Letterman Blasts McCain's Bail-Out

0925letterman.jpg

David Letterman let loose on John McCain after he suspended his campaign -- and pulled out of a scheduled appearance on "The Late Show!"

"This just doesn't smell right," Letterman declared. "Somebody's putting something in his Metamucil... I have nothing but the highest regard for this man, but when you call up at the last minute and you cancel a show... that makes me think, well, maybe there'll be other things down the road if he's in the White House... he might just suspend being president!"

The comic riffed about the cancellation, saying, "John McCain had to cancel an appearance on the show because he is suspending his campaign because the economy is exploding." He also took a light jab, saying, "You know John McCain, the running mate of Sarah Palin?"

Then, Dave got miffed after hearing McCain bailed on him to sit down with CBS anchor Katie Couric. The funnyman then cut to live video of Couric's interview with McCain, and said, "Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?"

Today, GOP camp spokeswoman Nicole Wallace stated on NBC's "Today Show" that the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy." She added, "We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis."

McCain says he bailed on Letterman to tend to the country's economic crisis -- leaving Dave with a crisis of his own. Do you think the Senator, a 12-time visitor to the show, should return?

I think that Letterman is being a big baby! Senator McCain has better things to do than play patsy to an over-the-hill TV has-been! Should the Senator return to Letterman’s show? NOT IF HIS LIFE DEPENDED UPON IT!!!

Alan J Beam, Anonymous(9/25, 11:14), and Pixiechic: Since it seems that you dislike ‘lies’ so much, and are so concerned w/ one person’s feelings, I’m assuming you’re all not voting. Because I KNOW you wouldn’t be voting for b.o., if you don’t like lies. He’s got some REAL lies that are going to hurt more than the feelings of David Letterman, as well as(more importantly, btw)the people of the USA.Talk show cancellations bother you; throwing away every good thing in this country w/ a deceptive and dangerous agenda, bothers me!

in regards to your trying to make something out of Sen.Mcains not appearing on Lettermans show. This was done as there were more important issues at stake,I doubt that he is worried about what brain-dead talk show hosts would have to say.It should be noticed that instead of trying to entertain the lat night masses,he was more concerned about the country.

glad to see that McSame made it back to DC on his white horse to save the country from financial collapse. What are we suppose to be STUPID…no that title goes to your running mate McSame.

All you haters need to take a big dose of “open your eyes”.

I agree with most of these comments on here..David lettermen is acting like he missed his nap or something!!or perhaps like my 3 yr old son, when he’s having a tantrum.. Please give me a freggin’ break.. David Lettermen acts like he’s the one doing the debates, And john Mccain has to answer to him or something.. There are more serious things going on around us other than, David Letterman having the highest ratings at night for late night talk show’s, cause John Mccain was to be on the show.. Now would David Letterman done this to Obama, or someone eles.. My guess, would be probley not..grow up Dave!!

why would Dave even want to have him back on? Screw that! If you have an appointment with someone you keep it! If you want or need to cancel… tell the person the real reason why. Don’t lie! If he “felt that he had to address the current issue” or whatever… explain it to Dave and maybe reschedule. If he can’t even keep a simple date or tell the truth to David Letterman then what do think will happen if he became president? He’s a bastard and I hope he loses.

TOO BAD…all McCain needed to do was tell the truth…and tell Dave straight up that he’s sorry he won’t appear on his show..the truth will always come out…..if he can’t be truthful with this simple thing…what about running your country? Is he going to make up excuses? C’mon…why is Dave taking the blame?..It’s just like meeting a friend for dinner, cancels at the last minute when reservations have been made…just to be informed that your friend is having dinner with someone else in the next restaurant!!! How would you feel?

Hey Dave!
Keep your political rantings to yourself. It is not becoming and you sounded like an idiot. All people in the media field should just keep their politics to themselves, we would all have a lot more respect for you.

As Usual everyone is missing the point. First, McCain out right lied when he said he couldn’t do the show because he was getting on a plane. The fact is he was sitting in a chair waiting to be interviewed by Katie Curic . If he had just told the truth it probable wouldn’t have been so bad. Second, and Dave is right about this, if McCain will run away from his campaign so easily what’s to stop him from running away again. Finally, Dave has pointed out something that a lot of people who know John McCain have been saying for a while now. “This is not the John McCain that we know and respect!

David Letterman “used to be” funny! Now he is just a pathetic, desperate old man with a left-wing agenda! For the past couple years David Letterman has regularly SUSPENDED his comedy to get all preachy about leftist & democratic propoganda! I’ve watched David for 20+ years —- no more! Rename the show: the David Democrat Show to bash Republicans —- at least that would be honest; right now, David Letterman has sunk lower than a lying, dishonest used car salesman, and he’s not even funny anymore! David, IF you really want to be a political pundit, give up the show and see how well you do on one of the democrat channels like MSNBC… you and Oberman are 2 peas in a democratic pod … and you both stink! Otherwise, take a breather, and focus on comedy without the political ramblings of an amature pundit —- it ain’t working for ya! —Mike in FL

Wow, interesting comments…. the man didn’t cancel because of the Wall Street crisis… he cancelled when his polls dipped. If it had been really been the crisis, he would have rushed back when it happened, not days later. Plus he flat out LIED yet again when he said he had to rush back to DC… he didn’t leave until the next morning, but he found time to talk on another show… wonder who she bumped off to get him on there… or was he on there to try to repair the damage that Palin did the night before…

McCain has shown yet again, that he has no problem lying.

Teacher Judi Lemons - it’s, “Fool me once, shame on ME, fool me twice, shame on YOU”. As for the rest of whatever it was you were trying to express - try bottled water.

Trust me, this has no bearing on why McCain wasn’t on letterman, but, does anyone recall what happens when a republican is on one of these shows? It’s open season, sabotage, ambush, whatever you wanna call it. When a dem is on, the hosts are positively obsequious - it’s disgusting how they are fawned over, and how not one word out of the way is allowed. hilary even had a checklist of taboo subjects.Believe it or not, Leno does it the least. He may be dem or lib, but keeps his tone fair and remains unbiased. He respects the guest, regardless of their leanings. I’ve got to give him credit for that. A good host will keep his opinions to himself, and just do the interview.Letterman, like the other irrelevant bigmouths, just needs constant attention and validation for his pathetic opinions. The View is even worse

Dave - your comments are offensive to any one over 60, LIKE YOU. The “metemucil” comment rolled off your tongue… you probably have the daily dose memorized - NOT everyone over 60 uses it.

Anyway, being rude and angry is just NOT funny - you NEVER look happy, which seems to match your humor -

We get it, you “like” Obama, but does it mean you have to insult 50 percent of the country that isn’t gonna vote for him?

You like Obama need to realize your personal attacks offend quite a few of us.

I don’t know who the hell David L thinks he is for disrespecting John McCain for cancelling his appearance on his show to attend to the most important thing in this country at that moment. I used to like him but not anymore and will not watch his show. Anybody can be a president in this country, after listening to how easy everything can be done by Obama. I for one do like an experienced person like John McCain.

Dave,
As an American Government teacher for 26 years in Palos Verdes, CA…………I beg you…..please, please do us all a favor……….Do NOT invite McCain and his American Idol make-up artist back! It’s all just TOO thick for those of us Americans who see through him, his 2inch of foundation, his partner Sarah with her extensive Russian experience(listen to her interview with Katie Couric.. OMG !
I am a devotee of the real David Letterman who is man enough to know when to say Fool Me Once Shame On YOU but Fool Me Twice Shame on ME! You’re not that desperate to look young compared to a 72 year old puppet.
