Beijing's Olympic Village: The Winning Place to Stay

You've seen Michael Phelps swim, but where does he crash? Here's a behind-the-scenes look at Beijing's impressive, cutting-edge Olympic Village -- where the best come to stay and play.

The 164-acre eco-friendly Olympic Village is divided into three sections -- a residential, operational and international area. The residential section houses over 16,000 athletes, coaches and officials in 42 solar-powered apartment buildings. Twenty-four-hour shuttle buses run from the Village's operational area to nearby sporting venues like the Bird's Nest and aquatic Water Cube stadiums.

The Village's International area has a supermarket, post office, fire station, hair salons and internet cafes. There's also a florist, video arcades and five religious halls providing services in six languages. Chinese traditional arts are also on display and locally-made handicrafts for sale.

What's life like for the Village People? Here's the luxe low-down.

The Hospitality:
A staff of 4,000 to assist the village residents.

The Rooms:
Air-conditioned apartments that sleep three to six people.
Beds with 16" extensions and raised shower heads (for athletes like 6' 8" Brazilian jumper, Jadel Gregorio).

The Cuisine:
In a 24-hour period, the massive dining areas -- with 30 buffet tables -- feed more than 18,000 guests. Athletes eat free!
Most popular dishes are pizza and Peking duck. Six-hundred roast ducks and three tons of rice are consumed daily. If you have a Mac attack, there's a McDonald's in the Village.

Living Green:
To conserve water and energy, sheets are changed every four days; towels every two days.
510,000 new trees were planted in the Village; 200 tons of recycled water is used daily on landscape.
Tree-lined jogging tracks, swimming pool, tennis courts and state of art fitness center.

For Fun:
Alcohol-free disco.

For Learning:
Chinese lessons available in Chinese Learning Center.

For Help:

A medical clinic with 626 doctors and nurses -- and a doping control center.

The Olympic Village will close on August 27 and reopen three days later to host the Paralympics Games. After September 20, the 3,000+ Olympic Village accommodations will be converted into luxury apartments with prices ranging from $500K to $1 million -- now that's one expensive souvenir!
