Owner Mourns TV Chimp: 'I'll Miss Him'

0218chimp.jpg

Travis, a beloved TV chimpanzee, mauled 55-year-old Charla Nash in a vicious attack on Monday, but owner Sandra Herold admits she'll miss the chimp she raised as her own. "I'll miss him for the rest of my life," Herold said of the animal on "Today."

Sandra and her husband raised Travis like a son -- which made the tragedy on Monday much more painful for her, as she was forced to stab the chimpanzee in an attempt to save her friend. "I went and had to get a knife," Herold says of her efforts to save Charla. "I had to... He looked at me like, 'Mom, what did you do?'" The chimp was eventually shot and killed by police.

Actress Morgan Fairchild co-starred with Travis in an Old Navy commercial. She tells "Extra" that the chimp never exhibited aggressive behavior on the set. "I have a great still photograph of us sitting there with his arm around me just being absolutely adorable like your average 5-year-old."

"I think she is heartbroken," Fairchild says of Herold. "These are very smart animals." Despite her interaction with the chimp, Morgan admits that killing it to save Charla was the right thing to do. "It is a shame, it is a sin that this animal had to be destroyed," she explains. "Considering the circumstances, I think it should have been killed, but wild animals should never be kept as pets because it's always going to act like a wild animal."

Animal Planet's Dave Salmoni agrees with Fairchild, saying, "You cannot raise a chimpanzee as a baby and try to make it domesticated and think, 'Well, if I love it enough, it's not going to attack.'"

What do you think of the chimp attack? Discuss the controversy in our "Extra" community.

I heard that the chimp was agitated because of the purification rundown and a vitamin overdose but I don’t know if it’s true, it was in a German newspaper though.

I think it is HORRIBLE that the poor chimp was killed. What the hell? The chimp is stabbed and then shot? It is not the fault of the animal.

How many dogs attack humans everyday and are still allowed as pets?!! I know someone personally who has and had monkeys. I bring my own children around them. There are freak accidents with every kind of animal on this earth…does this mean we should kill them all?!?!?!

It was incredibly irresponsible for Extra to even interview this woman. Travis’ owner has no business publicly mourning an animal on TV while her friend/neighbor is fighting for her life. The victim lost her eyes and nose and might require a face transplant. It’s horribly insensitive to be talking about anything but her tragic disfigurement and painful recovery.

I whole-heartedly agree with Jeff’s comments at 3:01PM. From all of the articles I’ve read, Ms. Herold loved Travis like a child. I think people should be a little more compassionate towards her. I highly doubt she would have kept him around had she thought he posed a threat.
I feel terribly sorry for Ms. Nash and think that Ms. Herold should be held accountable but calling her an idiot is insensitive and somewhat like calling a mother of a child an idiot if her child acts up. That’s not fair.
This is a very sad story….very sad….in more ways than one.

The real tragedy is that the chimp probably would have been fine after the xanax wore off. I mean I wouldn’t give a wild boar LSD and hang out in a room with it to see what happens… I mean to quote George Bush “I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” but humans and monkeys.. hmmmm I guess we all learned something about cohabitating with fellow primates.

Oh no, they killed a chimp. I think they should have let it eat both women to make up for the crimes we as humans have commited toward mother earth…

Naw, chimp goes nuts, opens a door to mess with a cop, and gets a bullet or two. Just like people. If I went nuts and started eating peoples faces, then went after a cop after being hit by a shovel and stabbed they sure as hell would put a slug or two in me. (mind you for me to be the same treat level while unarmed as this little bugger I would have to be tripping something wicked on PCP)

I really find this story to be really funny… WTF was she thinking of having a wild animal in her house like that? She should have known better and this sad sad sad story wouldn’t be a reality…

I think this is so very sad!! I hope the person that the chimp attacked will have a 100% recovery!! She (mom) and the police did the right thing. My heart goes out to all involved! This reminds me of the “bear guy” that thought he knew all about bears and got too close. I think this is a lesson for all of us- We should never domesticate a wild animal-ever ever- they may seem to be predictable and trustable but sooner or later nature takes over. I do not blame anyone for this tradegy- This is just another example of A lesson that should be learned by all!!

This story is so tragic on every level. These animals can NEVER be completely domesticated. Not chimps, elephants, tigers, lions, bears, wolves. The general public should not be allowed to own exotics. Period! And perhaps Iberville Parish in Gross Tete, Louisiana should take note since they have just voted to do the same thing with a tiger, Tony, that has been kept in a cage at a truck stop for fifteen years. In spite of numerous USDA violations they have just voted to grandfather the tiger in and allow the owner to keep him at the truck stop in spite of great opposition by animal rights activists.

i Love animals but it was not right to kill that animal it should have been tranquilized. NOT killed
Chimps are wild animals not pets.
you would not have a Tiger as a pet ,would you
