"Extra" Lifechanger and youth and family psychologist Dr. Gabe Crenshaw was a hot topic on Extratv.com after this segment aired. We received dozens of video comments overnight and hundreds of text comments -- and now, Dr. Gabe has taken to the web to answer your questions!

Dr. Crenshaw,
What causes schizophrenia and what is the treatment?
- Terry

DR. GABE'S ANSWER:
Terry, one of the leading causes of schizophrenia is too much dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the "feel good" neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) responsible for getting you excited and pleasantly worked-up. But too much of a good thing is no good, sometimes. So, some doctors use antipsychotics and neuroleptic medication to treat some schizophrenic patients.

Dr. Gabe:
I really hate to admit this, but, my boyfriend still supports his 31 year son to the tune of about $1400.00/month. His son can't keep a job (doesn't even really try), and he has 6 children who he doesn't support and has issues with drugs and the law.My boyfriend and I have been to 3 different psychologist over the past 5 years that we have been together. All the counselors offer ways/plans for him and his son, but, my boyfriend doesn't seem to even want to stop what he calls "helping" his son. Can you offer any suggestions? Thanks.
- Angela

DR. GABE'S ANSWER:
Angela, it seems you have some concerns about this father/son arrangement; but it appears your fiancée doesn't have any issues with it. If neither of the men has a problem with their arrangement, then no amount of therapy in the world will "fix" what isn't "broken."

Dr. Crenshaw
I had a accident at a hospital and I was stuck with a bloody needle the needle was mixed up in something that i was picking up and now I feel like I can't function in different areas in my life because I might contract a disease in the future is this a psychological problem that I'm having could that accident be the reason why I feel like I can't function in certain areas

- Nissan

DR. GABE'S ANSWER:
Nissan, there is research that suggest that people who go through a traumatic experience can sometime relive the trauma in some form. We call it Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
When the memory (hippocampus) of the event and the emotion(s) (amygdala) it conjured up come together, one can possibly experience some anxiety and tense moments. Consult with your primary care provider and have him/her make an appropriate recommendation for your specific needs.

Dear Dr. Gabe,
My fiance and I have been together for 7 years. We have been engaged for two. When we started dating I wanted to get married, now I am not so sure. I want us to remain in our committed relationship. I just do not want to get married. How do I tell him this?

Lojia
LA, Cali

DR. GABE'S ANSWER:
Lojia, consider the possibility of simply being open and honest with your fiancé. It seems as if you've been honest with yourself and the sky didn't fall. Maybe it might work with your fiancé, too. Some research suggests making a list of the pro's and con's of your situation or just "sleeping on it" can possibly provide some clarity.

Hey Dr. Gabe --
I am a Latin. How do I blend my Latin culture with the American culture without loosing my natural heritage?
East Los Angeles

- Nubia

DR. GABE'S ANSWER:
Multicultural experts suggests that any culture can be maintained through the honoring and celebration of its traditional holidays, foods, dances, and of course, languages of the cultural/ethnic communities. You may even extend elements of your traditions to outside cultures as a way of educating them on the rich heritage. In this way, you blend both worlds without feeling like you've lost your natural heritage.

Hey,What’s up Doc. Ha,Ha,Ha
Anyway, after listening to your summation about Michal Jackson’s shielding his children because of the press and his experiences with them also. I was quite amazed at how people have a tendency to transfer their tramatic experiences on others unknowningly. Now, mind you Mr.Jackson has honorable motives, that I am sure of. But the pyschological ramifications of this shielding may have an adverse effect on the children in the future. For instance, they have a possibility of becoming hermets or isolators or maybe even very lonley children seperated from their emotions. I don’t know Dr.Gabe. I want the best for them just thinking. You are the True Doctor of this study. Always patiently, awaiting your comments. Don’t Stop. SMILE——————————————-

Dr. Gabe,

I think Chris Brown is innocent because if Rihanna is the violent one in this relationship, then whyu should we put in jail the person that was trying to defend himself? Just because he is a man? Men can be mistreated mentally, and emotinally as well, driving them to act the way they do as as way to release their way.

Also, thank you for coming to our school.

Dr. Gabe, when you spoke to my school the other week about Rihanna & Chris Brown, my first reaction was despite people making jokes about domestic violence, it’s really a heavy issue. It can turn into a continuous cycle.

Dr. Gabe

This is really bad especially knowing that youhng adults are going through this. In my opinion I think you need to know the situation and their family background before you start to blame any one.

Dr. Gabe when are you coming back to our school?

Dr. Gabe.

I think this whole situation went over board. Chris Brown and Rihanna are young and nowadays when tenens get into arguments they both like to hit each other. I know that Chris Brown didn’t just hit Rihanna, he had to be provoked and she had to have put her hands on him first, way too many times. She said so herself that she and her brothes used to physically fight. So she has a violent history. I also thought it was a publicity stunt.

Thanks for speaking at our school last week.

Dr. Gabe, I was shocked at how abuse can take place even with celebrities. This will be somthing the media will never forget. Rihanna and Chris Brown need to settle the issue through therapy.

Thanks for speaking to our school last week.

Dr. Gabe when you came to our school last week and spoke with us on the topic of Chis & Rihanna, my first inital reaction was of surprise. Even though we all don’t know the whole story, Chris should have never put his hands on Rihanna. No mater how heated the argument or discussion escalated to. I think what it boils down to is self control on both of their parts. Self control and responsiblity, Honest and Trust. Key elements to a healty relationship. They’re young as well. Take that into consideration as well. Young entertainers go through the same things we (the youth) do but behind closed doors. In any event hitting a male or femaile, provoked or not is wrong. ABSOLUTELY!

Ok. Dr. Gabe:
I see girlfriends arguing with their boyfriends all of the time on campus, at the club, even in the mall. It’s just kinda what we do. Sure I get scared sometimes, but, to think my boyfriend would throw a bottle or something at me is unthinkable. I don’t know what to think. Who’s thinking that they’re going to get like a beat down or something because of a text?! What’s the solution, no boyfriend? Yeah, right! Who am I kidding. What are some more warning signs, I think my girlfriends in trouble!

Hello Dr. Crenshaw
It is so good to see that you are taking the time to answer our questions. I am anxiously awaiting a response to my question regarding why do men(married or single) become more insecure as women become more successfully in their careers and excel in life.

Yeah, Dr. Gabe, Your answer to Nubia, re: holding onto your heritage resonated with me! I am a Cuban-American. I came to this country in 1966 and I still read, speak and write Spanish still. I’m the only one out of my siblings who does, after all these years. I always wanted to teach my children and grandchildren about their heritage. All of my kids are half African-American and Cuban and I didn’t want them to lose their Cuban heritage. Besides in California, you can earn more money if you’re bi-lingual:-)!!!

I just saw a story on the news that has broken my heart. Some man in wilmington has killed himself and entire family because of his work situation. This happy not too long ago in Porter Ranch where a dad killed himself and the entire family because of financial problems. What makes someone do something like this? Killing himself is bad enough , but his whole family and children? Help me understand… Our economy is so bad will this happy again and again as people loose their jobs?

Dr. Crenshaw,
I know you were bombarded with A LOT of questions and it would probably take days to answer all of them. I just figured you probably would not be answering or having any sort of follow up, but it is GREAT to see that you have taken time to answer at least a few. Hopefully you can keep the answers flowing back and maybe have another helpful segment for us viewers. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
