Battle Of the 'Idol' Judges

Last night, "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell stood his ground like never before, as the panel argued back and forth about who should stay and who should go.

Now Simon is speaking out, telling "Extra" that the battle lines are drawn.

"This year there was definitely two judging panels," Simon said. "There was me, always right, and there was Randy and Paula. They're like Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum!"

So why is Simon so passionate this year? He says it all goes back to Taylor Hicks.

"The trouble is when you put someone like that in the show because they're very popular it becomes a popularity competition and not a talent competition," Simon blasts. "I think once again history will prove that I was right."

So who are this year's favorites?

There's David, the 16-year-old who was able to move a backup singer to tears. Then there's Syesha, who was able to deliver a stellar performance of "Chain of Fools" despite a mean case of laryngitis.

And after the show was criticized for last year's crop of talent, "Idol" champ and Grammy winner Carrie Underwood told "Extra" just wait!

"It's not on a decline," she insists. "I don't at all! [They are] just finding their groove for the year."

If Taylor Hicks was so popular with the audience that voted for him that season why did his album falter in sales? Lets get realistic here All Simon is trying to convey is the American Idol has to be the entire package. Yes Taylor was a great singer but so were soo many other idol contestants that were voted off. To be the top you have to be marketable and I am sorry but he is just not marketable as shown through his record sales. The reason Kelly Clarkson, Chris and Carrie have done so well is because not only are they talented individuals but they have a certain polish and presence about them that others lack. I completely agree with Simon if you focus soley on the voice then we would have hundreds of great idols instead you focus on the voice, the charisma, and the presence aka the entire package…Can they deliver sales, attract a wide audience and stay memorable? Artists who have stayed successful for so long know the importance of maintaining the entire package:) Personally I believe people attack Simon because they can’t handle the truth. Paula and Randy tend to sugar coat it where as Simon tells it like it is and that is real show business! Try and look at his perspective before closing your mind to a different opinion.

Simon, you are NOT always right. in fact, you are WRONG more than you are right!!! can i say kelly clarkson and chris daughtry!! honestly, i am soo glad paula and randy overruled simon a lot this year, especially with Kyle, who would just have become the new sanjaya, a joke who steals the attention from the good singers. Paula and randy have a much better track record than simon. it annoys me he still goes around saying hes right all the time, when all the evidence says he is Not always right!!

What is with his “I’m always right” attitude? Is he for real??? Just because Taylor’s not mainstream hardly means he’s not a credible singer. He keeps saying it’s a singing competition (and it is) yet during this year’s Hollywood rounds, he prefers to put through Kyle because he’s “unique and different” overlooking the fact that there are others more qualified. I’m sure if that kid sang on the live shows, Simon would be the first judge to start kicking him to the curb. Then there’s David Hernandez, obviously talented, who he says no to. I’m just glad “Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum” were there because I dread to think what the line up would be had he been the one to choose the top 24.

Simon’s real problem is that Taylor Hicks was smart enough to be able to keep Simon, Nigel and their 19 mamagement out of his wallet. Its all sour grapes because Simon and friends aren’t making any money off of Taylor.
And logic should tell anyone with even half a brain that popularity is always a major part of AI. NO ONE takes the time to vote for someone they don’t like, no matter how talented they may be.
Taylor beat you guys and won even though you didn’t want him to…so get over it Simon!

I love Simon to tears, but I do have to disagree with him on Taylor Hicks. Taylor is a mountain of talent; not just a great entertainer, but an amazing vocalist as well. America definitely made the right choice when they crowned him Season 5’s American Idol. I hope whoever takes this season’s crown is just as exciting.

Simon is a joke. Taylor Hicks has the whole package. It takes more than just singing. You have to entertain also. I have listened to a lot of great singer and have been very bored with the preformance. Taylor Hicks is the best live preformer I have seen in a long time. He is a person who can take a song and make it his own. I think Simon could take a few lessons from Hicks in the personality department.

Does Simon really think Taylor would have made it on popularity alone. What a stupid thing to say. I tuned in every week because I wanted to see his performance, hear that great voice, not just because I liked him. I liked him because he was good. I liked Kevin too, but I couldn’t vote for him ahead of someone like Taylor. That might be one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard.

Simon is like a child. He thinks he is always RIGHT and the only one who is right. And if you don’t agree with him he will have a tantrum.”It becomes a popularity contest” DUH! Simon your not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? Why would people vote for someone they didn’t like. Like = popular. It is all about popularity with the talent to back it up. Sometimes when Simon speaks it makes you cringe at his lack of intelligence. He double talks a trait for people who have nothing intelligent to say.

What Simon failed to realize that Taylor Hicks rolled over everyone in the talent department in Season 5 - in fact, I’d go so far as to say that Taylor has more performing and vocal talent than any other contestant ever on that show. The thing is, he refused to be a pawn, a puppet to their machine and thus, is taking war bath from them in the media.
