Why Your Diet May Be Killing You

A controversial new book is blowing the lid off of everything you thought about dieting.

The explosive book “Good Calories, Bad Calories” claims that diet and exercise may not only cause disease, but that a combination of the two can actually kill you.

“Extra” sat down with the book’s controversial author, Gary Taubes, to answer these claims.

“Seventy-percent of cancers are caused by diet,” he contends.

That statement is just one of many raising eyebrows.

Taubes also writes that dietary fat – saturated or not – does not cause obesity. Rather, carbohydrates are the culprit!

He claims that carbs, combined with sugars, are “the likely causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and the other chronic diseases of civilization.”

Taubes spent five years researching the book and interviewed more than 600 people for his results. He claims he has the evidence to back those explosive results up.

In another finding, Taubes contends that obesity is not the result of overeating or lack of exercise. He calls being overweight “a disorder of fat accumulation.”

In fact, he says that consuming excess calories doesn’t cause us to grow fatter, and that working out isn’t as beneficial as once thought. He claims that exercise just increases our desire to eat.

This report was completely ridiculous and misleading for the public. Making statements about fruit and exercise exclusion is ludacris and unwarranted. This man is an obvious fear monger with no center in reality. While diet is an extremely important part of lowering risk for cancers and other chronic disease, we need a balanced diet for funtion, including carbohydrates.

When I saw this report on TV today, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing!!!
I have stage 4 lung cancer and am beating it with alternative treatment, which includes diet, supplements and large doses of vitamin C (IV)s. My latest testing shows that the cancer cells in my blood has changed from 13 cancer cells in a tsp. of blood to 7.1 (in 3-1/2 months!) Some carbs are on my diet including potatoes and sprouted bread! I think this info is absolutely absurd!

This has to be the biggest joke I have ever heard. I am an anatomy and cell biology major and am well educated about carbohydrates and the other essential nutrients our bodies require. This man is obviously just attempting to make money off people who are not well educated about these sorts of things and are willing to do anything they hear to lose weight or keep themselves from getting cancer.

I have a degree in Kinesiology and have learned that carbs are very essential for mental functioning. To hear that carbs are giving cancer seems very outrageous to me!! Of course sugars, donuts, and candy aren’t good for you, but fruit!! God put fruit on the earth as natures candy! Nature does not give you cancer. Man-made products give you cancer!

Working out is essential to keep muscle mass and bone strength. Diet is the key to losing weight, but working out helps the immune system and helps you feel more energized throughout the day! I read a recent study on how aerobic exercise improves your cognitive function as you get older.

While I do agree that diet plays a key role in health, certain diseases and and some cancers, some are genetic, some are environmental and some I believe are nothing more than a virus gone wild.
I think it’s time that we take some responsibility for our health.Even though diet alone won’t stop genetic cancers it could possibly keep us in better health to be able to fight different diseases.

As an anatomy an physiology student I have learned that carbs are an essential part of life, without them the cells in our bodies would not have the energy they need to survive. While I do understand that overprocessing carbs and other foods can cause problems, carbs are not the enemy. I guess the only way you can sell a book is to make a bogus claim. What a freakin joke

Why has it taken so long for Americans to wake up to the fact that carbs are not good for us? Cancer causing, most likely. Obesity, for sure. Our bodies needs some carbs, but like everything else ‘all things in moderation’ is key.

As for working out, if we were not obsessed with our appearance, (thanks to the magazines adds and all those out there making money on our misery)there would be no need to get on a treadmill or whatever. We would have less aches and pains, too. (but then we wouldn’t be spending money to feel better)

Our society is want all, get all and and we end up rounning around in circles.

As a person living with cancer, I find it appalling there is yet another person trying to make a profit off other people’s pain. Cancer has been around as far back as 1500BC and doctors still aren’t 100% sure what causes it. Each cancer is different and each cancer can be started in a human’s body in an inordinate number of ways. My particular cancer is believed to be genetic. On that note, would someone like to figure out how my diet can genetically alter my DNA and stop me from having my cancer? I am a trained chef and know what I should be eating, what I should not be eating, and how I should be cooking or not cooking my food. To be told by someone that I brought my cancer on myself by what I eat is another example of blaming the victim. What I need right now is support and access to medical treatment. If he wants to prove that what he believes is to be correct, then have Mr. Taubes donate all the proceeds from his book to help out with cancer research to prove he is stating 100% fact.

It is just another person trying to make people believe there is a magic pill or magic recipe to living life. It’s a modern day snake oil salesman routine and it disgusts me to my core. I have cancer. For the rest of my life I will be fighting my cancer to make sure it does not come back. The last thing I need is to fight someone trying to make a profit off my illness.
