Obama revamps rules on detainees
Updated
President Obama signs an executive order closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay Thursday in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington.

WASHINGTON — President Obama unleashed a passionate debate about the treatment of terrorism suspects by ordering sweeping changes in the rules for interrogation and the closing of the military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
Acting swiftly on a campaign promise two days after his inauguration, Obama signed a series of executive orders Thursday that call for closing Guantanamo within a year and moving out its 245 remaining detainees, shuttering CIA prisons overseas, and prohibiting harsh interrogation techniques such as waterboarding, which gives the sensation of drowning.

THE OVAL: ‘Values and ideals’ drive U.S. policy

In reversing policies set by the Bush administration, Obama said he wanted to send a message to the world that the United States will pursue the struggle against terrorism “in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals.”

The actions set off a debate in Congress, where Republicans decried the possibility that terrorists such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, would be transferred to military prisons in places such as California and Kansas.

WHAT THE HELL IS OBAMA THINKING? START HELPING US HERE IN AMERICA 1ST, DEAL WITH THOSE SOB’S LATER, OBAMA IS NOT PRIORITIZING, WE SHOULD ALL COME FIRST AND OUR SOLDIERS.

Obama reverses U.S. abortion-funding policy
|

THE ‘ROE’ RULING

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade in 1973 that a Texas law criminalizing most abortions violated a woman’s constitutional right of privacy, which the court said was implicit in the due-process clause of the 14th Amendment.

“Jane Roe” was an alias used to shield the identity of Norma McCorvey, who sued Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade.

In the 7-2 decision, the court sought to balance a woman’s right to privacy with a state’s interest in regulating abortion. Only a “compelling state interest” would justify restrictions, it concluded. Legal challenges have limited the reach of Roe but not overturned it.
WASHINGTON — President Obama on Friday quietly ended the Bush administration’s ban on giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide information on the option.
Liberal groups welcomed the decision, while abortion rights foes criticized the president.

Known as the “Mexico City policy,” the ban has been reinstated and then reversed by Republican and Democratic presidents since Ronald Reagan established it in 1984. Democrat Bill Clinton ended the ban in 1993, but Republican George W. Bush re-instituted it in 2001 as one of his first acts in office.

After the meeting, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, questioned the size of the bill, now at $825 billion but expected to grow. “We expressed our concern about some of the spending that is being proposed in the House bill,” he said.” We’re borrowing this money from our kids.”

He said he doesn’t understand, for example, why the bill includes “hundreds of millions” of dollars for contraceptives. “How does that stimulate the economy?” he asked.

SOUNDS LIKE THINGS ARE HEADED DOWNHILL INSTEAD OF UPHILL. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT.

Michelle was definitely beautiful IN SPITE of the clothes which did nothing to enhance her beauty or flatter her figure and that train got in her way too many times to mention. Where is the stylist she deserves???

I didn’t like either outfit, especially the gown. It looked like torn sheets and fuzzy balls on it. She could have chose something so much more up to date and elegant.

if you heard his speech he mentioned all americans and the economy. people commenting on the dresses is just a distraction instead of thinking how bad the economy is, i think about it everyday and how will the U.S. get bailed out. California has a 42 billion deficit. I heard on the news that disabled, women with children on welfare rolls, the elderly might not get their monthly checks, the state wants to issue them all IOU’S. Unless they come up with some money somewhere, that is what is going to happen. some of the elderly barely get enough to survive on. I think about all that, it’s a financial crisis in California. What caN we all do? the officials are in control of the money? And I am sure that there are other states facing the same problem.

- some of us know that there is a financial crisis

This is absolutely ridiculous! Here our economy is in crisis and alls anyone wants to talk about is the gowns, the celebrities, etc. at the inaugural ball. I think our country has lost sight of what is really important. I’m thrilled to have Obama as my president and I truly hope that he doesn’t get side-tracked by all of the stardom - especially considering it seems that just about every celebrity wants to be his best friend! All Americans deserve his attention regardless of how much money they make or how famous ‘they think’ they are! On another note, I was appalled to hear that President Bush and Laura were booed at President Obama’s swearing in ceremony. Regardless if you believed in Bush or not… what an ill-bred, ill-mannered way to act! We as American’s should show a little more class! Shame on you!

Both dresses were awful, all that bling in the daytime? The color didn’t flatter, and I agree with Betsy, ball gown looked like a chenille bedspread.

Better enjoy the stardust now, but before long it will be more like sand in your eyes.
