John Edwards Admits to Affair

0807edwards.jpg

He called the rumors "tabloid trash," but now John Edwards has admitted to having an extramarital affair. The former presidential candidate told ABC News today that he did have an affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter, but that the timing of the affair precludes him being the father of Francis Quinn, although he says he hasn't taken a paternity test -- and a former campaign claims to be the father.

In early 2007, Hunter told "Extra" she met the former Senator in a NYC bar and later produced a series of campaign Internet videos for him. While Hunter denied they were having an affair at the time, calling reports "completely unfounded and ridiculous," Edwards now admits that's when the affair began.

"I was around him a lot," she told "Extra" at the time. "We went to Africa. The whole experience was life altering for me."

Edwards said his family found out in 2006 -- but he swears his wife Elizabeth's cancer was in remission when he began his affair. Elizabeth has been diagnosed with an incurable form of breast cancer.

Edwards even acknowledges the National Enquirer's report that he visited Hunter in a Beverly Hills hotel last month. While he denies paying her hush money, he says it's possible some of his friends or supporters may have paid Hunter without his knowledge.

Late this afternoon, Edwards issued the following statement:

STATEMENT OF SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS

August 8, 2008

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.

It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.

NEXT: Shia's 911 Call

I think it is a rotten thing John has done to his wife and family. I do not condone what he has done, but I think it is terrible the way the press has dogged him and taken him and his family through hell. He is not the first one to ever make a mistake and won’t be the last. This is between him and his family not for the whole world to judge. He is the one who has to live with his lies and deception. This is his personal life and has nothing to do with politics. So let’s just drop it and move on. Yes he lied but who wouldn’t…..let’s face it most people would have done the same to save face for him and his family. I’m sure he is not proud of what he has done and is living is own personal hell. He is human and we all make mistakes. So again let’s give it a rest and let the man and his family get on with there life’s. Who are we to judge!

Where did the money come from that he’s been paying his lady-friend and also the two houses he bought for her and the “male friend” involved in this?? Are we, the tax payers footing this bill??(or is it coming out of his own bank account??) THAT’S the question that needs to be looked in to and answered!!!!!

He sold his soul to the devil. Now there is a hush money trail and a web of lies. He should bend over and kiss his !career! goodbye.

After the way he sat in judgement over Bill Clinton, he has some nerve!! He is a hippocrite to the fullest degree and self righteous to boot!! and what’s wierd, is that he keeps doing it to himself!! the fool won’t keep his mouth shut!;every time he grants an interview or statemnet, he digs himself in deeper! I feel badly for his dear wife..she’s too good for him..

Anyone who cheats is a sleaze, no matter what. That being said, why does he have to ‘admit’ anything to anyone, but his WIFE?? How is this anyone’s business whether or not he ‘fesses up? His wife knew two yrs. ago - let HER deal w/ it.

If squeaky clean John Edwards had not endorsed Obama, Hiliary Clinton, not only the most intelligent of the three, but the most experienced in politics would have won the Demo nominee. I believe the sympathy vote for poor John and his squeaky clean look helped win the Demo election for Obama. This will probably set our Demo party back and we will not win the election in November. And we all know the Democratic Party is the one to lead our nation at this very critical point in the history of, not just America, but our world. My heart goes out to Ms Edwards and the entire family, however, Many people have affairs and cheat on teir wives and husbands (no morals) and it seems to be only sensationalized when we are in the political world. Ms Edwards has enough to contend with now without the media being in her personal life. Shame, shame on John Edwards for causing this!

99% honest!!! Give me a break. What an arrogant idiot. We are not that stupid. Please. I do not think that his wife would agree with his “1%” trist. And for the “Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family,” I doubt that very much. “Oh, let me talk in detail how I cheated on you when you were undergoing chemo.” This guy has always been a fake. I am glad he has been exposed for the misogynistic, pathetic lier he always was.

I figured it was true when the scuddle butt first started circulating. A lot of men and women cheat in today’s society but when a spouse is suffering from an illness it just makes it soooo much worse. Shame on you John Edwards!
