Simon Cowell Skewers Katharine McPhee

Simon Cowell is known for skewering awful singers on "American Idol," but now he's turning on "Idol" sweetheart Katharine McPhee!

"Didn't care much about Katharine McPhee," Simon told "Extra." "I don't think she was a credible recording artist. Katharine will end up on Broadway!"

The King of Mean has come out swinging at some of "Idol's" biggest names, telling "Extra" that last year's champ Taylor Hicks didn't deserve to take the top spot.

"There's always a place for someone like that on the show - until they win," Simon insisted.

As for Clay Aiken, who's currently starring in "Spamalot" on Broadway, Simon seems rather satisfied that the season two runner-up ended up exactly where he predicted.

"[He is] very at home," Simon huffed.

As for rumors that the producers are planting "ringers" in this year's competition to make sure they get another chart-topper, Simon says no way.

"Oh, give me a break!" he said. "Regardless of whether or not you got a recording contract, they've all failed, which is why they turn up on 'American Idol.'"

Mr. Nasty is also taking on fellow judge Paula Abdul and her new single, "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow."

"Uh, I'm glad Paula's made a record," Simon admitted. But as for whether he'd give her a thumbs up if she were a contestant on "Idol," "Probably not."

But even the so-called "Sultan of Slams" wouldn't resist dishing out one more ticket to Hollywood for Paula.

"I think she should definitely perform it on the show," he said.

Now, with the Hollywood rounds starting, you tell "Extra": Who's your early favorite this season? Sound off here!

I have no particular like or dislike for Taylor, Katharine or Clay … however, I think Simon should think before he opens his mouth. If he thinks someone like Taylor shouldn’t have won, then he should have made certain that Taylor never got put through to the top 24. Simon has absolutely no one to blame but himself. He got exactly what he deserved for trying to use Taylor to get ratings. Blaming the American public for making a mistake in voting Taylor in as the Season 5 AI is definitely the pot calling the kettle black. Simon needs to get a grip.

Hes right about her talent. I cant stand her and never did like her voice. However, Broadway is incredibly difficult and requires more than just a good voice. I think what he meant was her voice is not “pop” its not what idol is about. Idol isnt about caberet or Broadway its about pop music and no she doesnt have that.

This guy is one of the biggest jerks on TV and he proves it over and over every time he opens his mouth. What exactly is his talent compared to those he continually disses? To have people on the show, making a fortune for him and the others and then to constantly criticize what they do during and after the show just shows a true person with major ego problems. He has always talked about Broadway like it was a huge putdown. Few people are really able to be great on Broadway, where it is ALL live. No re-takes, no shoot a scene and then learn and shoot the next, on and on. These people have to know the entire thing, from start to finish all the time. They perform 8 shows a week, with singing, dancing, acting, fast costume and even character changes. This takes skill - something Simon would never possess. As to his remark about Clay being where he should — funny that Simon projected something like the big bombastic Phantom (which I agree Clay could do very well), but instead Clay is doing Spamalot — the furthest thing from “typical Broadway” as you can get. So, no Simon, it’s not exactly as you predicted. It’s sheer comedy, with great timing, as well as the singing, dancing, and acting — and al libbing. It’s NOT something the average person can do and do well.

Just as Simon had no clue in the early seasons about country music, and bashed on Josh for it - he has NO clue what the country likes and appreciates. He still has a stick up his butt and has no appreciation for anyone. His remarks on Leno showed what a jerk he is, only ever thinking of himself and NOT wanting others to succeed. Bet it really irks him to see the ones he least wanted, like Clay, be so successful at singing, touring, doing concerts, being on TV, being a great humanitarian, and now wowing them on Broadway — in a show Simon would have NEVER in a million years dreamed of Clay being in.

I was never impressed with Kat McPhee’s singing voice although, her beauty was mesmerising. I remember telling my husband she should be in movies. So lovely. I do agree with Simon’s assessment and I also think that Clay on Broadway is a perfect match. I do not think that Simon was putting Broadway performances down, I believe he was comparing stage to recording and actuallly, I think he is right ! Clay was
my alltime favorite Idol, but his persona does not come across in a recording—Broadway—Wow, that’s the ticket and Clay knows it.

Kat McPhee has got an excellent singing voice. She is on a higher level than many recording artist out there. Simon shoots from the hip when prior contestants do well and don’t pay him enough homage.I guess her upcoming movie and popularity doesn’t count to him. AND WHATS WITH HIM ROLLING HIS SHORT SLEEVE SHIRTS UP, that went out in the seventies. Not to mention he’s got no biceps to speak of. Oh-oh, mommy’s gonna be mad now ……. cause he is a momma’s boy, thats obvious.

Last year around this time Simon said “I like Katharine, she gets it, she hasn’t changed.” This year he doesn’t care. If you don’t care, why bring her up at all?
She did not win, she is not connected to any Idol Company anymore…BINGO..
I smell FEAR in the little british man!
Go Get em’ Kat!
FYI Simon..Broadway gets way better talent than your end of the run show!

Does slimon even know what kind of talent it takes to apear on Broadway? I highly doubt it. He thought Ruben Studdard should win American Idol and had a GREAT recording voice and said so. Look where he ended up.He doesn’t even have a recording contract now, but Clay does.America made it’s choice and no matter how many times slimon slams Clay Aiken on AI America KNOWS AI rigged the votes and THEY GOT IT RIGHT!
ROCK ON CLAY!!!!!!

One thing Simon did get right though.
He predicted that Carrie Underwood will win the season 4. Look where she is now. She’s the hottest superstar that wins CMA, ACM, AMA, Billboard awards and Grammys.

Simon needs to shut up. I imagine that Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe are thrilled to death that he’s dissing the product they turn out. If I were them, Simon would no longer have a job on the show. Let him go back to his immortal discovery Westlife.

stacia That really isn’t all true. Especially for the first cd. Anyway I am sure their are fans who buy multiple cds as there are in all fan bases. Anyway I only bought one.

Clay’s sales were only as high as they were because his fans bought and still buy multiple copies to pad the numbers. His numbers are ALL artificially inflated and the industry knows that. Simon is right on about Clay, always has been.

Simon’s girlfriend, the gal that works for extra, her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Raspy can be sexy, but with her it’s just awful!

I hope Kat does do Broadway. Broadway is much harder than being a pop star.
If any idol he disses ends up selling a lot of cd all of sudden he will change his opinion in a heart beat.
He didn’t think Jen Hudson would make it and look at her.

Every time Simon disses a former contestant who has had some success he shows what a little person he is. The show’s credibility keeps going down with every diss—he’s just showing that the show doesn’t make stars as it claims. Maybe he should promote the contestants who are recording and trying to become successful instead of dissing them—it would give the show and him more credibility.

Kayla-Clay’s first cd sold 613,000 the FIRST WEEK (no other Idol contestant and very few other recording artists have achieved that distinction) - it has gone on to sell more than 2,000,000!!!! And I still don’t believe ATDW sold just 211,000 the first week!!! His next CD is going to be fantastic!! Can’t wait til May!!

UH…Simon, getting a part on Broadway-especially a STARRING ROLE (Clay as Sir Robin in SPAMALOT) is a GOOD THING. Most serious performers would give their eye-teeth to get a part on Broadway. You just are very ignorant about the ways of stage productions. So just open your mouth about what you do know and keep it shut about things you don’t know. BRAVO, Clay-you’re phenomenal as Sir Robin (and the other two parts you perform to perfection)-Mike Nichols must of kissed the ground the day you agreed to take on the role(s). As for the poster here who said Paula is the ONLY one associated with AI with an ‘IT’ factor??? Give me a break-Clay has proven that he is what the producers of Idol were looking for when the show was conceived. He has it all- talent, wit, smarts, great stage presence, humanitarian persona, etc. No one else from that show has done all that Clay has.

Speaking of voice, does Simon know how terrible his gf’s voice is? I cannot stand her voice!! I am sure she is a nice person, but please, there are many pretty ladies who can do her job, please get someone who has a nicer (normal) voice to interview people. I always grab the tv remote when his gf is on tv…. her voice kills me.
