Update: Hospital Apologizes for 'Preventable Error'

Dennis Quaid's rep has released the following statement to "Extra":

"Dennis and Kimberly appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and hope they can maintain their privacy at this difficult time."

Their newborn twins are reportedly in the neo-natal intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after accidentally receiving massive amounts of an anti-blood clot drug.

Today, the hospital released a statement apologizing for the "preventable error" that occurred with three unidentified patients receiving heparin. The hospital did not directly comment on the Quaid twins.

"I want to extend my deepest apologies to the families who were affected by this situation, and we will continue to work with them on any concerns or questions they may have," said Dr. Michael L. Langberg, chief medical officer at Cedars. "This was a preventable error, involving a failure to follow our standard policies and procedures, and there is no excuse for that to occur at Cedars-Sinai. Although it appears at this point that there was no harm to any patient, we take this situation very seriously."

He continued, "As a result of a preventable error, the patients' IV catheters were flushed with heparin from vials containing a concentration of 10,000 units per milliliter instead of from vials containing a concentration of 10 units per milliliter. The error was identified by Cedars-Sinai staff, who immediately performed blood tests on the patients to measure blood clotting function."

Ultimately, two patients had to be given a drug to reverse the effects of the drug and restore blood clotting to normal.

"Additional medical tests and clinical evaluation conducted on the two patients indicated no adverse effects from the higher concentration of heparin or from the temporary abnormal clotting function," Langberg said. "Doctors continue to monitor the patients."

It is terribly sad that this happened to these babies. Heparin 10,000 Units should not even be stored on a neonatal unit. I am sure that the nurse responsible is devastated, and I am also sure that she, the pharmacy, and the hospital will take every action to make sure that this mistake never happens again.

This very same mistake happened at a hospital in Indianapolis earlier this year and unfortunately, several newborns died from the mistake. Someone has got to change these heparin containers or store them separately or something. It keeps happening! DUH!

People and hospitals don’t realize that babies are fragile, hence Cedar Sinai hospital using Dennis Quaid’s own babies as subjects/guinea pigs of their medical experiments, albeit shamelessly at times, and honestly I have a HUGE problem with that.
That’s insane and INEXCUSABLE!
Pardon me for venting, but honestly, if hospitals were more ethical toward their patients(young and old), there wouldn’t be so many problems like this one currently happening.
I hope for the best for Dennis Quaid’s babies, and for him and his wife, too.

My prayers are with the Quaid family and their precious babies. I am a twin, too…. and when I heard that they had twins I was so excited for them. I cannot believe that a hospital almost caused the death of these lovely little ones by such negligence. I wish them all the best and a most speedy recovery…..

My prayers go out to Dennis & Kimberly that Thomas & Zoe will be OK and not suffer any after effects. The person responsible should be suspended and charges should be filed against them and the hospital. It is horrifying that a well respected hospital like Cedars could let something like this occur.

What at terrible stupid thing to have happened! I hope the babies are ok.
I saw a photo of Dennis with twin babies in carriers. I presume they were discharged from the hospital. So why were the babies back in the hospital?

I hope their babies are going to be okay. What a terrible thing and due to no negligence on their part. Our prayers go out to them. God Bless.
