Phelps Declares 'I Don't Take Drugs'

"Extra" has obtained a Splash News interview with Michael Phelps and the swimming phenomenon states, "I don't take drugs. I get drug tested all the time. You look at the records and you can see."

The Olympic superstar also confesses it was a mistake to smoke marijuana and take pictures, saying, "It's times like these where you really do get true support. I've been able to really find out who my friends and family are through this. By no means has it been easy... it's a bad judgment and a bad mistake and something I'll learn from."

What do you think? Discuss this in our "Extra" community!

gina, you really believe what you’re saying??? you need to read more medical research articles and not get your information from propaganda. And the bit about 600% + increased potency is b.s., as there has always been potent strains throughout history. The plant, which is natural, has always been manipulated by man for utilization. Hemp is marijuana bred more for its strong fibers [once urged by the US govt to be grown], just like higher potency strains [18-20% THC content] are bred more for their medical potential. Corn is hybridized yet you use corn products. How about soy beans? So that shows some invalid points you present. The forefathers grew pot and said it was to the colonies best interest to grow marijuana as it has so many uses, is easy to take care of, and easy to process. Ford designed the Model T to run on biofuel made from pot. If you wanna go back to ancient times, marijuana has been found in archaeological digs all over the world. Only since the 1900s has marijuana started to be seen as a negative thing and become illegal; mostly due to the high percentage of morphine and herion addicts and to control minority groups. I seriously think you need to read more scientific articles on the topic and expand your mind instead of blindly judging and presenting false data as facts. Many of the anti-pot propaganda used “scientific” studies for their prove, but they used poor experiment design. For example, the study used to conclude pot kills brain cells took monkeys and pumped pot smoke using masks. They didn’t tell you they would pump pure pot smoke for 12-18 hours into the masks. The lack of oxygen alone would cause brain damage. This shows how “scientific” research can be falsely used to misrepresent marijuana. I could go on and on… Nixon ran the most extensive testing ever done on marijuana because he wanted hard proof pot was bad for health and a way to deal with the hippies as most smoked pot, but none of the results showed negative outcomes from pot use. He threw out the results as it contradicted what he wanted the results to be… science at its best… :-/ so sad. Anyways… all of you need to stop listening to what people tell you and read and find facts out for yourself, especially you anti-pot people.

yeah smoking pot is considering “taking drugs” - and yes, michael phelps is considered to be a huge role model - but he’s HUMAN - stuff happens, move on— he knows what he did was wrong - leave him alone, hes still an amazing swimmer in my eyes and that never will change

Oh boy, I cannot believe how many responders to this story think marijuana is “natural” and so it can’t hurt you.

You think it’s “natural” to smoke leaves? Some indigenous people in South America might chew on coca leaves throughout the day. But do they hybridize it to increase its active compounds by 600% (at least) and then smoke it? No, that wouldn’t be “natural.”

Wise up, folks. If you don’t care about your brain function and future health, think about your unborn children. The chemicals you’re ingesting now have very real and lasting effects on your sperm and eggs. (And yes, it’s the same with alcohol, but at least that’s been studied and probably has a lesser effect.)

To mindlessly smoke marijuana and say that it’s okay for everyone without at least knowing more about this subject simply sounds like addicts defending their addiction.

Hang tuff man, don’t let em get to you. I can’t do anything about Kelloggs ( except I wrote them and told them of my anger at THEM ) and write you best I can and say you have done NOTHING WRONG, our governments polices are wrong.

look, it’s just weed. not steroids. If this kid can smoke weed and still swim like that, then I am impressed, weed slows you down it’s not an enhancer. Actually he should get an extra gold metal if he can be high and do that. like most people said, give the kid a break, he is young, famous, and doing what most young people would do if they were in his shows. Just like britney making a big deal out of nothing.

Honestly I think that our country has bigger problems to worry about. Phelps made a mistake, get over it! If anyone can tell me that they have NEVER made a mistake then WOW what a person you are! Who does Kellogg’s think they are, honestly! He does not need them. Yeah you can say that he signed a contract with them, well let me just ask how many ppl have NEVER broken any rules at work. NONE!!! It is in out nature to make mistake and face it he is 23 years old who worked HARD for what he has and a lot has been put on his shoulders. What I don’t understand is why ppl forget they are not perfect. Just because someone gets fame does not me that we Americans should scrutinize every move they make! As we watch the news look how many celebrities make mistakes, look how many athletes make the wrong choice. The only reason why you don’t hear anything about your life is because you have not done something so amazing like Phelps! And just think about it….If he was taking a drug enhancer I would be worried but Weed, come on that only slows you down. Just leave him alone I am sure that he hates himself enough without everyone in the world talking about him.
As for me I still think he rocks and I am glad that my daughter likes him. I think kids could use this situation as a learning experience. I am not sure what world some people live in but kids need to be taught about drugs and what a better way to teach them. I think he can use this experience and educate kids about drugs! As for Kellogg’s I hate there products anyways but I don’t think it will EVER be in my house again!
Love ya Phelps, hang in there people will find someone else to pick on soon enough!

it is a very simple thing to check if he takes drugs or smokes pot.As a nurse we (hospital) did drug testing every day. It is quite definite, especially re: pot. it can stay in your system(fat) for up to a couple of months . give the guy a chance to be tested if he chooses or leave the guy alone.

Pot is a drug, it gets you high, it is addictive and illegal, he knew what his responsibilities were when he signed his contracts. I support Kelloggs completely.

I’m sure all of his contracts state what is expected of him. He broke the rules, and as simple as that, he’s is being held responsible for breaking those rules. A youthful, immature thing to do. Yeah, it’s stupid that marijuana isn’t available to the masses. I prefer it were, it might make getting a job easier with all the potheads wasted on their couches during those critical OMFG it’s legal week. Legalized weed would help the economy and open up jobs for people who don’t do drugs to escape life.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. (K) (K) says it will not renew its sponsorhip contract with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps because he has acknowledged smoking marijuana last fall.

The Battle Creek, Mich.-based company said Thursday that Phelps’s behavior - caught on camera and published Sunday - is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.”

The company put Phelps on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.

Phelps has kept the backing of many sponsors since the photos surfaced that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Phelps’s agent was not immediately available to comment.

Kellogg says its contract with Phelps expires at the end of the month.

Email Kellogg company right now and tell them what jerks they are, that you will never ever buy their product/s again, and oh, that you’re not going to take it anymore. Thanks!

Give the guy a break. He may have smoked a little weed, but that does not make him a rehab candidate. He’s just a young guy, and they should forgive and forget.

So he smokes a little weed, WHO CARES. He is still the best swimmer of all time, and what is that saying. I think whats so shocking about this story is the fact it challenges the century old religiously and racially motived stereo types of smoking weed, “itll make you lazy and unsuccessful.” Michael should just say it is what it is and im still the best. period.
