Helio Upsets Mel B. for 'Dancing' Crown

Helio Castroneves upset Spice Girl Melanie Brown to capture the fifth “Dancing With the Stars” trophy last night.

“It will look so good between my two Indy 500 trophies!” the race car driver gushed as he took the prize. “This is going to go right there, in a special place. I can’t believe it!”

Helio and partner Julianne Hough earned a perfect score of 30 for their final dance, a quickstep, and sped to the winner's circle even though Mel. B and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were one point ahead.

“I am so proud that we got this far,” Mel told “Extra” after the show.

Marie Osmond, a favorite to win the competition until Monday night’s ill-conceived doll-themed freestyle, was the first to be eliminated during the results show. Still, Marie kept her cheerful attitude.

Pointing to her arms, she shrugged, “No more bruises!” as partner Jonathan Roberts looked on.

Her family, however, wasn’t so positive.

“Mom, you got robbed!” shouted one of her children after Marie left the stage.

Last night’s show saw the welcome return of the jaw-dropping, high-energy dances that audiences have grown to love throughout season five. Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas made their return to the dance floor, though Mark dislocated his shoulder just hours before showtime.

“I kind of wish I was at the hospital with him right now!” Sabrina told “Extra” backstage. Mark, 21, was forced to use only one arm throughout his Cha-Cha and later headed to the hospital.

If there is anyone that deserved to win this competition it was HELIO!!!!! It takes a lot of guts to go on this show, especially if you have not had any background in dancing (unlike some of our other stars did). So my hat comes off for you HELIO!! You deserve it and a job well done. And as much as people are talking about your break off after the 6 years, I think you made the right choice…your heart knows when its not right…i know…i’ve been married for 4 yrs., have 2 kids, and yet i still dont feel as i made the right choice, so for you to realize that before you said I do…more power to you. GOOD LUCK IN ALL YOU DO…your a great role model to others.

On Extra, it was hinted that Florence Henderson may do it next season. She’d be a great choice, and she’s gotten a crash course in the competition as a frequent audience member this past season. If not Florence, I would like to see another Brady, Maureen McCormick. From Extra, I’d like to see Mark McGrath, Dayna Devon, Tanika Ray, or Terri Seymour.

The rest of my wishlist:

Simon Cowell
Martina McBride
Kris Kristofferson
Donald Trump
Stephen Cojocaru
Tina Yothers
Sheryl Crow
Woody Harrelson
Peter Noone
Paula Deen
Bea Arthur
Neil Diamond
Steve Martin

Mel B was certainly my favourite to win. I also thought she and her partner deserved the title more, based on overall performance. Anyway, judging is subjective and sometimes doesn’t follow the direction expected. Though Mel B and her partner are the runner-up couple, I think they did an excellent job.
