VOTE: Arf! America's First Dog

0112dog.jpg

The people want to know: what kind of dog is the Obama family going to bring to the White House?

President-elect Barack Obama told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week" that the family has narrowed down their options. Obama revealed the pet will probably be a Labradoodle or a Portuguese Water Dog.

"Extra" wants to know what you think!

I am voting for the Portuguese Water Dog; my step-son and his mother show their dog Max (who just happens to be a PWD) in the local and tri-state area for the AKC, UKC and CPE shows; they are also members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Greater Chicagoland!!!

I think they should adopt a pitbull. I always vote for the underdog.

My vote is for a rescue greyhound. They are beautiful loving creatures, that are great for families. They need one good run/day and then are the biggest couch potatoes. Another benefit, is that if would bring awareness to the the cruelty of do tracks.

How about a cockapoo. Smart, cuddly, hypoallergenic and small.

Since the new dog is specifically for the daughters…my vote is for the Obama’s to get a Shizu. It’s a nice “girly” lapdog for Sasha and Malia.

Hi Extra,
I think the Obama’s should rescue a dog. It doesn’t matter what kind, although I realize their daughter has an allergy. They should definatly consider adoption.
Thanks

I think the Obamas’ should consider adopting a homeless dog from a shelter. Also the dog should be spayed or neutered. Thousands of healthy animals are euthanaized each year due to overpopulation. They have the opportunity to teach their children and the nation about responsible pet ownership through their example.

I agree with the retired racing greyhound comment. We have 3 of them and they have very short hair, little dander and are extremely sweet, calm friends. I think if the President rescues a retired greyhound, it would encourage more Americans to do the same.

A Labradoodle is NOT a purebred dog, it’s a mixed breed. The new president should choose a purebred dog as the family companion.

i think they should get a maltese cause they are cute and small and very easy to take care of. I have one my self and all she does is lay down and when she wants to play she gives you her toy. SO MALTESE!

It would be great if they adopted a retired racing Greyhound. No matter what, they need to adopt a rescue dog!

In my opinion I think they should get as Golden Retriever.
Because its a very playful dog and anybody can love it.

I am a Vet assistant and dealing with dogs is my business. Any dog has the potential to be a great family pet with proper training and lots of love. In my opinion though, Golden retrievers make wonderful and loyal family pets. As wonderful as small pets are beware… the small ones tend to be nippers. Also pet messes are inevitable, but there are great products out there for things like pet hair. Either way please adopt as adoption rates have dropped in the past year and there are thousands of pets out there that need great homes. Thanks

The number one family dog in the akc for the last i don’t know how many years is the labrador retriever. We have a yellow one who went through hurricane floydd with us as a puppy and has been a great family member. We have 4 grandchildren (ages 3,4,6,9) and she just loves them. she is an inhouse dog and no matter what dog you get if you train him or her correctly (with love and kindness)you will receive the same back. The first one that comes to you should be taken into consideration.

I have friends with a Labradoodle - uncontroable!
Try a Miniture Pincher - very smart dogs

Labradoodles are not very smart. They also require alot of grooming. Any large dog is going to leave a large mess in the White House. Go smaller.
