‘Idol’ Recap: Yup, The ‘70s Were Awful

The leading “Idol” ladies took the stage yesterday for an evening of ‘70s tunes, proving yet again that it’s a decade nearly worth forgetting. The judges were not impressed -- telling most of the girls they disagreed with their song choice – which seemed to be the evening’s theme.

Simon repeatedly said, “It was a silly choice in my opinion,” despite his belief that the girls are a vocally talented bunch. Tatted rocker Carly Smithson opened the show by singing Heart’s “Crazy on You,” but no one was particularly crazy about it. The judges had similar things to say about hula dancer Ramiele Malubay, Syesha Mercado and rocker Amanda Overmeyer -- whose hair best exemplified the horror of the 1970s.

Simon told “Extra” that Alaina Whitaker would be the “dark horse” in the competition, and echoed that opinion after her performance of “Hopelessly Devoted.” At one point, the interviews were more interesting than the vocals.

Simon sat down with “Extra’s” own (and Simon’s own) Terri Seymour to talk about last night’s show, where they agreed that toothsome Brooke White rocked the house with a sultry rendition of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.” Simon’s only fear about the angelic singer? “I think she’s going to get annoying.”

Leave your comment! Tell "Extra" which four contestants should be sent packing on tonight's results show!

Wow, all I have to say is Amanda really lucked out. There must have been a lot of tone deaf people listening to that performance last night. I really like her raspy voice but based on last night, she should have been eliminated.

Brooke White is a BREATH of fresh air. I loved her performance, and I love her look of innocence. She can sing anything. Hide and watch SIMON. She is not going to get boring because she is Bright and Sunny. That girl is a star in the making…….Our young people need Better role models and she is a perfect role model. Look at the success of Hannah Montanna!!!!Disney Corp crys every pay day. GO BROOKE We` do not need any more Amy Whinehouses drunk and drugged singing to our kids!!!!

Danny Noriega could also get the boot, but with his popularity on VFTW he may stick around…

I’m glad I’m not the only one that finds Danny extremely annoying. Let’s hope he’s not this year’s Sanjaya.

Danny has to go he is such an a$$ and he thinks he’s cute, but really he’s just annoying. Jason Yeager belongs on Broadway not on American Idol. He can sing but he sings like he belongs in a musical.
Most of the girls seemed to pick the wrong songs and so they sounded crappy. I would have to pick Alexandria Lushington to go because she has just not performed very well, and Alaina Whitaker. She just doesn’t seem to have it yet, but she’s young so maybe she’ll be back.

For the girls, this is hard, Syesha’s voice cracking and somewhat out of tune, it was the first week I am not sure who is goin home. They were all pretty dang good, but 2 have to leave.

I love Brooke, and I don’t think she’ll ever get annoying!! She had the performance of the night last night. I have always wanted someone on Idol to sing that song and direct it at Simon. It’s his theme song!! If Brooke continues to turn in stellar performances, listen to the judges, and stay as sweet as she is, she has a great shot at winning it all.

Going home this week: Guys - Jason Y. and Luke. Girls - Kady and Alaina. Danny is also on the bubble, and I don’t know how much longer Syesha and Asia’h are going to last. Syesha makes terrible song choices, and Asia’h demonstrated, as Simon pointed out, that she’s not a good enough singer to pull off that song. It was also a major cop out to pick a ’70s song that Celine remade in the ’90s and do it with Celine’s exact arrangement. This was an opportunity to discover the music of an amazing decade, and she missed that boat.
