Joaquin Phoenix: Leaving the Silver Screen?

1028phoenix.jpg

"Extra" caught up with actor Joaquin Phoenix, and the "Walk the Line" star dropped a shocker --  is he really leaving show biz?!

Yes! Last night at the Paul Newman benefit, the Oscar nominee told "Extra," "I want to take this opportunity... also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor... I'm not doing films anymore."

"Extra's" Jerry Penacoli, shocked by the news, further probed Joaquin. "Are you serious?" Phoenix, who was curiously being followed by his own camera crews, reiterated, "Yeah. I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."

Actor Casey Affleck, present during the admission, tells "Extra", "I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff."

Today, "Extra" contacted Phoenix's rep for clarification and got this response: "That is what he told me."

NEXT: Britney to Rock the 'SNL' Stage?

The only really noteworthy performance he’s ever given was in Quills (and he was nowhere near the stellar brilliance of Geoffrey Rush in that film). As for his “singing” …. it’s laughable for him to think he actually has talent in that direction. His “singing” in Walk the Line was off-key and unlistenable.

Good riddance.

There is simply a birthmark on his mouth. The dude does not have a cleft palate or cleft lip. It’s a birthmark that’s all. He is otherwise way too perfect looking. Probably be too pretty without it! Joaquin is fine!

Joaquin you will be missed on the big sreen!! I guess I’ll have to buy your cd. I enjoyed all your movies. My favorites were Ladder 49 and Walk the Line. I was so stoked that you sang your own lyrics. Good luck to your future success.

Joaquin Phoenix is a GREAT actor. Or, he was, atleast. I’ll miss his acting. I wish he would stay an actor, but, hey, what can I do? Nothing… Singing…A very interesting career turn… I’ll keep a lookout for his songs.

Wow, what a turd. I’m so sick of these engrats! Making millions playing cowboys and indians isn’t enough. Now he has dillusions of rock star. What a whacko. He could barely sing in “walk the line” ruined the movie for me. Phoenix is no Cash for sure. Oh yeah he learned to play guitar on set. What a load this guy is. Yo, Phoenix if you want to retire just retire please don’t subject us to yet more crappy “i bought my record deal with fame”, actor turned musician garbage. Please just go away maybe back to a hippie commune where morons like you are bred. You are not a southern po’ boy gone off to the big city. You’re an over paid spoiled brat who has no concept of real life and what people have to go through. Used to dig your performances now you just make me mildy disgusted.

I saw the video, he seemed mad when the reporter laughed in disbelief and said “are you serious?” He seemed very upset.

He is a very talented actor. He was good in Walk the Line and Gladiator. I wish him luck in any venture he decides.

That said, he is a screwball for being a part of the fringe animal rights movement.

Joaquin just learned to play the guitar while filming Walk the Line. It will be a stretch for him to make money in music but he doesn’t need any. He is having fun so let him be. Besides his brother, he just lost a good friend in Heath Ledger and the beloved Phoenix family agent Iris Burton. I am sure River is so happy for his brother.

Wow, who even cares. The only good movies he was ever in were Parenthood with Steve Martin and Gladiator. Let him rot into obscurity

Joaquin is way to young an actor to retire! The caliber of his performances are nothing short of excellent. Hopefully he’ll return after this music faze is over.
