the negative affects on his mind and body!

Sigh….most of you are so narrow minded its scary. I wish I could shine the spotlight on your lives to look for any mistakes. Since there are so many perfect people posting here, lets get together so I can see you walk on water.

The difference between all of us is that we are not in the public eye or spotlight. Michael Phelps is and has to be careful of who he hangs out with and where. Someone out is always trying to make a buck off of somebody like Michael and that is very unfortunate. All of us have private lives because we are not in the spotlight.

So he smoked a few times…seeing that he is an american hero really looks bad on his part but strip him of his medals? Can you prove he was high before, during, or after the actual competitions? He earned them…and deserves them just like a justifiable punishment. Give him a T.I. He would be a great spokesman for the cause? And kids would obviously listen, but just becaus he screwed up now lets not turn our backs on him now! Few months ago you all treated him like God! Well now he is a fallen angel. *LOL*

I agree that he should be stripped of all of his medals and banned from competition. Sure athletes are human and make “mistakes”, but doing drugs it a little bit more than a “mistake”. His underage drinking was also a “mistake” previously.
An “apology” is not going to get him out of this one. You can’t do something like this and think it’s all going to go away by saying you are “sorry” and “regret” it. Again.

Be proud you smoked. You’re a real American Hero to me. The world can see it as a bad thing but to me it’s not really that bad especially for representation.

I’ve toyed for years with the idea that I’d be a great poster child for pot-smokers. Anyone who knows me would call me obsessively responsible and hard-working, and—guess what?—I am a regular smoker. I am also a regular exerciser and very healthy 40-year-old woman. I wish all of us professionals and athletes who were pot-smokers could come out of the closet. We are legion. Michael Phelps’ athletic success is not tainted by the fact that he smoked marijuana at a party. It just exposes the lie that all pot-smokers do is sit around all day and watch tv in between bong hits.

IT’S TOO FUNNY, AND ALL TOO OBVIOUS WHICH PEOPLE POSTING SMOKE POT, AND WHICH DO NOT!! LOL.

ME, MYSELF AM ANTI-DRUG ALL THE WAY.. I HAVE TO HAVE ONE HECK OF A HEADACHE TO EVEN TAKE A PILL FOR IT! PEOPLE THAT MAKE EXCUSES TO USE DRUGS ARE FUNNY BECAUSE OF ALL THE “EXCUSES” THEY COME UP WITH FOR DOING IT??? IT CURES THIS OR THAT, IT’S RELAXING, IT’S HEALTHY… BLAH BLAH BLAH… SIMPLE POINT.. YOU ARE INHALING SMOKE INTO YOUR BODY TO GET HIGH!!! NO MORE NO LESS. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LOGICAL ABOUT INHALING SMOKE INTO YOUR BODY AND IT BEING “HEALTHY”.

TO EACH THEIR OWN THOUGH. MY ‘HIGH’ IS WALKING, RUNNING, EVEN LISTENING TO SOME GOOD AND POSITIVE MUSIC!! EATING SALAD, FRUITS, VEGGIES, AND DRINKING AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF WATER.

MY PERSONAL VIEW- POT IS AN ESCAPE FROM REALITY (IF EVEN FOR A MOMENT).. IT HAS AN ADDICTIVE NATURE, AND PEOPLE USE IT TO “GET HIGH” AND ” GET AWAY FROM REALITY”. TO EACH THEIR OWN, ..BUT I RATHER APPRECIATE MY HEALTHY BODY, AND ENJOY THE BRAIN CELLS I HAVE… IT DOESN’T MAKE ME “BETTER” THAN A POT SMOKER, BUT IT DOES INDEED MAKE US DIFFERENT.

OK !! what he did might not be good for his look or for what he stands for as a role model but i mean its pot for crying out loud yes it is illegal but so what. I am not saying that what he did was right but i know every one makes mistakes, and dont say you never have . . yes it kinda added to his DUI witch i think was more wrong then this pot thing that is going on>!!

Simple right & wrong. He is a role model & a drug user. He should have his medals stripped and his endorsements revoked. As a high school teacher, I see people like Phelps only perpetuating the “everybody does it” myth to our youth. It takes a harsh response to high profile pot-heads to get the message out to our youth!

I don’t think that he did anything wrong or has anything to apologize for. So what? He smoked some pot. Big deal. He didn’t hurt anyone. This is not the same as the DUI that he got… that put other people in danger. The most this did was “disappoint” some people who think what he did was wrong. There’s no moral difference between smoking pot and drinking a beer.

I don’t think it’s fair the way people are reacting to Michael Phelps. It goes both ways I guess, what he did was wrong. But then again, ask anyone his age, everyone smokes pot. Though he has more responsibilities than most 23 year old men do. He has young fans that look up to him. AND, this isn’t the first time Phelps has been caught doing something ‘bad’ he has a DUI. Pot isn’t even that bad, and people are making too much of a big deal. He’s the fastest swimmer in the world GIVE THE MAN A BREAK.
