Mel is one friendly neighbor! Britney Spears, fresh from a media circus surrounding her most recent fender bender, hopped a plane after accepting an invite to Costa Rica from former neighbor Mel Gibson, reports People magazine.

The odd couple, first spotted together having dinner in Studio City back in March, is traveling with Brit's conservator Papa Spears and Mel's wife Robin to the Gibsons' hideaway, where they'll vacation until next week. "They're just going away for a few days to relax," says a source.

Gibson and Spears have reportedly had numerous meetings since Brit's involuntarily hospitalization in February, a different source tells People. "Mel and his wife Robin clearly saw a woman in crisis and wanted to extend themselves in any way possible," the source said.

The Gibsons, who used to live near Britney in Malibu, were reportedly concerned about the pop star after her very public downward spiral. "There are no expectations, there is no agenda," the source added. "It's simply an act of human kindness -- one neighbor reaching out to the other."
