Phelps Endorsements to Go Up in Smoke?

0202phelpspot.jpg

The net has been abuzz since Michael Phelps' pot pix hit the web, but will the bongin' snapshots really cost the swimmer his endorsement deals?

'Extra' thinks that's just blowing smoke. The golden boy released a statement calling the picture "bad judgment" and "regrettable," and while the cannabis candid caused quite a stir, experts say it shouldn't hurt his multiple endorsement paydays.

Michael soared to worldwide fame during the 2008 Beijing Games, where the fish-like swimmer nabbed a record-breaking 8 gold medals, bringing his lifetime total to 14.

James there was a pto of Phelps and he admitted it, that is what the difference is, Phelps apologized for the photo shown around the world, he admitted he was sorry for the pic. OJ is black and he got a stiffer senctence, the white guys didn’t get as much time as oj. what is the difference?

- Hey James its' not about what race Michael is.

A black male smokes pot and does “a little blow” and we elect him president. A white male has a picture taken supposedly smoking pot and and the sky is falling.

President vowed to end policy
Thursday, February 5, 2009
!Drug Enforcement Administration agents this week raided four medical marijuana shops in California, contrary to President Obama’s campaign promises to stop the raids.

DEA Acting Administrator Michele Leonhart

The White House said it expects those kinds of raids to end once Mr. Obama nominates someone to take charge of DEA, which is still run by Bush administration holdovers.

“The president believes that federal resources should not be used to circumvent state laws, and as he continues to appoint senior leadership to fill out the ranks of the federal government, he expects them to review their policies with that in mind,” White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

Medical use of marijuana is legal under the law in California and a dozen other states, but the federal government under President Bush, bolstered by a 2005 Supreme Court ruling, argued that federal interests trumped state law.

Dogged by marijuana advocates throughout the campaign, Mr. Obama repeatedly said he was opposed to using the federal government to raid medical marijuana shops, particularly because it was an infringement on states’ decisions.

“I’m not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue,” Mr. Obama told the Mail Tribune newspaper in Oregon in March, during the Democratic primary campaign.

He told the newspaper the “basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors, I think that’s entirely appropriate.”

Mr. Obama is still filling key law enforcement posts. For now, DEA is run by acting Administrator Michele Leonhart, a Bush appointee.

Special Agent Sarah Pullen of the DEA’s Los Angeles office said agents raided four marijuana dispensaries about noon Tuesday. Two were in Venice and one each was in Marina Del Rey and Playa Del Ray — all in the Los Angeles area.

A man who answered the phone at Marina Caregivers in Marina Del Rey said his shop was the target of a raid but declined to elaborate, saying the shop was just trying to get back to operating.

Agent Pullen said the four raids seized $10,000 in cash and 224 kilograms of marijuana and marijuana-laced food, such as cookies. No one was arrested, she said, but the raid is part of an ongoing investigation seeking to trace the marijuana back to its suppliers or source.

She said agents have conducted 30 or 40 similar raids in the past several years, many of which resulted in prosecutions.

“It’s clear that the DEA is showing no respect for President Obama’s campaign promises,” said Dan Bernath, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, which advocates for medical marijuana and for decriminalizing the drug.

California allows patients whose doctors prescribe marijuana to use the drug. The state has set up a registry to allow patients to obtain cards allowing them to possess, grow, transport and use marijuana.

Kris Hermes of Americans for Safe Access, a medical marijuana advocacy group in California, called the raids an attempt to undermine state law and said they were apparently conducted without the knowledge of Los Angeles city or police officials.

He said the DEA has raided five medical marijuana dispensaries in the state since Mr. Obama was inaugurated and that the first took place on Jan. 22 in South Lake Tahoe.

“President Obama needs to keep a promise he made, not just in one campaign stop, but in multiple speeches that he would not be spending Justice Department funds on these kinds of raids,” Mr. Hermes said. “We do want to give him a little bit of leeway, but at the same time we’re expecting him to stop this egregious enforcement policy that is continuing into his presidency.”

He said he is aware that Mr. Obama has not installed his own DEA chief but that new Attorney General “Eric Holder can still suspend these types of operations.”

A great olympian-A representative for our country-A ROLE MODEL FOR OUR CHILDREN… and this is how he behaves. Please think of what your children are going to get out of this message. If he isn’t repremanded for his behavior that sends a message that it is okay. Well it’s not, it is still ILLEGAL.

No, this pot hasn’t been around forever. Most marijuana grown today is super potent, with concentrations of chemicals that could have disastrous effects on the brain, not to mention the genome. We already know it can push people who are genetically vulnerable into schizophrenia, and that’s just one example.

Foolish, foolish behavior

oh come on. some of you people are so busy popping prescription pills you cant drag your heads up off the dinner table to comprehend that the “war on drugs” is a facade created by ultra conservatives and financed by big pharma.

this is pot, fer gosh sakes. it’s been around forever. as much as you’ve swallowed the lie that it’s a gateway drug, there is very little evidence that supporst that claim.

alcohol and prescription - lifesyle - drugs are a bigger problem than pot. former president george bush was a cocaine addict, but you still voted for him!

Incredibly stupid to get caught up in something like this - and I don’t normally login to voice my opinion. But I have 3 sons, 21, 13 and 9 - all of whom have the sports dream and who were impressed with what Michael could do at the Olympics. Does this change my opinion of him - YES - and I think it should cost Phelps some of his endorsements - because it is still illegal and it is still NOT the example we want for our children. I hope the companies who pull his endorsements do so for the RIGHT REASON and not as a way to get out of their contract because of the economic “downturn.” Everyone needs to wake up and NOT smell the smoke or do stupid things - especially when you are a ROLE MODEL.

days will turn into months, months will turn into years, this will all blow over. I think he is genuine and candid about the incident. I truly believe he is sorry and I hope that he doesn’t stop his swimming because of all this. we all learn through life experiences and he knows better now. I am disturbed that at the party, someone with a camera was out to get him…The best advice ever, TELL ME WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE AND I WILL TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE. Those weren’t true friends of Michael, he needs to scrutinize his company or so called friends. They are leeches just waiting for Michael to mess up. I hope he stays away from the jerks that are tryin to bring him done. They won’t succeed, Michae is still popular and I truly admire for being a great olympian. that’s what stands out the most, his olympian credentials.

He’s just a normal young man that made a bad judgement. Men older than him make these mistakes.

Personally I think people are too sensitive. Relax a little

Richland sheriff could charge Phelps

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says he will charge Michael Phelps with a crime if he determines the Olympics hero smoked marijuana in Richland County.

Phelps, who set a record with eight gold medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics, was photographed smoking a marijuana pipe at a November party in Columbia.

The picture was published in the British newspaper News of the World. Phelps apologized Sunday, calling his behavior “inappropriate.”

Cocky shows some respect to US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps during a timeout as University of South Carolina No. takes on University of Arkansas in the first half at Williams Brice Stadium on Saturday, November 8, 2008.

Story: Reactions mixed to Phelps’ (mis)behavior while in town

“This case is no different than any other case,” Lott said Monday. “This one might be a lot easier since we have photographs of someone using drugs and a partial confession. It’s a relatively easy case once we can determine where the crime occurred.”

Possession of marijuana is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a $570 fine, plus court costs.

But Lott seems to be the only person talking about making a case against Phelps. Both the USC and Columbia Police Departments said they would not pursue charges.

It was unclear Monday where the party took place, including whether it was on campus.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Phelps’ sponsors — from apparel company Speedo to luxury Swiss watchmaker Omega — issued statements calling the incident a “nonissue.” The International Olympic Committee accepted his apology.

“We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model,” the IOC said in a statement.

At the University of South Carolina, where Phelps was visiting when the picture was taken, the mood was largely “who cares?”

“It’s not a surprise,” said India Jones, a sophomore biology major. “He’s young, and he is human. They’ll probably let him off easy because he owned up to it.”

Lots of public figures have admitted to smoking marijuana — including President Barack Obama.

Rapper Lil Wayne, who professes his love for marijuana and other substances in his music, has a leading eight Grammy nominations this year. Phelps said he listened to Wayne’s graphic song “I’m Me” to pump him up for races at the Olympics.

When Phelps hosted “Saturday Night Live” on Sept. 13, Lil Wayne was the musical guest.

This isn’t the first time Phelps has been in trouble following a gold medal performance. In 2004, fresh off his wins in the Athens Olympics, he pleaded guilty to drunken driving in Maryland.

Forgiveness of Phelps could be attributed to how he handled both situations — admitting up front he did it and apologizing, said Matt Brown, associate professor for sport and entertainment management at the University of South Carolina.

“America is a forgiving society, and he came out and apologized immediately,” Brown said. “I think as long as we don’t see more pictures coming out and more things coming out that he’s been doing this consistently, he’ll be OK.”

It also helps that many see Phelps as a nice guy. When he was in Columbia, he took time to speak to a class on sports’ role in society.

“It was amazing how gracious and how humble and just how helpful he tried to be,” said Sid Kenyon, a USC adjunct professor who taught the class. “I can’t tell you how impressed I was with his mannerism and just how willing he was to help and do anything that we asked him.”

The Phelps story broke not in a sports magazine, but in a celebrity newspaper. Sports and entertainment journalism have been merging for years, Brown said, never more so than in the Olympics, which attracts a wider audience — including the kind of people who watch celebrity news on “Entertainment Tonight.”

“It becomes much more of an entertainment event than a sports event,” he said.

Sweeney said if Phelps is caught transgressing a third time, he could stand to lose many sponsorships — and the public’s trust. For now, the public and his sponsors could look past it. After all, he said, President Barack Obama has acknowledged using marijuana and he still got elected.————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————that’s part of the paragraph of the comment,” Phelps avoids hot water with sponsors — for now” JUST GOES TO SAY THAT OBAMA ADMITTED HIS PAST TRANGRESSIONS AND SO DID MICHAEL PHELPS. MICHAEL CAN MOVE FORWARD NOW, I WISH HIM THE BEST OF LUCK.
