Oprah Comes Clean About Medical Condition

Oprah Winfrey announced she’s been battling a thyroid condition that has left her tired and overweight.

She told viewers yesterday on her show that she blew out her thyroid when the season wrapped up in May. The result? A mix of sleeplessness, sluggishness and uncontrollable weight gain.

“My body was turning on me,” she writes in the newest issue of O magazine.

She said she was first diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which sped up her metabolism and left her “unable to sleep for days.”

Soon, the condition flip-flopped and turned into hypothyroidism, which slowed down her metabolism. She found herself sluggish and 20 pounds heavier, which she attributes to stress and overwork.

Now she’s speaking out about the condition, which affects millions of women. Oprah, 53, said she made the announcement to bring attention to women’s health issues.

i’ve been having symptoms much like Oprah’s for the past nine yrs. I am 57 yrs old and the doctors told me it was menopause.
I felt for a time that I was losing my mind, because nobody believe the symptoms that I was having…heart palpatations, weakness, and fatigue and never having an appetite, but never losing weight either. Finally after all the blood work showed thyroid within normal ranges, a female doctor’s assistant had me scheduled for a thyroid ultrasound…voila! They found nodules around my thyroid and I am scheduled for a surgery consult tomorrow.
Not sure if I want surgery, I will definitely seek a second opinion before I consent to that.

It’s a relief to know that I know my body better than someone who isn’t living in it! [doctor]
Thanks Oprah, for bringing this to the light, there are a lot of us without money who can’t afford to convince the professionals that we need medical help.

More or less nothing seems important. I’ve just been letting everything happen without me recently. I can’t be bothered with anything recently, but such is life. My life’s been generally bland today. Not much on my mind these days, but eh.

I can’t be bothered with anything recently. I’ve just been sitting around doing nothing. Today was a loss. I just don’t have much to say. Nothing seems worth thinking about.

I too am hypothyroid. I was diagnosed 20 years ago on my 30th birthday. (Happy Bday to me…) It hasn’t been too bad though. I have dry skin and thin hair but my weight hasn’t been a problem. I have occational tiredness, but then who doesn’t? I take synthetic thyroid replacement every day and I’m happy to say that having this condition hasn’t been a big deal for me. Oprah, I hope it ends up that way for you.

I have hypothyroid also. I am sure that Oprah will bring new light to this health issue. I have an up and down battle with my weight (which I keep pretty well under control) the biggest problem I have is dry skin and HAIR LOSS! I do not feel pretty anymore! As a mother of 4 I want my children to be proud of me and I look tired and ugly! I sure hope that Dr. Oz will discuss thyroid conditions now! I LOVE OPRAH!

I also have hypothyroidism and it is from being BI-POLAR.
I do not use this thyroid condition as a tool for sympathy since I have a weight problem. Now Oprah will have the ‘world’ tested for thyroid problems, since she goes up and down with her weight.

I am poor and have no one like Oprah and her money to tell people what it is like to be BiPolar and all the other medical condtions I have.
