Couric's Courage

0904couric.jpg

CBS anchor Katie Couric is excited to participate in tomorrow's unprecedented "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon -- and she's sharing with "Extra" why the cause is so close to her heart.

Couric bravely details the loss of husband Jay Monahan to colon cancer. "For nine months when Jay was sick, I felt like my heart was in a vice every single day," said Katie. "Nothing really prepares you for a life-shattering diagnosis like that."

Katie also lost her sister, Virginia Senator Emily Couric, to pancreatic cancer three years after Jay's death. The compounded losses inspired her to get involved with raising awareness and funds for cancer research. "I'm not Mother Theresa or anything. I don't want to sound like that, but I tried to set a good example of taking a tragic situation and at least trying to help others."

Watch Katie continue her fight, when "Stand Up to Cancer" premieres tomorrow night on CBS, NBC and ABC.

I saw the special last night and I was impressed. I hope they make into an annual event until they can cure cancer forever.

THIS IS HER STRONGEST BOND WITH PEOPLE RIGHT NOW. RAISING MONEY FOR CURING CANCER AND EARLY DETECTION. ITS A WONDERFULL ENDEAVER AND I APPLAUDE HER FOR IT.

I would be more impressed if Ms Couric were to really report how the huge agriconglomorates poison this nation’s food supply which leads to most cancers, especially the one her husband had… Why not use this unprecedented forum to draw attention to a PREVENTION rather than a cure which benefits the other huge business in this nation, gigantic pharmaceutical companies who, surprise surprise, are probably in cahoots with the agriconglomorates in the first place… It is all about the bottom dollar. Support your neighbor the independent farmer. EAT ORGANIC LOCAL!!!!

Even though I don’t personally care for Katie Couric as I think she’s definitely full of herself, I do give her credit for all the work she has done in spreading awareness about colon cancer. I hope this event is very successful!

I applaud this endeavor. As I face major abdominal surgery and eviction (as on very reduced pay from work thus unable to pay bills). I will pray very hard this event is a GRANDEOUS success! Shirley-Colorado
