Last week, my darling sister, Rita (of Survivor: Fiji fame) was in Los Angeles training the lovely contestants vying for the Miss California USA and Miss California Teen USA 2008 titles. She invited David and I to attend the finals, which were held at the historic Orpheum Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

I wanted to attend the finals to support my sister, who looked absolutely stunning wearing one my NIKOLAKI gowns as she handed the bouquets to the Final 5. It was a nice surprise to see the beautiful Meagan Tandy, last year’s Miss California USA, wearing the gown we designed for her when she competed (and received the 3rd Runner Up Title). Also in attendance were two Rita’s castmates and friends from Survivor:Fiji, Michelle Yi and Alex Angarita. It was fun to watch all those girls whom Rita trained and to see her “stamp” of excellence in their walk, posture and presentation.

The pageant itself was actually an exciting one. Everything seem fine and normal. There were over 100 girls competing for both titles. I had my favorites including Miss LA who was a spunky Latina with a walk and a personality that could be seen from the nose-bleed seats at the theater. Miss Barstow and Miss Greater San Diego were gorgeous, the former being a dead ringer for Carmen Electra and Lauren Conrad of MTV’s The Hills and the latter, a beautiful California blond who had “Miss USA” written all over her. These last two were the obvious favorites of the capacity audience at the Orpheum, as well.

It came as a shock then when neither of their names got called as the winner. This is went things got “pageant ugly”. All one could hear were shouts of “Boo” and hisses from the entire theater when Miss Barstow was not named the winner. The sassy Miss LA, Christina Silva had been crowned the new Miss California. We happened to be seated directly behind the judges, which included last year’s controversial Miss Teen USA, Katie Blair (from MTV’s Pageant Place) who looked at the other judges with wonderment. There was some shuffling that had occurred right before the naming of the winners, by the judges’ reps who were tabulating their scores. So there was obvious confusion, but besides this, everything seemed to be going according to a normal pageant script. I met the newly crowned Miss California USA as well as her family backstage and she was such a doll. She confided that she was a fan of Project Runway and loved the gown I designed for last year’s winner and couldn’t wait for me to design hers.

Cut to today. My sister calls me and tells me to go to ExtraTV.com to see the new pageant scandal: It has just been discovered that the judges scores were somehow “misread” by the accounting firm overseeing it and the winner was not the Miss LA, but in fact Miss Barstow, Raquel Beezley (the Carmen Electra/Lauren Conrad doppelganger) . At least this pageant scandal did not involve pepper spray or drug addiction. The lovely Christina Silva, Miss LA, was asked to give up the crown she just had for only 5 days and the crowd favorite, Miss Barstow now has been crowned the new Miss California USA. I am sure this is not the way she envisioned to be crowned the most beautiful woman in California. But, as they say, any publicity is good publicity. More eyes will be on her when she competes in next year’s Miss USA and she will already be on the pageant radar.

for the ones who talk about how people are LOW LIFES for talking about “Christina” look at yourself trashing Raquel. none of you know her, so shut your mouth and get a life!!! you’re all the low lifes who can’t just take the fact that christina lost, and raquel won. the judges have cleared it up between the two people that matter. NOT ALL OF YOU who mean nothing. and also, RAQUEL has won MANY pageants. so don’t “ASSUME” that she hasn’t. WOW christina got “miss congeniality.” so that makes her the best? i don’t think so! get over it. don’t be bitter because the better woman won. who cares if you THINK Christina should take the title. She would probably be great, but Raquel will do better. No money was involved here. PURE BEAUTY. and honesty. everyone involved is sorry that it happened this way. do you honestly think that raquel wanted it to be this way?

and WHO cares that Raquel loves to shop!! At least her FAVORITE THING TO DO isn’t coming onto EXTRA and talking mess about people. Don’t judge her until you get our life straight. it’s amazing how all of you think you are so special that you can come on here and bash people. Get a life. and get over it, nothing is changing.

Just because Raquel has won 10 titles prior to this does not make her the best. It is obvious that Christina had more poise and personality and this was her first pageant. Raquel was given the title so she did not win or should I say bought the title.

Well, I wish Raquel the best because she fits perfect with all those fony people. Christina on the other hand will always stay on top, remember she is a leader not a follower like Raquel!!!

Christina, you are the best and the man upstairs and judge of all judges (GOD) is always with you. Maybe Miss Barstow needs this incident to reflect and learn from Chrstina what are true values. I guess its never to late to learn from this bad situation. Hopefully from the love of her life of shopping will change to something more human.

What happened to “Your are FIRED”!!! Practice what you preach, Mr. Trump. Are you getting weak. First you forgive Miss Connor, now this? What is next becoming best friends with Rosie O’Donnell?? Can’t wait to see you both together on the red carpet.

Everyone that writes terrible things about Christina is a low life. She is beatuiful inside and out!!!She truly has a heart of gold. Hello, she won Miss Congeniality, voted by all the contestants. Raquel has been in pageants all her life and most likely never has won such a pretiges award. You see, you can’t buy the contestants as well!!!

To lololololo, if you have guts you would post your name. I guess you don’t know what real women that work out looks like. Christin’s body is awesome. She is in so much shape that she probably can kick your butt and you would come out crying like a little girl!!!! If you are a male, you probably have been hanging around bars with too many men. If you are a female you are just jealous. Post your picture and lets see what you look like!!!

Miss Barstow, the love of your life is shopping? What values you have. I guess all those competitions have made you so materialistic. What kind of quality person well represent our state!!! If you had any class like Christina you would have not accepted the crown until you were sure there was an investigation. I am actually sad for you. You think this is good press for you?? I don’t think so. This just makes you look so shallow.

here is my question…i was watching the news and Keith said that the point values previously awarded were not up to miss universe standards? And here is the kicker…if the tabulator added those points wrong what else was added wrong. Dont get all crazy…i am not a contestant and i do not hate raquel or christina…i just think this whole thing is just crazy…find better volunteers keith…hahah you look like a loser…i hope they take the pageant away from you.

WOW. all you have to do is look at the pageant photos on the miss california USA website. Then you will see who should have won. Miss Greater San Diego should have been crowned. She Blows barstow away. Miss Greater San Diego looks Miss USA ready. Look at her body! wow.. is all i have to say. i didnt say wow looking at barstows pics. i said oh shes cute. Greater San Diego got robbed!

I’ve only known Raquel for a short period of time, but since I’ve known her she has proved time an time again that she truly has a heart of gold. She’s very determined an I personally believe California is being represented by the only person fit for the job… an that’s Raquel Beezley! Raquel, good luck in April at Miss USA! I’ll be there cheering you on! And to everyone in California, although this was a bad situation, let’s get behind raquel an support her. You think this is easy for her? Uh no… She needs our support an prayers!

This not about the young women or which one deserves to represent California – May God bless them both! This is about the village idiots and “accountants” that cannot perform simple math or ensure the integrity of the fine pageant.

Seriously, the accountant(s) should lose their license… no excuses… they should not be CPA(s) in California… and that firm should be sued for civil liability and investigated for possible criminal conduct.

Mr. Trump - now would be a good time to have your legal team “clean this mess up” – many of us feel you are the only one who can!

Bottom line, Mr. Trump knows how to deal with incompetent employees… that’s right… “YOU’RE FIRED!” Any pageant outcome or event that attempts to tarnish the reputation of Mr. Trump or his pageant will be severely dealt with – Mr. Trump is a great man that does not tolerate fools. I have absolute faith that this embarrassment will be rectified before it impacts Mr. Trump’s pageant.

This is kind of crazy. I’m sure both girls are great, but how is it possible to have an accounting error with just 5 judges? It makes no sense to me. Both girls are beautiful and I’m sure qualified to be Miss California. i just hope they show PROOF of the accounting error.

This is so lame. I don’t even know why I am taking the time to write in this blog….I am a close friend of one of the main characters in this silly story, she worked very hard, and in my mind accomplished a lot in this pageant. This is not a world threatening situation here, please.
And all you people who are criticizing the looks of ANY of the contestants…..post a photo of YOURSELF!…it would be interesting to see what you look like :)

Who ever wrote the comment about the Latina looking like a man. I guess you have never heard the phrase “YOU HAVE TO TREAT PEOPLE HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED”. This is not about insulting anyone, It’s about the fact that the results of this whole contest should of been taken care of right away this was so wrong.I was there Sunday and I did hear the booing coming from Barstows’family when she was mentioned 2nd runner up the booing was uncalled for that was showing no respect. I guess that’s why Barstow was so mean back stage. I’m sorry Barstow you have bad role models.God Bless you, your family and friends.HOW DISAPOINTING THIS WHOLE THING IS! As a Latina, I do not believe it was racial like other have said. The pageant world today I feel does represent a true world wide image. Now for K2 and Keith Lewis, I hope Miss U and Trump fire you. Your integrity and honesty has been questioned by so many parents, other state directors and the Kylee Sanders in last year’s Marin Pageant and personal incidents were carefully swept away, you deserve yours soon! Beezly dosen’t seserve it either….this fradulent K2 /Keith Lewis outcome should have dire consequence….no Miss California USA at 2008 pageant
