Dr. Phil Regrets Talking About Brit

Dr. Phil McGraw is admitting that his tell-all after visiting Britney Spears in the hospital may have been a mistake.

"Was it helpful to the situation? Regrettably, no," the TV doc said during a taping of his show Thursday. "It was not, and I have to acknowledge that and I do. I definitely think if I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't make any statement at all. Period."

He's also denying that he visited Britney for treatement, telling USA Today that he saw Brit Jan. 5 as "a friend and ally of the family." He said he wanted a "gentle and relaxed dialogue that might be of value" for the troubled star.

McGraw came under fire when he spoke publicly about Brit's breakdown, releasing a statement saying she was "in dire need" of help. He also planned a show dedicated to the saga, but later canceled it.

The Spears family has since blasted him as "self-serving" and said he "compromised" Britney's reportedly rocky relationship with mom Lynne and sister Jamie Lynn.

NEXT: What Dayna's Wearing

Dr.Phil……Dr.Phil…..I watch your show every single day…unless I’m busy. I must say I was appalled at the statements you made about that ‘crazy-girl’! The last thing she needs is more pubicity!! That’s her addiction! She’s been emotionally and spiritually “retartded” since she was 15! It’s obvious she doesn’t have the ‘know-how’ nor the basic knowledge on how to deal with her life. Why should she? She’s had so many people ‘handling’ her and steering her life, she is unable to function on her own. Her mother - for goodness sake - makes $$$ selling “her stories” to whomever will by them! SHE should be ashamed of herself! What respecting mother does that to her own child? And I do mean CHILD! And Lynn has the balls to say…..I dont know what went wrong? Who are you kidding!
Your girls DON’T need a girlfriend….they NEED a mother. Hopefully it’s not to late to fix that. Get some help Britney…..it’s gonna be okay.

He didn’t say anything we already didn’t know!

Well, I give him credit for admitting his error in judgment. He may be a professional, but he is also human and capable of mistakes. I also agree that his error wasn’t in contacting Britney but rather that he lined himself up with the media in the way that he did. Definitely not something he would have done had it been a child of his own. Still, I give him credit. Onward and upward!

Well, Lynn certainly knows self-serving behavior when she sees it. Some people just don’t know how to share!
