Simon Cowell has released a statement to "Extra" regarding the deaths of "American Idol" alum Jennifer Hudson's mother and brother.

"I was horrified when I heard the news," said Simon. "This is an appalling tragedy. My thoughts right now are with Jennifer and her family."

Hudson appeared on "American Idol" in 2002. She beat out season winner Fantasia Barrino for a role in "Dream Girls" -- which landed her an Oscar.

Jennifer’s nephew was also found dead. Jen needs all the love and support she can get right now from everyone. It’s great her American Idol judges and alumni are reaching out to her.

Anyone who does not feel bad would be totally heartless. I love Simon. He is honest to a fault and there are not a lot of folks out there like that.

I knew Simon would feel for the Hudson family. He has a reputation for being a bad guy, but underneath it all, he has a heart of gold.
