Disney Tween Selena's Vow of Abstinence

Selena Gomez is the newest shining star of the Disney channel -- and she's telling "Extra" that she plans to avoid Hollywood's temptations -- and abstain from sex until she's married!

"I said, 'Dad, I want a promise ring.' He went to the church and got it blessed. He actually used me as an example for other kids. I'm going to keep my promise to myself, to my family and to God," said the 15-year-old "Wizards of Waverly Place" star.

Check out "Extra" for a behind-the-scenes peek at Gomez's cover shoot for Seventeen magazine.

Isn’t it sad that when a girl has what used to be common morality and decency, it’s a story?! Pitiful. We have lost our moral compass in this country and around the world. I wish all the 15-year-old girls in the world would make the same commitment. Such heartache could be avoided.

I DONT see why everybody is getting mad if a hollywood star does something wrong like jamie lynn spears and lindsey lohan. NO ONE IS PERFECT. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE FAMOUS DOESNT MEAN THEY HAVE TO BE PERFECT-JUST FOR YOU. STOP AND GET OFF THEIR BACKS. WHAT IF YOU WERE IN THEIR PLACE-WOULD YOU WANT PEOPLE TALKING BAD ABOUT YOU??? AND THOSE PICS THAT MILEY CYRUS TOOK ONLY SHOWED HER BACK-THAT’S IT!!! GOSH- IT’S NOT LIKE SHE SHOWED ANYTHING ELSE.

I disagree with Kendall. The girl’s only trying to explain why she does the things she does. And yes, I think people should wait before they do some things, and Jamie Lynn Spears may have made a mistake, but she’s going to marry the father and try to make a go of it. As long as they are together, I’m sure the CHILD, who is really the only person who could be injured, will be alright with their decision to have a baby… early. As for Miley Cyrus, her fans, who are my age (13) see no problem with what she did. All that was shown was a part of her back. She is allowed to do so. If she was wearing a backless dress, nobody would care. This is a specially designed, thick blanket. I see no problem with anything that these so-called “Hollywood wild child” icons.

i think it’s great that she’s not one of those hollywood stars that pretend to be role models for little kids and then go off and do something totally un role model like. Since she was friends with miley cyrus, i was worried she would go down that path, but she’s a true role model, a person like raven symone.

to Kendall:

She’s doing this so that way all of her fans will follow her example. If you want more teen pregnancy, go on saying what your saying, but otherwise shut up.

There are some real bitter people in this room. I applaud Selina for her choice. As for Miley, all I can say is that I wouldnt want my daughter posing for those kind of pictures. Having said that, they will not cause the end of the world and the whole thing was over blown.

She wants to make young girls aware that this is the path she has chosen, in hopes that they will follow. Otherwise, how would they know? Kudos to her!!!

I think it’s a great and mature choice for Selena to make. In my class seven girls had babies this year and four guys got their girlfriends from other school pregnant. I wear a purity ring also and have gotten some nasty comments and have been teased. Maybe things like this will help kids see that waiting isn’t stupid. It’s assuring a future for yourself.

No, I disagree with Kendall.

It is her personal choice! She wants to send a positive message out there for girls who look up to these teens they see on t.v. And those young girls are seeing pregnancy (JL Spears), nude photos (Hudgens) and racy photos (Cyrus).

She wants her fans to see that it is cool and okay to be “good”.

Kudos to her.

P.S. I am a fifteen year old girl and I am very proud of Selena.

I think it’s a mature thing that she is doing. I read the other comments and I have to say that I don’t think that Miley did anything wrong or to be ashamed about and there were many comments about the photos, I didn’t see anything wrong. But I have to ask, did everyone forget about Jamie Lynn Spears? She is on the Disney Channel in her own show that thousands of young girls watch everyday, and she was pregnant at 15 years old, did everyone forget about that? I don’t hear anything about that, I think that Zoey 101 should have been taken off the air. My daughter is 5 years old and asks to watch Zoey 101 and I won’t let her watch it.

I doubt that’s actually going to last very long. And I don’t understand the fuss with Miley Cyrus. So she took a photo shoot where she was wearing a sheet, she showed her back. It’s not like she is the new Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears. honestly…

See..
I don’t think Selena Gomez is as apt to destruction as Miley was/is.
Of course, there’s plenty of time for changing that. But I don’t think I ever liked Miley Cyrus as a person.

I don’t like Selena Gomez either, but I think she’s better, not so hypocritical. Quieter even..

However, I completely understand about the whole, making an official statement about it.
Why not just wear it and let people ask about it? ughmm. I dunno.
It is good that these rings are getting worn again, but bad that they’re getting such bad reps.

Yet another “Disney” victim declaring holier than thou statements. If that’s your personal choice, great! Do you have to announce it to the world? Why? If that’s your belief, than conduct it by the way you live. Why must you declare it for the world to hear? Publicity? Holier than thou? I’ve heard this statement many times before, and I realize that those who have made this kind of statement are only setting themselves up. For me, actions speak louder than words. Selena, you’re no better than the other girls who have made this statement. Also, there is no perfect person. People make mistakes, and it is from these mistakes that we learn and grow. So listen all you DISNEY kids - just live your life the way you claim you want to live it without making declarations to the press for all to hear! You’re only setting yourself up if you do! I’m really so annoyed by DISNEY. They may not think so, but I believe this is their way of exploiting the “stars” just so they can make $$$$$! Look how quickly Disney is jumping to their new “it” (or money making star) since Miley did the Vanity pose. I wonder what message Disney is sending by “dropping” Miley so they can cash in on a new girl who hasn’t posed yet!
