Why Salmon Isn't Always Healthy

"Extra's" Lifechanger, Dr. Neal Barnard, tells "Extra" why salmon isn't the health food you think it is. The answer may surprise you! Click to watch.

Barnard is informed with old-school, outdated information. Saturated fat is not bad for you at all, it’s how people are meant to get energy (not from carbs!).

Liz: and you’re wrong, meat is completely healthy as long as the livestock is raised properly. It’s funny, you say you’re living proof that vegetarianism is the healthy way, but I can say that going Paleo & cutting out grains is the way to go, because by only eating fruits, vegetables, eggs, fish, poultry, and beef, I’ve lost 30 lbs and have way more energy than I used to. That’s right, by increasing my saturated fat intake, I’ve actually shed significant weight. Proof enough?

In the end, grain-eaters and sugar-eaters are the ones who will end up with the worst health problems.

citizen sounds like Rick Berman.

When Rick Berman wins, we all lose, including him, because we’ll all be dead slaves to the profiteering food industry, controlling our bodies and minds with food warfare and turning humanity into slaves.

BuzzKill and Citizen YOU SIMPLY DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE COMMENTING. YOU ARE JUST SIMPLY ENVIOUS ABOUT THE NOT ONLY GOOD THINGS FOR PEOPLE AND ANIMALS BUT THE TRUTH PCRM SHARES. TRUTH HURTS WE KNOW AND NO NEED TO TWIST IT. I’M A PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND ALL OF OUR PATIENTS WHO FOLLOWED RELIGIOUSLY THE ADVICE AND TREATMENT WERE ABLE TO RECOVER FROM DISEASES. LET YOUR FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE AND YOUR MEDICINE BE YOUR FOOD. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. SALMON FISH!?! I REALLY LIKE SALMON FISH BUT I KNOW THEY JUST HAVE THE RISKY FAT(THAT MANY PEOPLE STILL DON’T KNOW)AND SALMON FISH IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST MERCURY IN IT. TRY EATING SALMON FISH IN ONE WEEK CONSISTENTLY EVERYDAY. IM SURE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMMENT HERE ANYMORE…GO TO BARNES AND NOBLES OR BOOKS A MILLION AND DO YOUR UP TO DATE RESEARCH. IF YOU HAVE MESS YOUR OWN LIFE DONT MESS OTHERS LIVES BUT HELP SAVE MORE LIVES. I KNOW VERY WELL THE PEOPLE OF PCRM IM SURE YOU DON’T KNOW THEM.

Haha! Citizen, you think people on low-fat diets are hostile!?!?!?! Try looking in a mirror. Your posting about Barnard is one of the most hostile things I’ve ever read. Maybe you should be eating more coconut oil????!?!? Sad.

All this man says is we shouldn’t eat salmon because it has fat. Of course it has fat, and of course some of it has saturated fat because it’s a fish. I have learned nothing from his statement. Do you have something NEW to say, Dr. Bernard?

Dr. Bernard is simply against fats. Our brains are made of fat—we need to have it. People on low-fat diets have a higher rate of hostility because of it. We also need saturated fat—the problem is that modern people have overdone it. The one saturated fat that is actually healthy for you is medium chain sat fat—found in coconut oil, which is the only oil safe to fry at high heat, btw.

But some salmon—namely WILD salmon (not farm raised) *is good for you*. Is is natural to take a vitamin B12 supplement and a D3 pill? I suppose all of our healthy ancestors had access to the Vitamin Shop. While in a society that is very far away from the organic foods and the nutrient rich soils in which they grow people end up having to supplement. But if we truly go for a pure diet that has everything we need, for the B12, the D3, and even adequate amounts of tryptophan (natural mood stabilizer)as well as a few other things, there is some animal-based foods you’re going to have to have. If you want to eat completely vegan and take pills to supplement what your body can no longer get from nature, fine—but don’t lie and call it natural. Wild salmon is good for you. FAT is good for you. The point this doctor misses is that several of the things he opposes is good for people *in moderation*. I like most of his advice, but I don’t completely agree with him on fat and salmon—because this is his bag and he’s gone extremist in that area.

The problem with meat and fat, like sugar, most people have overdone them. The key here is *moderation*—we used to do that and people lived very well.

Bernard also supports the use of soybeans—soy harms the joints. It is not something we should be eating. There are lots of reason why we shouldn’t eat it—do your own research. Soy makes me feel bad. I use almond milk instead. I feel like an old lady when I use soy. This man gives bad advice on that.

Point is, he has a lot of good information, *but don’t be a lemming*—do your own research and compare with other researchers. Most of all, pay attention to your own body—you are your own greatest source. So take responsibility and think for yourself.

One important note—some day all vegetarians will also die, too. Including me.

BuzzKill
It is an appropriet name for someone so vandictive as you.
Aside from that, you need to educate yourself on the subject before you lash out on someone with your venom.
The facts speak for them self. An intelligent, open-minded person will ferrit out all information available to anyone. For instance, have you by any chance read the “China Study”??? by T.Colin Campbell,PhD., to get you started in opening your mind and widening your limited outlook.

It says a lot when the opponents of Dr. Barnard only mention his associations and credentials and do not argue at all with the content of what he says.

Buzz Kill et al. have it all wrong; it’s the meat and dairy industries that have been duping the American people into believing their products are necessary for good health. The published medical journals and various epidemiological studies have supported what Dr. Bernard is saying for many years now; he’s just trying to get the word out. I am proof that a vegetarian diet is healthiest- I lost 45 lbs and never get sick anymore.

“The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. PCRM is a fanatical animal rights group that seeks to remove eggs, milk, meat, and seafood from the American diet, and to eliminate the use of animals in scientific research. Despite its operational and financial ties to other animal activist groups and its close relationship with violent zealots, PCRM has successfully duped the media and much of the general public into believing that its pronouncements about the superiority of vegetarian-only diets represent the opinion of the medical community.
“Less than 5 percent of PCRM’s members are physicians,” Newsweek wrote in February 2004. The respected news magazine continued:

[PCRM president Neal] Barnard has co-signed letters, on PCRM letterhead, with the leader of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, an animal-rights group the Department of Justice calls a “domestic terrorist threat.” PCRM also has ties to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. An agency called the Foundation to Support Animal Protection has distributed money from PETA to PCRM in the past and, until very recently, did both groups’ books. Barnard and PETA head Ingrid Newkirk are both on the foundation’s board.
New York Times columnist Joe Sharkey put it more crisply in a November 2004 piece about PCRM’s annual airport-food ratings. “The physicians’ committee has a PETA link,” he wrote, “and its food rankings reflect that agenda.”

While PCRM presents itself as a doctor-supported, unbiased source of health guidance, the group’s own literature echoes Newsweek’s observation that 95 percent of its members have no medical degrees. And even the five-percent doctor membership that PCRM claims is open to question. Anyone claiming to be a physician or a medical student can join without paying a dime — even if their only motivation is to collect free waiting-room reading material.

PETA peddles its “animal liberation” food agenda through a medical front group that pretends to offer objective nutritional advice.
A group misleadingly named the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has duped the press into believing that it is an association of conscientious doctors promoting good nutrition. In fact, it is a PETA front group. PCRM and PETA share money, offices, and staff. The American Medical Association calls PCRM a “pseudo-physicians group,” has demanded that PCRM stop its “inappropriate and unethical tactics used to manipulate public opinion,” and argues that PCRM has been “blatantly misleading Americans” and “concealing its true purpose as an animal ‘rights’ organization.”

Taking a page out of PETA’s press book, PCRM has labeled U.S. school lunches “weapons of mass destruction” because they include meat and milk. PCRM’s president, a psychiatrist named Neal Barnard, recently duped Newsweek into covering his “study” (of seven people) supposedly demonstrating that a vegan diet helped prevent type-2 diabetes. In 2002, PCRM was cited in major newspapers more than 550 times. It was identified as an animal-rights organization in only a handful of those cases.

I am so glad Dr Neal confirmed that chicken is definitly bad for your health because everyone always thinks pork is the worst protein you can eat. I plan on trying the vegan diet….its worth it and doesn’t hurt the whole world to try.

Dr. Neal Barnard brings up some EXCELLENT points about what meat really does to your body. Maybe Extra cut off this part, but I’m pretty sure Dr. Barnard said that chicken are loaded with AMMONIA (it’s what s in glass cleaners!). Read Dr.Barnard’s book, it’s incredibly insightful and it also changed my life! Going veg has been the easiest thing to shedding my extra 30lbs.
