Joaquin, Are You There?

Actor turned rapper Joaquin Phoenix stopped by "Late Show with David Letterman" to talk about his new film, "Two Lovers". The scruffy star seemed like he was on another planet and hardly cracked a smile during the interview. Letterman had to pull teeth to get the uncomfortably awkward Phoenix to answer any questions. Dave wrapped up the appearance by saying "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight."

Phoenix is the subject of a documentary directed by brother-in-law Casey Affleck. They follow him as he moves from the world of movies to a career in hip-hop music. The "Walk the Line" star told Letterman he would be happy to perform on "The Late Show" when he starts promoting his album.

An "Extra" producer was on the red carpet for the New York City premiere of "Two Lovers" last night. She says Phoenix didn't talk to the press. The documentary crew asked all media to sign a release in order to speak with Joaquin on camera. No one would sign the document. Stay tuned for more wacky behavior!

What do you think? Is Phoenix pulling a stunt -- or has he walked the line off deep end? Join the discussion!

HE WAS DOPED UP, SHAMEFUL BEHAVIOR, I SAW THE INTERVIEW, WHAT A WASTE OF LETTERMAN’S TIME AND THE VIEWERS AS WELL. IT WAS DISGUSTING TO SEE HIM ACT LIKE AN A**.

think it’s a hoax? look in his eye’s, his body language, his wrinkled annoyed forehead, his wringing of his hand’s constantly. constant water intake. if this is a hoax, he’s a better actor than i’ve given him credit for, but i’ve given him kuddos as did dave before the zombie began to speak. this guy has skipped out, and never should have been forced or even encouraged to promote this film, guess time will tell, but my guess is what was sparking life in those beautiful eye’s 3 years ago is a long distant memory for the person i saw on tv 2 nights ago.

I think Joaquin is a talented person who should do whatever he wants…I mean it is his life right?

As to Joaquin’s appearance on Letterman.. I don’t even know why this is newsworthy. Anyone that has seen Bill Murray, or Steve Martin, or Jim Carrey play out a role when on Letterman for a laugh would ‘get’ this kind of act. That is just what it was.. Joaquin playing a role on stage. It was actually funny and no real drama worth speculating over.. All in dry humor fun :)

I have always kinda liked Joaquin. If this is an act-I don’t know where its leading to. I can only suspect substance abuse, which is sad to think.

This has to be a hoax or project he is working on with Casey Affleck, a la Andy Kaufman. The only other possibility is that he’s on drugs, something I’d hope he’d never do after the untimely death of his talented brother.

It was painful to watch Joaquin mumble through his appearance. So sad. I don’t know what he was on. But he definately needs help before he ends up like his brother.

what the heck, does he not remember the brother he had that overdosed on drugs, isnt that how he died, River his name was, i think its an act, or he really needs some major help because he is totally whacked out, and it is NOT cool.

What a loser! He’s an idiot! He was stoned or something. He was very rude to Letterman. I’m tired of those “Hollywood Stars” who act like idiots just to get attention.
Mr. Phoenix: If you’re tired of being an actor, just do yourself a favor and retire! We don’t want another wannabe singer!

he must be preparing for a role for a future movie and he is “playing” the part now…he’s an actor…it’s showbiz…he’s trying to pull your leg…testing the ground to see if he is believable or not…and you’re so naive to believe that this is not an act…just wait and see…

C'mon....

I have seen his hip hop career on you tube. I think Mr. Pheonix should go back and beg forgiveness from Letterman. All the guy did in those clip was mubble kind of what he did last night only to music and fall off the stage. I hope his IRA’s and 401K is fully loaded because he can kiss ANY kind of career good bye.

Joaquin was so obviously on something. He deserved everything David was dishing at him.And as far as his “hip hop” career, I see a no hit wonder coming.
