David the Goliath in This Week's 'Idol'

Last night's "American Idol" saw the emergence of what Paula Abdul called a superstar - 17-year-old David Archuleta - whose version of John Lennon's classic, "Imagine," absolutely wowed judges and viewers.

While several performances were outstanding, David Archuleta undoubtedly stole the show - with a weepy Paula saying, "It was one of the most moving performances I've ever seen." Luke Menard's lukewarm version of "Killer Queen" did not kill. Danny Noriega failed to outsing his manbob.

Expectations were high for the other "Idol" wannabes, including dreadlocked Jason Castro, who again played guitar. David Hernandez gave a rollicking version of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," with Simon telling Hernandez, "That was the best vocal of the evening." Then Archuleta performed and Simon declared, "You're the one to beat."

i don’t know if anyone will agree, but i remember back to season 2 about another incredible voice by the name of clay aiken. he also was very humble and such a pure voice. david a is just as incredible.

David Archuleta was the ONLY singer on American Idol whose vocal and visual performance actually gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes (tears because my heart and soul were touched)…this response was much like my initial response to the YouTube video of Paul Potts—absolute visceral response to outstanding talent!!! BRAVO!!!

It does not matter that David won Star Searh, it just goes to show he has dedication to what he loves. Smart beyond his years, he knows control and is humble….which is appealing

Obviously, some of you were not watching the same show I was, To say David is not a good singer shows how little u know about music. His charisma is the best anyone on the show has ever had, And big deal if he was on Star Search, Daughtry was in a band, melinda sang backups for gospels singers and Taylor was already in a band, There is no stipulation about what you have done or doing. So give that one a rest and free your minds. If you don’t like him then so, but don’t try to destroy him with dill bulls@#$.

Mark my words, David WILL WIN AMERICAN IDOL! He has the WHOLE package! Voice, Personality, looks. He is adorable!!! GO DAVID!!!!!! This is your time!!

I do not like david. His voice is very airy and he has no originality. Also,I do not belive that he should be on the show, because he alresdy won Star Search when he was 12. Let someone else win a singing contest for a change!

I think that David is the best and one to beat…when he was 12 he also had some type of album thingy…(not sure what it was) but anyway i knew from his aution when he sang waiting on the world to change…he is awsome and will win!!!!!!

I think David is WAY overrated. He sounds hoarse when he sings and he is always GASPing for air. Hardly the best.

David is unbelievable!!! He definitely is the one to beat.

Is this story a real Simon interview or another false alarm? The preview made it sound like Simon is going to talk to Extra about the contestants, but the link to this article indicates that it referred only to Simon’s comments on Idol. Give Simon more time!!! Get him in the studio for an interview, like you used to. I want more SIMON on Extra!!!

i kind of thought paula stole the show (again).. with her comments on david’s performance. I remember her comments more than his performance actually. hehe. but he is adorable. this season is great.
