Oprah: Off the Diet Wagon

1209oprah.jpg

Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has struggled with her weight for years -- and she's making an emotional revelation today about her battle to keep the weight off.

"I can't believe I'm still talking about weight," Oprah says on her website. "I was really frustrated with myself that I am in this position again, so that's why I'm talking about it now."

Winfrey blames her two-year, 40-pound weight gain on a thyroid condition she says made her develop a fear of working out. Now, "Extra" is talking to Lady O's fitness guru Bob Greene -- who explains that Oprah going back to eating whatever she wanted is a trap that many Americans fall into. "She'll be the first to admit that she misuses food," Bob revealed. "That's the first step -- identifying where we misuse food, then we replace it with healthier habits."

Greene says that Oprah has already gotten back on track in hopes of shedding some of the weight. "She is really trying to find 60 minutes of cardio at least 5 days a week. That's been the challenge, but when she does that she's successful."

Let’s all just stop the cr*p about acai berries, special foods that “burn fat,” etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum! It is not easy, but let’s all try to deflect the fork or hand as it goes to the mouth. I’m a fine one to talk, but this is what I’m trying. Forget all the airbrushed magazine covers and talk about diet, diet, diet. And 60 minutes a day to exercise can be quite a chore to fit in. So park the car farther away, take the steps, don’t eat all the candy at one sitting … ENOUGH PEOPLE!!!

Hi,
I wish everyone struggling with weight all the luck in the world. Can anyone shed light on the “rumors” I hear about Oprah’s new diet? Acai Berry?

It’s great of Bob Greene to say that Oprah needs to “identify where she missuses foods and replace it with something healthier” when his advice prior to her regaining her weight was to try to control her vices via the age old diet adage of “moderation”.

IF we could eat the foods we love in moderation, we wouldn’t consume enough of them to gain 40 pounds, 80 pounds or 100+ excess pounds!

We aren’t obese because we aren’t living our best life, we are obese because we consume foods that we shouldn’t and do so on a regular basis and in large quantity.

Why does the diet industry have such a problem telling people that the simply CAN’T eat McDonalds, fried chicken, drink Coke etc.

Corporate sponsorship and greed might be one reason why the gurus don’t profess “Just say NO” when it comes to the junk foods peddled by these companies.

Bob Greene does Oprah and the rest of us a dis-service to have his image on Happy Meal boxes put push pedometers, tell us that cereal is an acceptable breakfast, etc and then expect us NOT to regain weight!!!

Dr. David Katz, who writes for O magazine said this in the foreword of The Vice Busting Diet:

By addressing diet vices, Julia is emphasizing the ‘negatives’ in your diet, so she can help you emphasize the positive potential in your life! Focus on fixing what’s wrong with your diet- and just on fixing what’s wrong- and you wind up with a way of eating you can actually live with.

This is in marked contrast to the myriad fad diets that reconstruct your eating pattern from cabbage soup to nuts, based on unsustainable exclusions, cockamamie theories, and/or cumbersome food combination schemes.

Julia correctly identifies leading contributors to the epidemic of obesity- and your personal weight control difficulties. She very insightfully inventories the leading “diet vices” in our culture. Her words ring true to me, based on my nearly 20 years of counseling patients. These very habits have indeed often been a cause, or even the cause, of weight gain, and failed attempts at lasting weight loss, among my patients. Julia gets it.

And gives just as good as she gets. I like the emphasis on health, first and foremost. I like the focus on simple, unintimidating steps. I like the inclusion of family, the consideration of mental as well as physical well-being. I really like “The Vice Busting Diet”!

Drawing on her own, rich experience, Julia provides simple and compelling wisdom. She notes, for example:

Deprivation is not living without certain foods, but living with them and being deprived of your true health and happiness!
____

Perhaps Oprah should take her doctor’s advice this time and read The Vice Busting Diet!

some people have high metabolisms and some have low metabolisms. i think that’s why some people have weight problems. takes 3500 calories to lose 1 pound and it takes 3500 calories to gain 1 pound. We don’t walk in overweights people’s shoes and we shouldn’t condemn them. they need a lot of love and encouragment. from a skinny person

I’m disappointed in Oprah for making such a big deal over this. What about loving yourself no matter what? Yes, you want to get and stay healthy but the shame associated with women and their weight just causes more eating disorders. Talk about getting healthy, not about how much you weigh. You know better.

Food just tastes sooo good. I agree with Oprah though, I exercise and diet, but I don’t lose weight, I think I have a thyroid condition, because of my sensitivity to cold weather, and other problems. I will keep trying.

Falling off the food wagon isn’t a healthy thing to do but it isn’t criminal. Take care of yourself and get busy again trying to shed the extra you have picked up and you will be successful.

I know how Oprah feels I am in the same
boat. I spent Nov 2006 until January
2008 loseing 50lbs. My trainer used me
in various ads around town and I have
started gaining my weight back as well.
I have went from 220 lbs to 162 lbs and now I’m at 185lbs. I as well use food as comfort and have never learned how to
eat right especially during the hard times.
