Jessica Simpson Goes Country

Her latest movie, "Blonde Ambition," has gone straight to DVD, but Jessica Simpson has more big projects lined up: She's trying for a career in country music.

The pop diva tells Billboard.com, "I am a country girl. I grew up in Texas, and country music was what I listened to."

She adds, "I always wanted to make a country album, but I wanted to wait until the time was right."

Citing Faith Hill, Reba McEntire and Shania Twain as inspirations, she says, "I think there is a strength in female country artists."

The album is due later this year, but she's not sure if she'll tour.

"Since the record is in the beginning stages, there hasn't been much talk about a tour just yet," she says.

The only reason why she still isn’t doing pop is because her younger sister out beat her BADLY.

I hope a move to country will allow Jessica to once again demonstrate what an amazing singer she is. Not only did her last pop projects spotlight rhythm and effects more than vocals, ever since Jess got saddled with the “ditzy blonde” label based on a few unflattering moments on Newlyweds, she has dumbed down her singing, most likely at the request of a record producer. She was probably told that if she shows how talented she is, everyone might have to start taking her seriously, so she deliberately sang in a soft, flat, breathy voice. Even on the stunning “Angels”, her voice soars to its full, breathtaking strength, then she ends on a “dumb” note. It’s time for everyone to say goodbye to Nick Lachey’s dingbat wife and say hello once again to the real Jess - the gifted, powerful vocalist who impressed me so much when I saw her first video almost ten years ago.
