Why Your Diet May Be Killing You

A controversial new book is blowing the lid off of everything you thought about dieting.

The explosive book “Good Calories, Bad Calories” claims that diet and exercise may not only cause disease, but that a combination of the two can actually kill you.

“Extra” sat down with the book’s controversial author, Gary Taubes, to answer these claims.

“Seventy-percent of cancers are caused by diet,” he contends.

That statement is just one of many raising eyebrows.

Taubes also writes that dietary fat – saturated or not – does not cause obesity. Rather, carbohydrates are the culprit!

He claims that carbs, combined with sugars, are “the likely causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and the other chronic diseases of civilization.”

Taubes spent five years researching the book and interviewed more than 600 people for his results. He claims he has the evidence to back those explosive results up.

In another finding, Taubes contends that obesity is not the result of overeating or lack of exercise. He calls being overweight “a disorder of fat accumulation.”

In fact, he says that consuming excess calories doesn’t cause us to grow fatter, and that working out isn’t as beneficial as once thought. He claims that exercise just increases our desire to eat.

A 20 year nutritional researcher at Cornell has the credentials and the definitive answer on diet and cancer. Everybody needs to read Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s book, “The China Study,” if you want the best source of reliable information. Guaranteed you will be blown away. Gary Taubes conclusions don’t hold a candle to Dr. Campbell’s 20 years of study.

Read the book the CHINA STUDY. It’s written by a real doctor. The China Study promotes Plant foods over any Animal foods.

This is absurd and ridiculous. He’s just trying to make money from those people who are uneducated and are really desperate to get fit. I’d like to see where his sources were from.

Doctors are sooo not educated on nutrition and yeast problems in medical school. The reason sugar and carbs are causing cancer is because it is what feeds yeast/fungus. In our society we take tons of antibiotics which make yeast flourish, we get antibiotics daily in our meats and eat tons of sugar, all of this makes yeast and fungus grow and permeate our whole bodies, organs, skin, brain, and gut.

Medical doctors are clueless about yeast and fungus being the big cause of all our ailments in todays society. Just go to www.knowthecause.com

People diagnosed with cancer that start taking anti-fungal herbs daily and go on an anti-candida diet (anti-fungal diet), their cancer goes into remission. This says a lot about the theory that cancer is fungus. Too sad that the medical field won’t start researching this, -you know why?? BECAUSE CANCER AND OUR OTHER AILMENTS ARE MOOOONEY!!!!!!!! It’s unfortunately all about money in the medical field, they’d rather keep us on drugs all our lives to suppress the symptoms instead of getting to the root of the problem. Health and drugs is a biiiig money making machine. Very sad.

Ridiculous! Making dumb statments to shock people enough to buy his book for personal gain.

It is a low carb, high fat diet that is unhealthy. Clogged arteries and high cholesteral is not healthy. Another study came out yesterday which showed that cognitive ability is better with a high carbohydrate/low fat diet verses a low carbohydrate/high fat diet. You can loose weight both ways but the high carbohydrate/low fat diet is healthier.

This guy doesn’t know what he is talking about. Have you ever seen an obese vegetarian? I haven’t - humans are not meant to eat meat anyway. Carnivores, like lions and tigers, have short intestines, thus to digest meat quickly. Humans have long intestines, like gorillas, and are meant, by nature, to eat grains, fruits, nuts, etc. Grains are fiber and we need fiber to clear the intestines of things like meat, waiting to sit in the bowels and potentially cause cancer. I know someone who was recently diagnosed with cancer and guess what - she eats exactly the way he says we should be eating. No thanks!

I think this is total B.S. - how do you explain my friends who are total vegetarians, eating pretty much nothing but grains, pasta - everything he says not to eat. I too eat very little meat, and mostly eat pasta - I’m in very good healthy, have good cholesterol and tryglcerides - no one can tell me eating meats and cheese is better for you - everyone I know that has eaten like that, one has had colon cancer and the others are obese. Balance is the key to eating and everything else in life.

I BELELIVE THAT THIS GUY IS A TOTAL IDIOT! WHEN YOU EXERCISE YOU ARE BURNING CALORIES AND REDUCING THE CHANCES OF HEART DISEASE. WHEN YOU COME BACK FROM THE GYM YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO EAT HEALTHY SO THAT YOU WILL NOT GAIN THE FAT!! BACK. THE WEIGHT YOU GAIN IS MUSCLE WEIGHT AND NOT FAT FROM THE FOOD YOU EAT AFTER WORKING OUT. NEXT THING YOU KNOW HE WILL BE TELLING EVERYONE THAT ALL THE FOOD WE EAT WILL CAUSE CANCER.

Firstly, I think I would like to read the evidence he claims to have before making a final judgment but based on the precis above:

It seems like a re run of the Atkins low carb diet fad. Atkins had a Cardiac Arrest at age 72 and died of kidney failure at age 73. The conclusion?

I personally eat & drink what I want in moderation and I like exercise because it makes me feel good and reduces stress.

From what I understand health is due to many variables, Nutrition, exercise, genetic, environment but I think the Stresses of life can also be a huge factor in bad health. Stress can destroy you from within no matter what you eat.

only one hundred and fifty years of research? this guy is so ignorant. first of all, we need clean food in order for our colons to stay clean and house the ‘good’ bacteria. if we eat pesticide residues, hormones, and antibiotics all the time, we kill all of the good bacteria. lack of ‘good’ bacteria causes problems. in order to help the good bacteria flourish, we need to include it in our diet, whether it’s organic yogurt, kefir or supplements, probiotics help. secondly, eating a diet that is well balanced is necessary to keep us clean and healthy. our diet needs to be both yin (80%)and yang (20%), the acidic foods (yang) need to balance out the alkaline foods (yin). this means we need fruits and vegetables! this means we NEED carbohydrates. thirdly, cancer is the lack of oxygen to a cell. having the right minerals in our body helps keep our bodies oxygenated. potassium encourages oxygenation and sodium discourages it. also exercise helps oxygenate the blood and in turn the cells. obviously there are more factors than these, but it’s a better start than this dude’s theory.

I am so confused. I was eating a bowl of strawberries when I heard this on the TV. What are we going to do? So now I can eat all the fatty meat and no fruit. I can understand the junk type food, like candy and chips & dip. I believe anything in moderation is not going to kill us. My Mother is 83, she eats 5 times a day, small portions, the only thing she takes is a blood pressure pill, which she believes is genetic. She does eat bread and pasta and gets around better than myself at times.
The problem I have in this day & time when can’t enjoy living without worrying about what is going to kill us.
Thank you for your time.

It’s about more than cancer, that was a sound byte. Get informed.I have been eating low carb for about 5 years now, and have never felt better. I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes 7 years ago, was put on medication and by following the ‘typical’ ADA low-fat diet, I gained 40 lbs and felt terrible. My blood sugar was out of control. Thank goodness I discovered the low carb way of eating, controlled my insulin & blood glucose, and lost the 40 lbs. I have been able to cut way back on the meds, too. This book will hopefully wake some people up! Think about it. Ever wonder why obesity and diabetes has reached epidemic proportions? It’s the way we eat!

Most nutritionists today agree that too much fatty meat is what causes health problems and yes, probably cancer. Also an overabundence of dairy products, cheeses, etc is not altogether good for you. Meats and cheeses load your colon and slow down your system. A diet high in fiber, fruits and vegetables is what is keeping me, at 68, healthy, vital, heart healthy and yes, colon cancer free. Doc, you are a “nut”, and not the healthy variety.

I was shocked when I saw this . Where did this guy come from. I know almost everything there is to know about diet and exercise, I have an eating disorder for most of my life and had cervical cancer as well. Not to mention that my mother was on Atkins and south Beach diets for about 5 years now to lose weight and help her diabetes, she lost alot of weight but has had breast cancer and just recently a skin cancer scare that is not over yet. Like I said I have no clue where this guy came from or how he put 2 and 2 together.

You people need to read the book. He is not saying “NO” carbs. He is saying “LOWER” your carb intake. He is also saying that if you work out and eat more you will not loose weight.
