Dennis Quaid Sues Chicago Drug Maker Over Overdose

Dennis Quaid and his wife filed a lawsuit in Chicago today against the makers of the drug Heparin, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

The parents, whose twin babies were given an accidental overdose of the anti-coagulant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., are suing Baxter Healthcare Corp. for more than $50,000 in damages.

The lawsuit claims that the company failed to properly label vials of its product and that the 10-units-per-milliliter vial and the 10,000-units-per-milliliter were virtually identical. The family also asserts that the company knew of previous mix-ups but failed to recall shipments or warn hospitals.

The suit alleges that the twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, "suffered and will continue to suffer injuries" after being given 1,000 times the recommended dose of Heparin on Nov. 18.

However, though their lawyer noted that “everything looks good” for the babies, the family still wants to help prevent future accidents.

I think the blame should lie with the hospital and the staff. You should check, recheck, doublecheck, and triplecheck any medications you give a patient. While the drug labels are similiar, the nusres and the staff should have picked up on that prior to injecting the drug.
