Hayden Panettiere in Tears After Dolphin Disaster

“Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere tried to be a real hero for a group of hunted dolphins in Japan, but the experience left the 18-year-old in tears.

Hayden and a group of animal rights activists flew to Japan to protest the annual killing of dolphins there, a common practice and Japanese custom.

The group paddled out to sea on surfboards, cameras in hand, to stop the dolphins from being herded into a cove and killed. But several irritated fisherman intercepted the group and used a boathook to push the surfers back, causing Hayden to retreat to shore.

“This baby stuck its head out and kind of looked as us, and the thought that the baby is no longer with us is very difficult,” Hayden said after reaching dry land, her voice cracking with emotion.

About 14,000 dolphins are killed for food in Japan annually.

If you really want to have an effect on what the Japanese are doing (ie: slaughtering whales and dolphins) boycott ALL Japanese products and the companies that produce them until they STOP. As long as Americans keep buying Japanese goods and services we are sending a message that we don’t care if they slaughter every living thing in the ocean. I personally haven’t bought anything Japanese made in over 15 years for just this reason. But American’s are self serving hypocrites; “We’ll support saving wildlife as long we don’t have to give up Japanese cars, cameras, or electronics.”. Because this problem is a Japanese cultural issue the country and its companies should be held accountable for the actions of those who commit these heinous crimes…

I think Hayden is completely correct in her actions. i say that america is a country that always has stood up for other countries and wasnt afraid to try and change the things that effect america. and hayden was showing her disagreement of what they did in japan. The people who say ” Leave Japan alone and let them do their thing” i say you all need to have a little more heart. PLEASE STOP SLAUGHTERING THE DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS NOT RIGHT AND ITS NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!

and to add to my last comment, we may go hunting for deer and elk and what not but we have rules for that type of thing. You can just go buck wild and kill a whole herd of them.

I’m glad that Hayden decided to stand up for something. Yeah, maybe there are things going on right here in america, but everyone decides to stand for something and this is what she chose. This is in humane what they’re doing to the dolphins and it is nothing like us eating cows or chickens or going hunting. Here, we raise the cows and chickens just for eating. The dolphins and whales that they kill are not thiers, they are wild animals. And yes they may have been doing this for hundreds of years, but it will catch up and soon there will be no dolphins, because of the large amount that they kill them in. If you want to see for yourself, just watch it on youtube. and no, they are not just doing this to feed thier families and to bring in money to their homes, this is a delicacy and it is not needed. They have cows and chickens just the same as we do and I’m sure that they can live off of that without eating the whales and dolphins. I say that it needs to stop, it is not humane and it is just not right.

You cant punish them for feeding their families, what they choose to do it with is their own choice. quit judging other countries for their choices. the japanese have been doing this for hundreds of years. there are still dolphins, what a shocker! dont go out there if youre not prepared for them to kill a dolphin infront of you- its what theyre there for. And Hayden, you being there means nothing to them!

Save the Whales
The whales in Japan are being slaughtered. The people in Japan are using them for money and to eat. Hayden Panettiere was crying because she saw them kill the poor whales. Think about this. Are you feeling guilty now? Do you want to help us save the whales?

Can’t someone just kill the fishermen? Apparently there are only 26 of them and not anyone has the ‘privilege’ of doing this ‘work-slaughter’. If we kill the fishermen then they can’t hurt the dolphins and the problem would be solved. It would take a while before their sons would be old enough to do it and by then maybe the dolphins will be on the protected species list.
Ahh, to dream.

As much as I think it is sad to be killing animals, I don’t think there’s any difference between killing a cow for hamburgers (or going deer hunting)in America, and killing a dolphin in Japan. Just because we choose cows over dolphins doesn’t make us any better. 14,000 dolphins killed annually in Japan? How many cows and chickens are killed here? Look at what WE are doing before you judge other countries.

I say worry about what’s happening in America before you cross an ocean and try to interfere in something that is not your business

Hayden’s got a big heart. She did what she had to do and is to defend those dolkphins from slaughter. It broke my heart when I saw video of Hayden in tears after she came to shore. I can’t blame her. She needs some support. she got mine! I’m with her all the way.

As much as i disagree with the killing of dolphins, if shes going to be an animal rights activist, shes got to be ready for people to not stand aside at her very presence. her being a celebrity doesnt change anything for them. sorry!

I saw the footage and was appalled and disgusted by the carnage. I applaud anyone who steps in to stop and bring awareness to any animal cruelty. Kudus for using your celebrity for good!

Those fishermen get my award for Biggest Disrespect For Dolphins, 2007 award.
I applaud Ms. Panettiere for her efforts to save dolphins, which are graceful animals—-and don’t deserve to be killed for food!
