Last night, "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell stood his ground like never before, as the panel argued back and forth about who should stay and who should go.
Now Simon is speaking out, telling "Extra" that the battle lines are drawn.
"This year there was definitely two judging panels," Simon said. "There was me, always right, and there was Randy and Paula. They're like Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum!"
So why is Simon so passionate this year? He says it all goes back to Taylor Hicks.
"The trouble is when you put someone like that in the show because they're very popular it becomes a popularity competition and not a talent competition," Simon blasts. "I think once again history will prove that I was right."
So who are this year's favorites?
There's David, the 16-year-old who was able to move a backup singer to tears. Then there's Syesha, who was able to deliver a stellar performance of "Chain of Fools" despite a mean case of laryngitis.
And after the show was criticized for last year's crop of talent, "Idol" champ and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood told "Extra" just wait!
"It's not on a decline," she insists. "I don't at all! [They are] just finding their groove for the year."

If Taylor Hicks was so popular with the audience that voted for him that season why did his album falter in sales? Lets get realistic here All Simon is trying to convey is the American Idol has to be the entire package. Yes Taylor was a great singer but so were soo many other idol contestants that were voted off. To be the top you have to be marketable and I am sorry but he is just not marketable as shown through his record sales. The reason Kelly Clarkson, Chris and Carrie have done so well is because not only are they talented individuals but they have a certain polish and presence about them that others lack. I completely agree with Simon if you focus soley on the voice then we would have hundreds of great idols instead you focus on the voice, the charisma, and the presence aka the entire package…Can they deliver sales, attract a wide audience and stay memorable? Artists who have stayed successful for so long know the importance of maintaining the entire package:) Personally I believe people attack Simon because they can’t handle the truth. Paula and Randy tend to sugar coat it where as Simon tells it like it is and that is real show business! Try and look at his perspective before closing your mind to a different opinion.
